Unto the Populace of Mons Tonitrus, do
We send Warmest Holiday Greetings!
First, we must say “Thank You” to
everyone for making Southern Crusades
such a wonderful event. We had
beautiful weather (only one really cold
night!), great fighting, and great fun! It
was an amazing event, and we have
many of you to thank for that. Lady
Moire, m’lady Siobhan, Lord Finnian,
Lord Wulfric, Her Ladyship Brigid and
Lord Finn, Lady Mariette and His Lordship Wolfgang, Lord TakaGo, Lord Heigo, m’lady Miyako, and everyone
else who donated their time and effort to make Southern Crusades a success—Thank You!!
We would also like to thank, again, Dame Angele and Mistress Aimee Marie, who traveled from Twin Moons
to teach our November Arts and Sciences class. Their class was on clay casting, and everyone who wanted one
got to make their very own Viking pendant!
We hope everyone had a Thanksgiving filled with food, family, joy, and laughter. This holiday season, let us all
remember those we have lost and appreciate those we have with us, and enjoy the time we have together as
family and a Barony. Which, if course, includes Yule Court! We anticipate a memorable feast and much fun as
we dance and game the night away with our guests and friends. There is also a Silent Auction, to fund a
Baronial feast at Estrella. Their Majesties will also be in attendance, so this will be a very special Yule, indeed!
Speaking of Estrella…There are practices, and events with war practices, and at least one ‘unofficial’ war
practice hosted by His Majesty on December 26th at Encanto Park. Even if you are not a fighter, please come
enjoy the day with the Kingdom and support our fighters. Our Barony will also be participating in the ‘Sea of
Blue and Gold’ requested by His Majesty. Some volunteers and Her Excellency have come up with some
suggestions for new tabards, mandolins, and hats and We look forward to discussing the design and how they
will be made at the December Business Meeting (December 4th). Please also consider donating some of your
time at War to volunteering. Our Barony has always been known for being generous with their time and
3

energy, so let’s please keep that reputation to help ensure our guests, who come from a long way in many
cases, have the best War possible.
PLEASE GIVE YOUR CAMPING INFORMATION TO LADY MOIRA AT YOUR EARLIEST CONVENIENCE. Even if you
are not certain you will be at Estrella, it would be better to have a little extra room than not enough.
We are approaching the end of our time in service as your Baron and Baroness; only 5 more Baronial events
(including Estrella), and 9 more Populace meetings remain before your new Baron and Baroness step into Our
shoes! Who will Our successors be? Letters are due March 23rd, 2013 and We encourage all who are
interested to speak to Us at any time to ask questions, etc. We have enjoyed, learned, eaten, drank, received,
and given much in Our time and look forward to sharing our experience and passing the Mace to worthy Heirs
come August.
In Service Always,
Heinrich Juliana
When did you
discover the
SCA?
Lord Martin de
Gras: Summer of
1990. I was stationed
at Fort Ord,
(Monterey) CA. I
attended a Unit
Armorer
certification class
and the instructor
told us about this
group that did Ren
faire type activities
on the weekend. It
sounded interesting so my newly acquired bride and
I went down to the park looking for a full Pennsic
type event with banners flapping in the breeze.
When we saw ten people sitting in a circle wearing
cloaks, we thought it looked like a bad D&D group
and didn’t disturb them. In May of 1992, we
attended an actual Ren faire at a castle in Germany.
The Shire of Meadowmarsh (Hanau, Germany) had
a demo table setup and one of the people at the table
was in my unit on Fleigerhorst Kaserne. We joined
the local group and were active with them till we
left Germany in 1994.
Lady Finola Elizabeth Sutherland: At a Ren faire
in a castle in Germany. We had almost got into it in
Monterey, California before we went to Germany,
but we were moving, so that just didn't work out.
What is it about the SCA that drew you
into joining?
Lord Martin de Gras: History was my favorite
subject in school and I think Western Europe in the
Middle Ages is probably my favorite area of
interest. I liked going to
events in real castles and
membership meant we got
the local newsletter. This
was critical to knowing
what was going on since
this was before internet
was widely available to the
public.
Lady Finola Elizabeth
Sutherland: That would be
my husband. He really
wanted to check it out, so I
went along.
When did you become
active in the SCA?
Lord Martin de Gras: 1992
Lady Finola Elizabeth Sutherland: In Germany in
1992-3
What keeps you active in the SCA?
Lord Martin de Gras: I enjoy the camaraderie,
friendships, and fun that I have with people of like
interest.
Lady Finola Elizabeth Sutherland: There are a few
things. The people that are like family to me. The
fact that my kids enjoy it. The projects that I do for
us, and for the fire pits and stars... I love that part.
And the drums...the drums at war. I sleep better
with the drums going than I do anywhere else in the
world.
What is your favorite activity and why?
Lord Martin de Gras: Court and Field Heraldry.
Court is mostly an improve theater type of stage
used to recognize the achievements and
5

contributions of the populace. Field Heraldry
transforms two guys hitting each other with sticks in
to a tournament fought for honor and chivalry. I like
to facilitate the fun for others to enjoy.
Lady Finola Elizabeth Sutherland: I really enjoy
taking classes at Collegium or at War. I don't get to
as many as I would like to, but I love learning to do
new things or do the things I already do better.
I love driving the golf carts for special needs at
Estrella, too. I get to play taxi driver, and talk to
people I would probably not get to meet otherwise.
It's a lot of fun, and people are almost always glad
to have you offer them a ride.
What is your favorite memory in the
SCA?
Lord Martin de Gras: There are a lot of memories I
like to think back on. Participating in friend’s vigils
or elevation to peerage ceremonies, seeing my
awesome wife recognized for her hard work,
hearing my kids used proper etiquette in addressing
a stranger with impressive regalia. These are a few
of my favorite things. . .
Lady Finola Elizabeth Sutherland: I can't pick just
one. The most recent is Sir Vallora being knighted.
I have a whole lot of love and respect for her, and
getting to watch that happen for someone that my
daughter admires so much, gave me a great dose of
stardust. Anytime my husband or children have
gotten awards ranks at the top. I love seeing good
things happen for people I care about. All my
favorite memories revolve around people I care
about being recognized in some way.
What advice would you give to a
newcomer interested in the SCA?
Lord Martin de Gras: If you see something that
interest you, go up to someone and say “Can you
tell me more about this?” Most people in the SCA
love to share what they are working on and will be
glad to tell you all about it.
Lady Finola Elizabeth Sutherland: Tell someone
you are new.
It can take more than once for people to notice you
at fighter practice or your first event. SPeak up! If
people know, there will be someone who will help
you. If you have questions ASK!
Take your time. Find your niche, your "it" that you
really love doing. That can take some time. Don't
immediately jump into one household or another
group, try lots of new things and see what sticks.
Be patient with those of us who have been around
for a while. Sometimes we forget what it's like to be
new and have a bunch of questions. Sometimes we
forget that someone we have gotten to know is
brand new and may not know everything that is
going on. We came to Atenveldt the first time,
about 15 years ago. We came back here 5 years ago.
I am still learning new things about this Kingdom.
6

This section is for all who wish to enter, are entering or have been here longer than
they wish to admit. Words of wisdom, advice, lessons we have learned, tales around the camp
fire and everything in between.
No kidding…. There I was….
Minding my own business just shaking out the dust
from my veils when my darling Finnian tells me,
“Allow me to escort you to the facilities”. I just
knew something was up by the way he was
grinning. So I placed my hand on his arm and we
strolled to the stone buildings near our encampment.
I could see off to my left a gathering of
Ladies…Ladies whom I know to be delightfully
wicked and top full of mischief. I wondered just
what they could be up to for they were across the
lane, sitting on benches facing the showers and
were holding small cards with numbers on them. Oh
my. I could feel the tingle of naughty thoughts and
laughter in the air. I was called to join them on their
adventure. What exactly will we be doing was my
first thought to be quickly followed by how much
trouble will this little adventure get me into?
After quaffing a bit of yummy from a very large
flask filled with bad decisions, I took my place on a
bench to see what would happen. Oh my…one by
one the fighters of Atenveldt were strolling by what
I later learned was “Cougaril Corner” and the
Ladies would show their appreciation of
their…efforts…by raising a card with numbers on
it. Oh the delightfully wicked verbiage and
interaction that took place. How I blushed when
Master Simon performed for the Ladies and a joyful
time was had by all. Truly, Atenveldt has the best
fighters in the Known World….both on and off the
field do they spar with word and deed.
Delightful….simply delightful!
The Honorable Lady Brigit Ni Scheachnasigh
Around Christmas of 92 or 93, I don't really
remember, our local shire of Meadowmarsh had
Yule at the castle that was just down the road. We
had an arrangement with them; we helped with their
Ren Faires, by having a demo and being around in
garb. We also helped with spring cleaning and
getting the castle ready for winter. For doing that,
we got to use the castle for 3 local events a year.
One of these was our local Yule/Twelfth night.
They allowed us to use the feast hall as well as the
kitchen for this event. I did a lot of the cooking for
that event, some ahead of time, and some on site.
Cooking in a castle kitchen is definitely an
experience. The hearth of the kitchen fireplace was
about the size of a door. It was large enough to hold
logs. Big logs. That should have been a clue.
We started a fire, and we did cook on it. BUT, (big
but there) if you are not burning large portions of
trees on it, there isn't enough of an updraft to make
the smoke go UP the chimney. Instead it filled the
kitchen. Luckily, the kitchen had two large
windows so we could get enough air flow to get
most of the smoke out. We did have a good meal
that night, but if I ever cook on a large hearth like
that again, I will burn TREES, not little sticks.
Lady Finola Elizabeth Sutherland
Order of the Sable Chevronels (Service)
Given to those individuals who distinguish themselves through unselfish effort and service. The
Chevronel, an ancient symbol denoting excellence, is the symbol for this order. Holders of this
award are styled Companions of the Order of the Sable Chevronels and are entitled to place the
initials CSC after their names.
Order of the Silver Thunderbolt (Hardsuit)
Given to those individuals who distinguish themselves through both excellence on the field
of honor and a willingness to teach the arts of combat to others. In ancient times, the Roman
Legions of Gaul used the thunderbolt to symbolize the power, might, and majesty of Rome.
The thunderbolt symbolizes the tremendous potential and strength of the forces of nature.
Therefore, it is a most fitting symbol for this order. Holders of this award are styled
Companions of the Order of the Silver Thunderbolt and are entitled to place the initials CST
after their names.
Order of the Sable Harps (Arts and Sciences)
Given to those individuals who distinguish themselves through both excellence in the gentle
arts of these Current Middle Ages and a willingness to teach others. The Harp is a most
ancient symbol for the arts and the noble pursuit of peace and is therefore a most fitting
symbol for this accolade. Holders of this award are styled Companions of the Order of the
Sable Harps and are entitled to place the initials CSH after their names.
Keeper of the Silver Morion (Light Weapons)
Given to those individuals who distinguish themselves through their great skill with light
weapons (rapier and previously shanai) and their willingness to teach others. The symbol of
the order is the Morion helm, which was worn by so many during the age of exploration and
discovery. Holders of this award are styled Keepers of the Silver Morion and are entitled to
place the initials KSM after their names.
11

There is no
badge for
this award.
Keeper of the Sable Arrows (Archery)
Given to those individuals who distinguish themselves through both excellence in the skills
of archery and a willingness to teach those skills to others. The archers skill and worth
has been proven on the battlefield and as hunters throughout history. A sheaf of arrows is a
fitting symbol of this order. Holders of this award are styled Keepers of the Sable Arrows and
are entitled to place the initials KSA after their names.
Guardian of the Saguaro (Courtesy and Grace)
Given to those individuals who consistently display exceptional courtesy and grace. Like the
flower of the plant from which the order takes its name, such individuals are indeed rare
and the Saguaro is a fitting symbol for this order. The insignia of this order is an aiguillette,
sable, argent, vert, and or, worn on the left shoulder. Holders of this award are styled
Guardians of the Saguaro and are entitled to place the initials GOS after their names.
Order of the Stellae Argenteae (Silver Stars Youth)
Given to those young individuals who distinguish themselves with an understanding of life
in these Current Middle Ages, who consistently display appropriate courtesies, and who
render service unto Their Excellencies and the populace of the Barony to the best of their
age, ability, and knowledge. Companionship in the order requires that the recipient has
attained no more than 16 years of age and has been active in the Society for at least two
years. The Star is an ancient symbol representing states and empires. Therefore, since the
children of Mons Tonitrus represent our very future, the star is a most fitting symbol of this
order. The insignia of this order is a medallion, pendant from a ribbon vert, bearing
(fieldless) per chevron throughout argent and sable, in base a mullet of 8 points argent all
within a bordure sable. Members of this order are styled Companions of Order of the Stellae
Argenteae.
Order of the Defender of Mons Tonitrus
Given to those good gentles called upon to serve as Baron and Baroness of the Barony March
of Mons Tonitrus, in recognition of their faithful service to the populace of the Barony and
the Dream. This order both recognizes the tears and the laughter, the sorrows and the joys,
and the pain and the pleasure experienced by those who have enjoyed the singular honor
and privilege of serving as Baron and Baroness of these lands.
Any member of the Barony may nominate any
other member for a Baronial award at any time.
The nominee must be a paid member to be
recognized. Please send your recommendations to:
monstonitrus@gmail.com
The same is true for Kingdom Awards. Please visit
the Kingdom website at:
http://atenveldt.org/People/AwardRecommendatio
ns to make recommendations.
Yule Log’s tradition can be traced back to the days
of the Viking. To celebrate their belief in the
powers of the gods, festivals were held in honor of
Odin or Thor, commonly called the Yule Father.
The Yule Log was burned in honor of the gods, to
bring luck in the coming year and to celebrate the
Sun’s rebirth from the southern reaches. May the
light and warmth from this Yule Log guide you to
celebrate with the Barony March of Mons Tonitrus
at our Yule Court on Saturday, December 15, 2012
Southwind - New Specifications for Publishing Events
From the Atenveldt Chronicler... Changes are coming for the way event notices go into the Southwind.
Beginning with the January 2013 issue of the Southwind, the specifications below will be applied for articles for
the Southwind. The new specifications will always appear on page 3 of the Southwind and posted to
www.atenveldt.org soon.
Why do we need to change?
The current Southwind – our printed and mailed newsletter is subject to strict guidelines on size and mandatory
content. Every month we have 16, 8x11 pages that must include information on officers, local groups, royalty,
bids, crown letters... and so much more. Ergo, every month we are tight on space for event notices and the
chronicler is forced to edit them drastically so they will fit.
Where can I advertise all the neat things happening at my event to the Populace?
There are many ways to promote your event. Put full event details in the online supplement, the ‘Southwind
Xtra’ where we have no restrictions on page count; color, and live links to other websites. A new ‘Southwind
Xtra’ is posted every month to http://enewsletter.sca.org/ and SCA members can login, read and print any pages
from the publication.
In addition, advertise your event on Facebook pages or Yahoo groups - post files or share links. There is a
Kingdom of Atenveldt Facebook page, plus every barony and shire has a group/page on Facebook/Yahoo.
How to Submit an Event Notice in the Southwind
Send your submissions to chronicler@atenveldt.org. Your submission MUST include a complete event
article as well as a signed, completed Event Form filed with the Kingdom Seneschal, the Kingdom Calendar
Officer and the Kingdom Chronicler.
Deadline - These must be submitted no later than midnight the first of the month directly before the month the
event is held (eg. for an event in July, the deadline is midnight June 1st). Late submissions may not be
published.
Maximum size is 7.75” wide by 4.75” high – submit text or a display advert. (Display adverts are encouraged)
For Text - Use a single font, minimum 9pt; basic formatting OK (bullets, bold, underlines); do not use tabs or
create columns. Attached MS word, .txt or Open Office files are preferred.
17

Display Advert - Use WHITE BACKGROUNDS and LINE DRAWING images (to make it readable in print
and online). Minimum fonts size is 8pt, larger is preferred. Chose fonts wisely as some ornate fonts are VERY
hard to read when printed. Electronic formats, in order of preference, are: .pdf, .doc, .pub, .jpg
Art & Creative Works All art submitted with flyers must have permission to publish. This information should
be included in the email accompanying your flyer. All original creative works, including cover or filler art,
writing or photos must be accompanied by the correct release form. Flyers containing art obtained from public
domain sources must submit source of art.
Event articles must contain the following minimum information
Event date (day, month and legal year)
 Sponsoring group’s name
Site name, street address, city, state and zip code
Exact site opening and closing times
Event Steward(s) name (SCA and modern) and contact information
Site fee(s), including $5 non-member surcharge. Include the following phrase “Make checks payable to:
SCA, Inc/your group name”
BRIEF details such as directions to the site, event activities and any merchant information.
If you do not receive a receipt from the Chronicler, Calendar Officer, or Seneschal by the 2nd of the month,
please resend your submission.
A Kingdom Calendar Event must be listed on the Atenveldt Kingdom Calendar published in the Southwind.
Check that your event is listed; if it is not contact the Kingdom Calendar Officer at calendar@atenveldt.org to
confirm your event.
Remember awards, law changes and other Official Kingdom business can only be conducted at events
published on the Atenveldt Kingdom Calendar in the Southwind. Send your submissions to:
chronicler@atenveldt.org
