7 <strong>Biogas</strong> potential<br />

166 Mtoe is the theoretic potential of primary<br />

energy production from biogas in 2020, according to<br />

a German study. 11 Compared to the present use of 5,9<br />

Mtoe this is a theoretical figure that will not be reached<br />

in the next decades.<br />

1 TWh primary energy from biogas<br />

per 1 Million people in <strong>Europe</strong>.<br />

This potential of 500 Twh (43 Mtoe) <strong>for</strong> the 500 million<br />

people living in the EU27 is derived from agricultural<br />

byproducts and waste alone (organic waste from<br />

households and industries, sewage sludge, manure,<br />

catch crops, landscape cleaning). These waste streams<br />

strongly correlate with the size of the population and<br />

studies from Austria, Sweden, Germany and the United<br />

kingdom all arrive at a magnitude of approximately 1<br />

Twh per 1 million people, which if used <strong>for</strong> example as a<br />

vehicle fuel could more than cover the 10 % target <strong>for</strong><br />

the share of renewables in the transportation sector <strong>for</strong><br />

2020.<br />

20% yearly growth<br />

In 2007 the production in <strong>Europe</strong> reached 5,9 Mtoe,<br />

an increase of over 20 % compared to 2006.<br />

Based on different studies and the experience of member<br />

countries the realistic potential <strong>for</strong> biogas until 2020 can be<br />

calculated <strong>for</strong> the EU 27 as follows:<br />

AEBIOM assumes that 25Mio ha agricultural land (arable<br />

land and green land) can be used <strong>for</strong> energy in 2020 without<br />

harming the food production and the national environment.<br />

This land will be needed to produce raw materials <strong>for</strong> the first<br />

generation fuels, <strong>for</strong> heat, power and second generation fuels<br />

and <strong>for</strong> biogas crops. In the AEBIOM scenario<br />

• 15 Mio ha land is used <strong>for</strong> first generation biofuels<br />

(wheat, rape, sugarbeet, etc.)<br />

• 5 Mio ha <strong>for</strong> short rotation <strong>for</strong>ests, miscanthus and other<br />

solid biomass production and<br />

• 5 Mio ha <strong>for</strong> biogas crops.<br />

On this basis the potential <strong>for</strong> biogas in 2020 is estimated as<br />

follows:
