37 North East England continued These are the route improvements we plan to deliver CAPACITY CHANGES TO MEET FRANCHISING DIRECTOR, PTE AND CUSTOMER REQUIREMENTS AND DELIVER ROUTE VISION LOCATION PROPOSEDSOLUTION YEAR REF Tyne & Wear Metro Provide facilities for the integration of Metro (light rail) services with the existing national rail services between Newcastle, Sunderland and South Hylton. This exciting scheme will involve the electrification of the route, new junctions at Pelaw and Sunderland, new stations, and a completely new railway between Sunderland and South Hylton. 2001 A Newcastle–Carlisle We are progressing a feasibility study to identify the work required to deliver our immediate target journey time of 75 minutes from Carlisle to Newcastle. Key to this is the need to modify the ways in which certain of the le vel crossings on the route operate. 2000 B Leamside In conjunction with the ECML upgrade proposals (Route 2) we are supporting the proposal to open new stations on this route to provide a fast interurban service between Middlesbrough, Durham, Washington and Newcastle. 2003 C DC Freight capability We have evaluated the route to Tyne Dock for high-gauge freight and determined that some infrastructure changes would be required. We are now considering how to structure our approach to the implementation of this scheme to achieve a service start by the end of 2001. We have purchased sidings at Eaglescliffe to enable future freight traffic growth. JOURNEY TIME We have identified the works required to deliver linespeed improvements between Northallerton and Middlesbrough. We are now discussing with our customers the economic viability of these improvements. GENERAL WORKS A three-year programme of repairs and painting of the Newcastle High Level Bridge is now complete. PERFORMANCE Our maintenance regime has been enhanced by developing a closer relationship with our suppliers and developing analytical measurement of asset performance identifying areas which need enhanced maintenance. Consequently, delays have fallen considerably throughout this route by some 20% in the past 12 months. We are now developing our plans for the coming 12 months. STATIONS The £20M programme of work on Newcastle Station is well under way. This extensive programme of work involves rebuilding the heavily corroded south barrel roof, refurbishing the main offices, improvements to the car parking, new lifts and an escalator connection to the Tyne & Wear Metro Station. Work at Middlesbrough Station began in August 1998 and is scheduled for completion by the time this NMS is published. This has involved rebuilding and resurfacing the platforms, repairing the Victorian cast-iron canopy and its ingenious drainage, and renovating the subway. At other stations throughout the area, we have carried out regeneration work, typically improving waiting shelters, resurfacing platforms and improving lighting. A 309
