Dear Mercy Community,
Mercy Starts with Me! Mercy calls each of us – students, faculty, alumnae
and Mercy community members – to reach for our dreams and to achieve
all that we are meant to be. As a school community, we empower our
students to develop their faith, to be prepared for the rigors of college, and
to give back to their communities sharing their
gifts and talents to help create a better world.
The front cover of this issue of the Oaks mirrors
our new Admissions brochure. Over the past year,
the Board of Directors and the Leadership Team
worked with Mary Schwedhelm ’65 and Betsy
Todd (Tyler Wienckowski ’12) Co-Founders of
LOOK - a marketing, branding and advertising
agency, to articulate what makes Mercy unique
and different from other Catholic high schools in our area. What makes
Mercy unique is living out the vision of Catherine McAuley and the Sisters
of Mercy in today’s world. Mercy Starts with Me calls each of us to look at
who we are and how we want to be in the world.
In this edition of the Oaks, we would like to highlight our alumnae and
student achievements as well as a few new programs: Kairos Retreat,
Link Crew, and Service Learning. Each of these programs touches the
hearts of our students as they learn more about themselves, God and their
community and “grow into the me you’re meant to be.”
As you reflect on the many ways you are Mercy to the world, I want to
take a moment to tell you of a wonderful opportunity which supports our
Mercy students. On May 4, 2011, we will host our 7th Annual Making A
Difference Scholarship Luncheon which raises money for tuition assistance.
Through Making A Difference we have raised over $365,000 for tuition
assistance for Mercy girls. The Mercy High School Board of Directors
generously underwrites the luncheon and there is no cost for guests to
attend. However, those who attend are invited to be as generous as they are
able in making a gift to support tuition assistance. We would love to have
you join us. More information may be found on pages 6-7; you may RSVP
or make a donation using the enclosed envelope or by clicking on the link
Kairos Retreat
(God’s Time)
Kairos, Greek for “a time with God,” is our new Junior Retreat program offered
twice per year. The Kairos retreat is a three day, two-night student-led retreat with a
team of leaders comprised of students, members of the Campus Ministry Team, and
other faculty/staff members. Retreatants are given the gift of time, something all
too rare in our modern day lives. During this process, the retreatant also becomes
very close with the others involved in the retreat. Through the course of the retreat,
a building of a strong community takes place, through encouraging openness,
reflection, and trust. During Kairos you can expect:
• Opportunity to examine your life, faith, values, relationships, hopes and dreams
• Friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.
Mercy began Kairos in October 2010 for our junior class. In January 2011,
we held a Kairos retreat for the seniors and will have a second Junior Kairos
Retreat in March.
—Angie Simonetti, Sandy Flaherty and Jessica Mueller , Mercy’s Campus Ministry Team
“My daughter loved Kairos, I believe every teenager should have this experience.
It strengthens their connection with God and with those they love. My daughter
has the utmost respect for the teachers and leaders of Kairos.” – A Mercy Parent
As an immediate response to recent studies that have shown
that student experience in the freshman year has a tremendous
impact on the overall success one has in high school, Mercy
High School proudly implemented Link Crew this past fall.
Link Crew is a nationally recognized student-centered
leadership and mentoring program that helps create a positive
atmosphere while laying
the groundwork for
building confidence among
our freshman students.
The program helps the
girls feel that they are part
of the Mercy community
beginning with their
first day of high school.
Link Crew not only provides a compelling and interactive
orientation program for our freshmen, but it also gives Mercy
the opportunity to expand our leadership opportunities for
our junior and senior students. The Link Crew program
focuses on leadership, freshman orientation and the infamous
transition into high school that can so often be overwhelming
for students.
With our Link Crew Leaders welcoming our freshmen on
Orientation Day and following up with them throughout the
year in various Link activities such as team-building and grade
checkups, we have been able to provide our freshmen girls with
a more comfortable and encouraging transition into Mercy
High School, which has helped to turn their overall Mercy
experience into a much more positive one. As one freshman
noted, “Link Crew made me feel welcomed into Mercy
immediately, and it made me feel part of something. The
older girls that became my Link Leaders continue to include
me in activities, and they have made me feel special, like I
am their little sister.”
2010-2011 Link Crew Leaders
Mercy
Introduces
Link Crew
“Bringing Mercy Together
One Link at a Time...”
The driving force behind the Link Crew program is the belief
that the older Mercy students are capable of incredible things.
As positive role models, Link Leaders are motivators, leaders
and teachers who help to guide the freshmen throughout their
transition into Mercy while also encouraging them to get
involved so that they may have a successful high school career.
One junior Link Leader stated that, “Link Crew has given me
the opportunity to be a leader in a new way on campus while
helping our new freshmen.” One senior Link Leader followed
this statement up by saying, “so many people talk about what
we do for Link Crew, but what they left out was what it would
do for us. Since becoming a Link Leader I have felt a greater
connection to the Mercy community and I feel like I matter to
the school. Link Crew is one of the best changes Mercy has had,
and I feel very honored to have been picked to be a part of it.”
Mercy’s Link Crew Leaders are a cross-section of our student
body with representatives from all social groups of the school,
thus giving freshmen an older student with whom they can
identify. Through identification with and connection to a Link
Crew Leader, freshmen start to see themselves as leaders on
campus, too. The Link Crew high school transition program
provides the structure for Mercy freshmen to receive support
and guidance from juniors and seniors who have been through
the challenges that high school poses, and understand that the
transition to a larger school can sometimes be overwhelming.
The success of adding a program like Link Crew has been
immediate at Mercy, and just like the program, the Link
Leaders have brought with them a contagious and positive new
spirit to the school that is already encouraging those around
them to get involved and become Link Leaders for next year!
Special thanks to the leadership and vision of the faculty/staff
Link Crew Team of Colleen O’Donnell, Michele
Macmillan and Ellen Williamson.
Making A Difference
Mercy’s Commitment
Mercy High School has always offered financial assistance to our students. This
commitment allows us to fulfill our mission of educating young women of all economic
backgrounds. However, rising costs and a challenging economy make it difficult for
many families to afford a Mercy education. The requests for assistance have dramatically
risen over the past few years. In 2004, we established our “Making A Difference
Luncheon” in order to raise the additional funds necessary to help us achieve our goal
of ensuring that all qualified applicants who dream of a Mercy education are afforded
that opportunity. This luncheon is a crucial source of funding for out tuition assistance
program and we need to increase available funding for our families.
You Can Make A Difference
Through the Making A Difference Luncheon we have been able to say “yes” to more
students. We are seeking support from our Mercy community to help us meet the
increased needs of our families. “Making A Difference” has raised over $365,700 for
tuition assistance. The luncheon is generously underwritten by the Mercy High School
Board of Directors; there is no cost to attend the luncheon. However, those who attend
are expected to make a gift to support our tuition assistance.
This year’s luncheon is more important than ever
• Mercy’s tuition and fees for 2010-11 are $17,192
• Mercy received over $1,800,000 in requests for aid for this school year and
awarded $568,075 to 23% of our student body
• Award ranges: $1,000 to $9,500 with 11% receiving awards from $8,000 to $9,500
and 31% receiving awards from $5,000 to $7,500; 35% receive awards ranging from
$3,000 to $4,750 and 23% receive awards of $1,000 to $2,750
We invite you to join us at this luncheon
100% of the gifts received for “Making A Difference” will directly support our Tuition
Assistance Program. If you or a friend are interested in attending the “Making A
Difference Luncheon”, please contact the Mercy Advancement Office at 650.762.1190
Students Embody
Catherine’s Spirit through . . .
Catherine McAuley’s spirit of courageous service is well alive at Mercy High School. Students are hearing the call to
“be Catherine in today’s world,” and are responding by taking risks to go places they have never gone and serve people
who are unfamiliar to them. Whether it is traveling to Martinique over Spring Break or walking over to Marian Care right
here on campus, students are learning about their own capacity to make a difference as they connect with the needs of
various communities. Here are a few highlights from Fall 2010 as students share the presence of Mercy in the Bay Area.
In October, the Varsity and Junior Varsity Water Polo team signed up
for the Saturday of Service in San Jose. Working with Sacred Heart
Community Services, students learned surprising facts about poverty
and heard compelling stories of community support in the midst of
hard economic times. Sacred Heart serves over 20,000 people each
year who are near or below the poverty line, helping them with job
training, food, clothing, and additional support to help them stay
afloat and move ahead. While there, Mercy students put together
almost 1,000 bags of food and household items for families who are
living on the edge. It only took 3 hours for those bags to be picked
up by working families who were needing help to subsidize their
expenses and meet the needs of their family members.
Also in October, the Cross Country Team joined with Stuart Hall to
“serve on the run” at the Nike Women’s Marathon. They volunteered
to help on a cold and rainy day, encouraging the runners and giving
them water to help them along. The Cross Country Team shows
us how to serve out of our own passions, as they turned their love
of running into support for the community and the Leukemia-
Lymphoma Society.
In November, Mercy students worked with Jewish Family and
Children Services (JFCS) to bring holiday cheer to the elderly who
were anticipating Hanukah. It was a true intergenerational event—
kindergarteners decorated the bags, adults at JFCS filled them with
Hanukah goodies, and then Mercy High School students delivered
them to the elderly in nursing homes and Alzheimer care facilities.
Students who were unfamiliar with Hanukah learned more about
the tradition from the residents, and they experienced the true spirit
of the season each time they witnessed the residents’ faces light up as
they received their Hanukah bags.
Service-Learning
Also in November, Mercy’s Green Team began the process
of landscaping around Marian Care Center right on campus.
After two Mercy teachers took a course on permaculture last
summer, they have committed to cultivating a garden and
beautifying the area. Several faculty and staff members joined
for this Saturday of Service, getting their hands dirty as they
connected with the earth and one another.
In December, Mercy girls were fortunate to
spend time with those who have invested their
whole lives embodying Catherine’s spirit of
service—the Mercy Sisters. Students went over
to Marian Care to prepare for the Christmas
holiday, where they helped the Sisters decorate
for Christmas and then played Bingo together.
The spirit of hospitality was overwhelming, as
the Sisters were the ones who provided treats and
called out Bingo for the students. After much
laughter and
a great time
connecting, Mercy students came away with a sense that
they have much more to learn from these companions of
Catherine. They are looking forward to deepening those
friendships over time—starting with a “Comfortable Cup
of Tea” in late January in which Mercy students and Mercy
Sisters will spend time getting to know each other better.
This is only the beginning—there is much more to come! Mercy girls will be seen this
Spring Semester working with Habitat for Humanity, cooking homemade meals with Project
Open Hand, going to San Jose for an Urban Plunge, deepening friendships with the Mercy
Sisters, experiencing a Poverty Simulation with Serra High School and Notre Dame, as well
as participating in Immersion Trips to Salinas, New Orleans, and Martinique. In each of these
experiences, students will be learning and sharing the spirit of Catherine—her commitment to
hospitality, her courageous service to the poor, her love for deep and authentic relationships,
and her effective action which flows from prayer.
a part of the Catherine Project
Mercy Artists Visit
Corpus Christi School
The senior art students at Mercy High
School, as the most advanced Art
students in the Visual Arts program,
are offering their valuable experience
working with young children in the arts
as part of a service learning component
to their art curriculum, and their
membership in the new chapter of
the National Art Honor Society here
at Mercy. These Honors and AP Art
students are dedicated to compassionate
service, inspired by our foundress,
Catherine McAuley, and have been
planning for this visit for weeks.
These students, guided and directed by,
their instructor, Nazira Kury-Arnold ‘98,
visited the Kindergarten/First Grade
class of Corpus Christi School in San
Francisco and taught these students
Visual Arts. Corpus Christi is an
elementary school in the Excelsior
District of SF and is run by an order
of the Salesian Sisters. A senior artist
was paired with a K/1 student for oneon-one
instruction in the Visual Arts,
Mercy Art Students and Kindergarten/First Graders of Corpus Christi School in San Francisco
following the California Visual Arts
Content Standards for Kindergarten/
First Grade. Our Mercy students
came up with the lesson plan, aligned
it to the Art standards and prepared
all the material for this lesson. Art
education is a method of discovering
each child’s skills and talents, while
enhancing their creativity and selfexpression.
Learning experiences in the
Arts contribute to the development
of academic skills, including the areas
of reading and language development,
and mathematics. We believe that this
service was not only a uniquely valuable
experience for the community of
Corpus Christi, but also for our Mercy
students. We hope to visit again next
month to foster the relationships our
Mercy students have begun with their
new art students!
Tri-School Walk for the Catholic Worker House
On September 25th students from Mercy Burlingame, Notre Dame and Serra High Schools along with their
teachers and family members, walked 4.4 miles from Mercy High School in Burlingame to the San Bruno
Catholic Worker House. Over 100 students participated in the walk to raise money and awareness for the
San Bruno Catholic Worker Hospitality House.

Mercy Welcomes New Counseling Staff
Katie Paul (daughter of Lorraine Welch Paul ’68) is in her second year as Director of
Mercy’s Counseling Program. Under Katie’s leadership, the Counseling Program now
integrates personal, academic and college counseling. Beginning with freshman year
and continuing throughout each girl’s four years, the Counseling Program provides
course advising, college guidance, academic planning and support services, positive
self-image education, and support in the transitions and challenges of high school. In
this way, each counselor builds a strong relationship with their students and by senior
year the counselor knows the girl well both academically and personally and can truly
help with their college application and planning process. Mercy welcomes to our
professional counseling staff Dot Joo, Kristin Southwick and Michele Macmillan.
Introducing Kimberlee Cazale
Mercy’s New Athletic Director
Dean of Student Life, Natalie Cirigliano ’02 works closely with Mercy’s
new Athletic Director, Kimberlee Cazale bringing a new level of energy and
enthusiasm to Crusader sports. Kimberlee brings a background in management
and coaching to her new role as Athletic Director. She began coaching
swimming and diving as a college student at Loyola Marymount working with
athletes ages five to seventeen. After graduation, she entered the insurance
industry as a commercial property and casualty underwriter for Liberty Mutual.
It did not take long before she decided to redirect her career and combine her
passion of coaching with her background in management. With over fifteen
years of Catholic education, Kimberlee understands the importance
of educating the whole person.
At Mercy, athletics are not just about winning or losing, but learning how to win or lose with integrity. Kimberlee has a vision to
take Mercy athletics to the next level. She has already begun achieving this by hiring quality coaches that understand the mission
of Mercy, renting high quality facilities near campus, and constantly working on improving and adding to the athletic department.
She is working with varsity level coaches to establish and maintain overall programs for every sport to ensure that all
levels are working on similar techniques, strategies, and goals. Most importantly, she is working with the school to
bring the Mercy community together to improve school spirit at sporting events.
Sophomore Golfer
Represents Mercy at
CCS Tournament—
Congratulations to our
sophomore, Miranda Wiss,
who shot the low round of the
league tournament! She had a
personal best and whopping
low 77 in her 18 hole match
in which she shared the lead
with Castilleja’s Harvardbound
senior. Miranda represented Mercy in the CCS
Tournament where she continued to excel. The entire
golf team had a successful season as each girl improved
by an average of 12 strokes throughout the season.
Miranda and the rest of the team are looking forward
to next year’s league matches!
Volleyball Success— Led by seniors Mary Alice
O’Reilly and Veronica Smart, our Varsity Volleyball
Team had a very successful season in which they
dominated the WBAL and continued on into the
CCS Tournament. With new head coach Nga Tran
and assistant coach Eric Ballelos, Mercy Volleyball
began the season with two first place trophies from
the Westmont and Carmichael Tournaments. The
Crusaders took this confidence into the league where
they dominated the WBAL and ultimately became
the title holders for the 2010 league championships.
The Crusaders continued their post-season play into
the CCS Tournament where they lost in the semifinals.
Overall the Crusaders were very pleased with
their season and the new competitive edge Coach Nga
brought to Mercy. We wish our senior Mary Alice
O’Reilly a successful future at San Jose State University
where she will be playing Division 1 Volleyball with a
scholarship she signed this fall.
and Winter Sports Updates...
Water Polo— Mercy Water Polo
had an amazing season taking 3rd
place in the annual Watsonville
Tournament and 2nd place overall
in their league. With the defensive
strength of senior goalie, Daria
Kekeuwaka, and the offensive
speed and agility of Alex Gomes, Katelynn McDermott,
Michelle Bradley, and Mia Wong, our team was able to have a
fun and successful season. Congratulations to Daria who was
the league’s Most Valuable Goalie! A major highlight for our
girls this season was being asked to play in California’s first
Pink Water Polo game. This game was played to honor those
Breast Cancer survivors and victims and to raise money and
awareness of the cause.
Dance and Cheer Teams Qualify in Multiple Categories
for Nationals— Mercy Cheer and Dance is doing something
unprecedented by any other school by potentially taking
six teams to Nationals this March! With our Cheer Novice
Team, Mascot Team, Varsity Pom Team, and Junior Varisty
Pom Team already qualified, our girls are stepping up their
competition level at practices in preparation and anxiously
awaiting to see if a few more of their schoolmates will be
joining them. Our Mercy Hip Hop Team and Competitive
Dance Teams are looking in prime position to qualify as
well in their qualifying meet next month, and if these two
teams qualify, Mercy will be doing the improbable by taking
girls in so many different categories. When asked about this
tremendous feat, dance coach Gary Ferguson said, “With
an all-girls school of our size, we are doing something that is
truly remarkable. The ability to take so many girls in different
categories shows how far this program has come in a short
Crusaders and Padres
Supporting Each
Other— Throughout
the fall our Mercy girls
and the Serra Padres
could be found on
one another’s campus
decorating locker
rooms and hallways in
attempts to help encourage one another before big games. Mercy and
Serra look forward to continuing this new tradition of sneaking into
the locker rooms to decorate with streamers, balloons, and signs while
spreading out Gatorades and candy throughout each sport season.
Basketball Mid-Season
Update— With an
entirely new basketball
coaching staff, Mercy
Basketball is heading
in a new direction and
has taken on a new
competitive edge which
has clearly been seen as
each team entered the
season with a winning record. Led
by the new head coach Ola Dean,
and assistant coaches, Ashley Dolezal
(2003) and Darrell Davis, the Varsity
Basketball Team started the year off
with a first place trophy from the
Live Oak Tournament and a second
place trophy from the Santa Maria
Tournament. With a new coaching
approach that has brought on a
much more aggressive play from
our girls, the Crusaders have come
into league play and shocked Crystal
Springs, ICA, and Kings Academy
into defeats. With a 3-0 league
record, our Varsity Basketball Team
has proven that they are a force to be
reckoned with this year. The team,
which is led by captains Angela
Finocchiario, Jenna Sweidan, Hayley
Fanfelle, and Samantha Requilman
are extremely excited with the success
of their season thus far and have their
eyes on the CCS Tournament!
Night at the Mansion:
Freshman Fun!
On the evening of Friday, January 21, the echoes of shrieks
and shrills could be heard coming from the many rooms of
the Kohl Mansion as over seventy freshmen gathered together
for the first annual freshmen sleepover in the Great Hall. With
over thirty upper classmen and Link Crew leaders guiding the
girls through a number of activities, the night proved to be yet
another successful addition to the Student Life portion that
Mercy High School offers its students.
The evening was filled
with fun ice breakers,
dinner in the Black
and White Room,
the lantern tour of
the school including
the infamous fourth
floor, an ice cream
social, movies and
lots of laughter.
While some girls
were able to fall
asleep amidst the giggles in the Great Halls, others stayed up
all night and morning, talking about nothing and everything!
After waking up and having breakfast, our freshmen left with
sleepy eyes, but huge smiles, stating that it was the best event
they had been to yet. “It was such an amazing night!”
It is our hope that by adding more annual activities such as this
freshmen sleepover, our students will gain a greater connection
to and appreciation for their school and one another, while
also providing extra leadership opportunities for students to
participate in.
Hark…we hear a Mercy Caroler!
On Thursday, December 9th the Mercy High School Interact Club, moderated by Mrs. Cynthia Yabes, headed down the hill to
Marion Center where they proceeded to serenade the Sisters with various Christmas Carols. It was a wonderful afternoon with
the Sisters not only enjoying the music, but participating in the singing. The Club Officers, Justine Carion, Lisa Dimech, Amanda
Odasz and Nicole Wilson, worked with Ms. Yabes to provide the Sisters with copies of the music and a Christmas ornament. The
Sisters had their own surprise for the girls and treated them to cookies and apple cider! The girls were excited to visit with the
Sisters and thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon.
Quilting for Babies Club
The Quilting for Babies Club delivered 9 finished quilts
to Stanford Hospital in September. The head nurse, Kate
Teague, gave the girls a tour of the NICU where they saw
some of the baby preemies, one as young as 16 weeks short
of her normal due date. They have 60 beds and all of them
were full. The quilts provide parents a sense of normality
besides feeding tubes, oxygen, medical equipment, etc.
After seeing the babies in the NICU and realizing the
huge need for these quilts, seniors Katherine Susa and
Jennifer Re, the co-presidents of the club, discussed how
they will try to increase their productivity to bring more
quilts by the end of the school year.
Pink Week for Breast
Cancer Awareness
Mercy’s Pink Week for Breast Cancer Awareness began
with the 2nd Annual Dig Pink Volleyball Game which
Mercy hosted at Serra High School. Walking into the
pink-decorated gym, fans and players were able to buy pink
shirts and baked goods in addition to honoring those who
have been affected by breast cancer by placing their name
on the Honor Wall. Prior to the varsity game vs. Sacred
Heart Prep, Mercy staff and students held a presentation
that honored breast cancer survivors. The Mercy Varsity
Volleyball Team won a hard fought three matches! The Dig
Pink Volleyball Game was one of many “pink” activities
that Mercy sponsored for their Pink Week for Breast Cancer
Awareness. In addition to the Dig Pink Game, which raised
$1,200 to be donated to breast cancer research, Mercy held
a Fact Day, a Pink Party for the girls as well as a pink bake
sale and t-shirt sale. Mercy’s Pink Week ended with a Pink
Rally and an official hair cutting ceremony in which 17
students, Dean of Student Life Natalie Cirigliano, as well
as Registrar Nancy Green had between 8 and 10 inches
of their hair cut so that it could be donated to “Locks of
Love” and “Pantene Beautiful Lengths” Foundations. At
this ceremony senior Chrystelle Azcona gave a speech about
being a wig recipient as a child, and counselor Katie Paul
spoke about her mom’s battle with breast cancer.
Three Weeks in France...
Written by Taylor Sanders, Senior
This summer, my classmates and I took a three week trip to
France. It consisted of three seniors and seven juniors from
Mercy. Not only was it a getaway to a foreign country but it
also was a wonderful experience to see
a whole new way of life and culture. I
have always wanted to go to France. I
had only seen Paris through pictures
and movies. I had the opportunity
to see monuments and buildings
that make Paris stand out. We saw
the illustrious Eiffel Tower, Arc
d’Triumph, Louvre, and Notre Dame.
Even though my friend Mckenna and
I were terrified of heights, we decided
to go to the top of the Eiffel tower knowing it was a once in a
life time opportunity and were stunned by the view. Versailles
was also another place that was stunning to say the least. After
four days in Paris, our group took a four hour trip on the TGV,
one of the fastest trains in the world, to the south of France.
We lived with a family in Hyeres who spoke only French
and went to an international school with other teenagers
from around the world. Not only did I learn about French
1 The Oaks • Spring 2011
culture, but also the cultures of Switzerland, Sweden, and the
Czech Republic. Most of our class time was spent discussing our
different lifestyles from schools to manners. We also visited Nice
and Monte Carlo before taking an eleven hour flight back to San
Francisco. Overall the food was fantastic, the sights magnificent,
and the memories unforgettable. I could not have asked for a
better experience in unique and extraordinary France.
Mercy offers travel to Spain and France to our upper division
French and Spanish students each summer providing travel, a
homestay and intensive language classes. Students are in class
with youth from all over the world and must truly speak the
native language as they stay in communities who generally
do not speak English.
What do Sseko sandals
and Mercy Burlingame
have in common…they
are part of the uniform,
of course!
This year a wonderful thing is happening:
Mercy High School is helping to make a
difference in the lives of Ugandan women
by purchasing the sandals that they make.
Proceeds from the sales provide funds
toward higher education for these women
and contribute to the overall economic
development of Uganda. In an effort to
continue to “Make A Difference” in other
women’s lives, Mercy girls are supporting
Sseko Designs by having this sandal become
a part of the Mercy uniform.
Laughter The Best Medicine…
In September Kathy Buckley, gifted comedienne, award-winning actress, accomplished
author, and renowned inspirational speaker, spoke to the students at Mercy. Kathy is
billed as “America’s First Hearing Impaired Comedienne” and is a five-time American
Comedy Award Nominee as Best Stand-Up Female Comedienne and winner of
countless other awards. Her appearances include The Tonight Show, Good Morning
American, Extra, CNN, HBO and many more. As a motivational speaker, she inspires
hundreds of thousands of people around the world, sharing her story of overcoming
some of the most difficult obstacles one can imagine in life, and how she met those
challenges with dignity, courage, and laughter.
Kathy told the compelling story of not being diagnosed as deaf until she was eight as
well as the struggles she endured in school and in life. She wove a wonderful story
about her life – infused with comedic humor and the stark reality of the challenges she
has faced. Her poor performance in second grade landed her in a school for mentally
and physically impaired children. It took school administrators, psychologists, and
audiologists nearly a year to discover it was just a hearing loss and not a lack of mental
acuity that was impeding her speech and language development. Today, Kathy shakes
her head as she quips to amazed audiences, “... And they called me slow?”
For many years, Kathy was a massage therapist working with cerebral palsy patients
telling them stories of her youth and hearing impairment in a comedic way, which they
loved! One day, friends encouraged her to participate in a Stand-Up Comedy Contest,
which would benefit the children. Having no stand-up comedy experience, she had
three weeks to practice what other comediennes have been doing for many years. Much
to her surprise, she got up, gave her routine – not hearing the laughter mind you, but
hearing the vibrations from the laughter. Imagine her surprise when she won and went
on to the semi-finals where she placed 4th nationwide. With this, a new career was
born! She later was able to obtain hearing aids that opened up a new world to her.
Kathy believes that “our mind is the most important tool that we have” and this belief
saw her through challenging times. Kathy ended her presentation by telling the girls “to
always respect themselves and to, most of all, live in the moment and be in the now.”
Her final comment to the girls was “If you want to make God laugh – tell him your plan!”
Sister Mary
Waskowiak
Visits Mercy...
Sister Mary Waskowiak, a native
of California, and President of the
Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the
Americas since July 2005, came to visit
the Mercy Students this past August.
She came to talk with the girls about
her role as President of the Institute,
what it means to serve others and the
ongoing Catherine’s Project that Mercy
High School Students will participate in
this year.
Sr. Mary encouraged the girls to really
believe in themselves and know that
they are each very special and wonderful young women, each bringing different gifts to the table.
She asked them to try to incorporate “Mercy” into all aspects of their lives and that by doing
so, they will continue to grow, to reach out to others and serve God. She asked them to think
about what Catherine McAuley might ask of each of them. Sr. Mary concluded by asking them
to continue the good works that they do here at Mercy
High School and to live a merciful life in the spirit that our Foundress, Sr. Catherine McAuley
did before them!
Sr. Mary has served as facilitator and/or presenter for groups of women and men religious in
Argentina, Chile, England, Guyana, Ireland, Peru, South Africa, the United States and Zambia.
Sr. Mary served as councilor on the Institute Leadership Team from 1991 to 1999 and as President
of the Sisters of Mercy Regional Community of Burlingame, California, from 2003 to 2005.
Sr. Mary also served as President of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR)
from 1996 to 1999, during which time she participated as official observer to the Bishops’ Synod
for the Americas at the Vatican. Her prior ministry experiences include secondary education,
parish ministry, seminary field education, Sisters of Mercy vocation and formation ministry, and
directing Mercy Center in Burlingame.
Sr. Ellene Egan Spends
the day at Mercy...
This past November, Sr. Ellene Egan, Liaison Member of
the Education Sponsorship Council, visited the Mercy
campus. Sr. Ellene spent time with various groups in order
to better understand how we are “living out the Mission of
Mercy education.” Her schedule for the day included visits
to a Junior Religion Class, meeting with the Leadership
Team, lunch and meeting with student leaders and an
orientation visit with our AMES Program.
Mercy Week 2010
During the week of September 20th, the Mercy Community celebrated Mercy Week!
During this fun-filled week, the girls participated in many activities to celebrate
Mercy and to welcome the new Freshmen. Mercy Week culminated on the Friday of
this week with “Mercy Day.” On this very special day, the students, faculty and staff
celebrated their connection to the larger Mercy family. As an institution founded by
the Sisters of Mercy we are part of a large network of schools, hospitals and other
service organizations which bare the name Mercy. On September 24th all these
institutions take time to stop and remember our history as we celebrate the Feast of
Our Lady of Mercy. It was on this day in 1827 that Catherine McAuley, the foundress of
the Sisters of Mercy, dedicated the first House of Mercy in Dublin, Ireland. The House of
Mercy served as a shelter for women in need, a school for children and at times a soup
kitchen for the hungry. As we celebrate Mercy Day we remember Catherine McAuley,
all the Sisters of Mercy who have gone before us and their compassionate service to
those in need and are inspired by them to make a difference to the needy of our own
time. At Mercy Burlingame, Mercy Day began with an all school photo taken on the
patio near the mansion followed by a beautiful Eucharistic Liturgy in the Motherhouse
Chapel. The students then changed into their class colors and the day continued
with a barbeque luncheon, games, skits and a spirited rally on “the green.”
ROYAL . . . Realizing Our Youth As Leaders
Maggie De Vera ’87, Founder
Maggie De Vera ’87 is the President and CEO of ROYAL
- Realizing Our Youth as Leaders, Inc., a non-profit
organization dedicated to providing at-risk youth with the
skills to identify positive opportunities that break the cycle
of limited choices that inevitably leads to negative social
consequences. After years of experience as a Clinician,
Administrator, Family and Child Advocate, Social Worker
and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Maggie
recognized a gap in effective services for a growing
population of forgotten children. In 2003, Maggie
founded ROYAL, which prepares disadvantaged and/or
at-risk youth, ages 5 to 18, for success in life by providing
therapeutic counseling services as well as training in personal
empowerment and family and community leadership.
Maggie returned to Mercy this fall to speak with our
students. Her accomplishments are wide ranging from
acting, to CEO and therapist. Maggie has also been on the
speaking circuit at a variety of organizations, schools, and
parishes as well as radio and television appearances. If that
were not enough, adding to her Master’s Degree and Clinical
Certificates, Maggie will soon be referred to as Dr. Maggie
upon completion of her Doctoral Candidacy.
Maggie believes and tries to live out the ideals of Catherine
McAuley in her everyday life. She was the first to admit that
life at Mercy was not always the smooth ride, but that she
tried to be involved, and that because certain faculty treated
her with dignity and believed in her, she grew up to be the
strong and caring woman she is today. Her high school
days helped to shape and mold her into who she is now….
a woman who wakes up every day feeling fulfilled!
Maggie encouraged the girls to work through life’s
challenges and to remember to be true to themselves.
Maggie has demonstrated success in working intensively
with children, adults, and families who have significant
behavioral, emotional and mental health issues. She is a
well-respected therapist, trainer and consultant in the Bay
Area. Backed with extensive experience (over 19 years)
and education/training, Maggie is known in her field for
working effectively with the most challenging cases and
currently runs a private therapy practice.
Starting ROYAL gave Maggie the privilege to work with
the top 3% of at-risk children in San Francisco. Maggie
stated that you “don’t want to give people fish, but rather
you want to teach them to fish, so that they will always
have food.” She said they have seen such amazing results
in these youth, and that the goal of preparing them for life
and leadership is the ultimate reward of her job!
Maggie is one of the few professionals who have
successfully packaged 28 hours in a 24 hour day
and we thank her for generously giving of her
time to all of us here at Mercy today.
Alumnae Daughters!
P.S. We Care
Mercy Students Start Foundation
Juniors Patty De Luca and Stephanie Sierra started their own
foundation, P. S. We Care, to help people with autism. After
volunteering at Hillsdale High School’s Special Education
summer school program, the girls began asking themselves
“How can we help them? How can we give back to these kids?”
For Stephanie, working at Hillsdale’s Special Ed Summer School
program was an eye-opening experience. Stephanie and Patty
had the extraordinary opportunity of working individually with
each of the students. Stephanie was struck by how the simplest
activities brought joy to the students. “As complicated as our
lives are, I realized we sometimes forget the simple joys we
experience. The truth is we are given so very much and here was
an opportunity to help kids with much less.”
For Patty, autism is a part of her life. At the age of two, Patty’s
older brother was diagnosed with Autism, OCD, and Epilepsy.
“My brother changed my life. Having him in my life made
Because of Patty’s brother and the kids who they worked with
this summer, the girls wanted to start our own foundation called
P.S. We Care. On May 1st they are hoping to have their first
annual walk-a-thon at Hillsdale High School to help raise money
for people with autism. Funds raised from the walk-a-thon will
be donated to Community Gate Path, a non-profit that fosters
hope, dignity and independence among children and adults with
disabilities. They are looking for volunteers, so for those of you
who would like to help…we need you! Watch for information on
Mercy’s website or contact Mercy’s Advancement Office at
outstanding presentation. Stephanie Sierra is the daughter of
2000’s
Loubna Qutami ’03, a graduate student in Ethnic
Studies at San Francisco State University, returned
to Mercy in October as a guest speaker in our Global
Speaker Series.
As President of the Student Body at Mercy, Loubna
first began to pursue her passion to respond to
the needs of others. Since then she has spread
her wings by utilizing her given talents in many
ways. She has worked as the Special Project
Coordinator at the Arab Cultural and Community
Center where her responsibilities include social
services coordination, youth programming, and
cultural competency presentations to local service
providers, domestic violence case management,
civic engagement and policy reform work.
Loubna stated that we must always remember to respect the role that we play in our community and that nothing that we do is “private”,
as we are all intrinsically connected to one another. She further stated that each of us has the opportunity to become either a “passer
or an actor” in life…. we can pass on and pretend that we did not know what was going on, or we can act and entrench ourselves in the
injustice and help to change the world. She told the girls that college is a place where you can explore yourselves and encouraged each
of them to be deliberate, to ask questions and to find their passion as the opportunity to be a change maker is up to each of us.
Dawn Bailey ‘06 graduated from the University of California Santa Barbara with a major in Studio Art. She’s done mission work in Mexico
and Kenya, and has been a youth leader in her parish and diocese. She led the design and installation of the new labyrinth at St. Mike’s
University Church, made from recycled materials. The idea of incorporating recycled materials was inspired by Dawn’s concern for the
immense amount of plastic waste discarded into our ocean. Dawn is currently an intern at St. Mary’s in West Harlem, NY, working for
AmeriCorps through Episcopal Social Services at the Early Head Start Program in the Bronx, providing care to families with very
young children.
The Alumnae Board meets 4-5 times per year and sponsors
the above mentioned events! We have a great time and would
love to have more people join us! If you are interested you may
The Mercy Mass Program—At each of our
school liturgies, the students and faculty of Mercy
High School pray for those people who have been
acknowledged in the Mercy Mass Program. Not
only are donations made in memory of a loved
one, but also to honor others on special occasions
such as anniversaries, birthdays, or at times of
illness. To enroll a loved one in the Mercy Mass
Program, simply contact the Mercy Advancement
Office at 650.762.1190 or salbers@mercyhsb.com
and we will send you a Mass Envelope. Once you
have enrolled someone, we will send them a Mass
Card telling them or their loved one that you have
