Progress on the 1998 NMS
STRUCTURES The Deanside Branch is now available for W10 traffic.
FREIGHT A new branch and coal-loading terminal has been constructed and
brought into use at Holehouse, off the Waterside branch. Since 1995, a total of
34 sidings throughout Scotland have been reopened and have received freight
traffic, and over half are in regular use.
We have completed the study into reopening the Stirling–Longannet route,
and have concluded that this is viable, subject to sufficient levels of freight traffic.
We will carry out the necessary works when appropriate funding arrangements
are in place.
Investigations are continuing into the reacquisition of the closed former BR
branches to Maxwelltown (Dumfries) and CPA Container Terminal (Greenock).
The former BR-owned site at Elderslie has been purchased by Railtrack
Property with a view to establishing a rail-connected freight facility.
