5 174 Midland Main Line: London to Sheffield continued Progress on the 1998 NMS NEW STATION FOR LUTON AIRPORT Now under construction and due for completion and opening in autumn this year. PROPOSED LINESPEED INCREASES A number of options are under evaluation, some of which will be implemented during 1999. Railtrack and Midland Main Line have co-operated to offer a 1 hour 59 minute journey time from Sheffield to London – the fastest ever timetabled journey between the two cities. PROPOSED EAST MIDLANDS PARKWAY STATION Midland Main Line is undertaking further feasibility work to ascertain passenger demand and the environmental implications of the new station. NEW MAINTENANCE SHED FACILITIES FOR CENTRAL TRAINS AT NOTTINGHAM This facility has been completed and is now in operation. PROPOSED TRENT PSB RESIGNALLING Options, including life extension by a programme of continuous component renewal, continue to be developed in time for implementation in 2000/01. THAMESLINK 2000 See Section 8.5 in the London Section. BEDFORD STATION New north bound platform is currently under construction. It is due for completion and opening in May this year and will provide full disabled access to all platforms via new lifts. SHEFFIELD CAPACITY IMPROVEMENTS A feasibility study is due for completion this year. LEICESTER TO WIGSTON Track capacity is being increased at Wigston by installing a double-level junction. This work will be completed in April 1999. SHEFFIELD STATION REFURBISHMENT Design and development for Station Regeneration Programme works is currently ongoing with planned work starting in autumn this year.
