Progress on the 1998 NMS
STATIONS During 1998, major works have been completed at Folkestone
Central including track and platform rationalisation, and refurbishment of the
station with new lifts and facilities to meet standards for mobility-impaired access.
Discussions are under way with the local authority and Connex for
improvements to the station facilities at Tonbridge. Planning permission has been
sought for a redevelopment of Bromley South Station.
SRP work has been completed at Eynsford, Shoreham, Otford, Bat and Ball,
Sevenoaks, Maidstone East, Bearsted, Hollingbourne, Harrietsham, Lenham and
Charing.
It is proposed to enlarge and improve car park three at Sevenoaks and
make improvements to the station forecourt to improve interchange. Customerinformation
systems at all Connex franchised stations are being replaced and
significantly improved through a Railtrack and Connex partnership scheme.
SIGNALLING EQUIPMENT RENEWAL The renewal of signalling equipment in
the Dover area was completed in 1998. Following the completion of signalling
condition assessments, we intend to undertake signalling equipment renewal in
the Hither Green area by 2001.
LINESPEED IMPROVEMENTS The opening of CTRL Section 1 will enable
journey-time improvements for domestic services on existing lines. Elsewhere on
the route, an initial linespeed improvement feasibility study is complete and
priority routes have been identified. Action will be taken where meaningful
journey-time reductions can be realised. Feasibility work is continuing for other
sections of the route. Further work will take place this year to determine
whether additional journey-time reductions can be achieved with new rolling
stock.
