Progress on the 1998 NMS
CAPABILITY We have supported the development of the Sunderland Metro
Scheme. We are now considering how to structure our approach to the
implementation of this scheme to achieve a service start by the end of 2001.
We have purchased sidings at Eaglescliffe to enable future freight traffic growth.
JOURNEY TIME We have identified the works required to deliver linespeed
improvements between Northallerton and Middlesbrough. We are now
discussing with our customers the economic viability of these improvements.
GENERAL WORKS A three-year programme of repairs and painting of the
Newcastle High Level Bridge is now complete.
PERFORMANCE Our maintenance regime has been enhanced by developing a
closer relationship with our suppliers and developing analytical measurement of
asset performance identifying areas which need enhanced maintenance.
Consequently, delays have fallen considerably throughout this route by
some 20% in the past 12 months. We are now developing our plans for the
coming 12 months.
STATIONS The £20M programme of work on Newcastle Station is well under
way. This extensive programme of work involves rebuilding the heavily corroded
south barrel roof, refurbishing the main offices, improvements to the car parking,
new lifts and an escalator connection to the Tyne & Wear Metro Station.
Work at Middlesbrough Station began in August 1998 and is scheduled for
completion by the time this NMS is published. This has involved rebuilding and
resurfacing the platforms, repairing the Victorian cast-iron canopy and its
ingenious drainage, and renovating the subway.
At other stations throughout the area, we have carried out regeneration
work, typically improving waiting shelters, resurfacing platforms and improving
lighting.
