The rules in this book are set in order to facilitate your organization’s success, thus making THON a more successful event for all. These rules are implemented to ensure the integrity of THON while setting fair standards for all fundraising organizations. Above all, THON is a philanthropic event, not a competition, and all money raised is for the aid of the children and their families. Your cooperation with all the guidelines outlined in the Rulebook is appreciated. Remember, it is For The Kids! 1.2. Any individual or organization suspected of being in violation of these rules will be subject to investigation by the Overall Committee. All evidence will be presented to the Overall Committee and a fair and speedy judgment will be reached. If the organization is found in violation of these rules, it will be assessed with a penalty proportionate to the severity of the violation. 1.2.1. PLEASE NOTE: The 2013 Rulebook is subject to changes and revisions at the discretion of the Overall Committee and in the best interest of THON as a philanthropic organization benefiting The Four Diamonds Fund. 1.3. FUNDRAISING ORGANIZATION REQUIREMENTS 1.3.1. All THON student organizations must be recognized by The Pennsylvania State University. This rule does not apply to Independent Dancer Couples. 1.3.2. To start the process of becoming a recognized student organization, please report to the Student Activities office in 209 HUB. Once the steps have been taken to be recognized by the University, the organization may register in the THON Office at 210 HUB for THON fundraising organization status. 1.3.3. Organizations must complete all steps of the process before participating in any THON fundraising activities. To verify Penn State student organization status, please visit clubs.psu.edu or confirm with a staff member in 209 HUB. 1.3.4. PLEASE NOTE: NO ORGANIZATION MAY USE THON’S NAME IN ASSOCIATION WITH ITS OWN FUNDRAISING ORGANIZATION NAME IN ANY FORM OF MEDIA. For example, an organization MAY say they are “Organization X Benefiting THON,” but they may NOT say they’re “Organization X THON” Acceptable use of THON’s name when coupled with a student organization name is 6
Rulebook 2013 Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon allowed on merchandise after permission has been granted by the Overall Merchandise Chairperson. Please see Section 3.0 for more information. 1.3.4.1. PLEASE NOTE: These rules apply to organization’s social media and email accounts as well. No organization may use THON’s name in its own social media or email account. For example, an organization MAY be organizationx.ftk@gmail.com but they may NOT be organizationx.thon@gmail.com. 1.3.4.2. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Reddit pages MAY be “Organization X FTK”, but they may NOT be “Organization X THON” or “Organization X Benefiting THON”. 1.3.4.2.1. Organization X Benefiting THON IS an appropriate email signature, an appropriate title of an alternative fundraiser, and an appropriate description of an organization’s mission. 1.3.4.2.2. All organizations found in violation of this rule will gain three (3) points. Penalties associated with three points include meeting with Appropriate Member(s) of the Overall Committee and/or Captain Committee. A complete list of points and all associated penalties is available in Appendices D and E. 1.3.4.3. NO organizations may participate in “Twitterthons”, “Like Drives” or similar types of online fundraising through social media. This applies to any official organization social media accounts. 1.3.4.3.1. Organizations cannot endorse or publicize other “Twitterthons”, “Like Drives” or similar type of fundraising. 1.3.4.3.2. All organizations found engaging in “Twitterthons” will gain four (4) points. Penalties associated with four (4) points include: meeting with appropriate member(s) of the Overall Committee, loss of Floor Pass(es) for THON Weekend, loss of Dancer Couple(s) for THON Weekend, loss of participation in THON, 100% loss of funds raised from given occasion. 1.3.4.4. No organization may use any footage that is used in any THON video for their video. 1.3.4.5. Please contact the Overall Public Relations Chairperson, Cat Powers (public.relations@thon.org) with any questions. 1.4. Volunteer Requirements 1.4.1. THON is a student-run event. Therefore, all student volunteers, Chairpersons, Captains, Committee Members, organization chairs, and dancers must either be full or part-time undergraduate or graduate Penn State students, students on a registered Internship/Co-op/Foreign Study assignment recognized by the Pennsylvania State University within the academic year, August 2012 until May 2013, or an alumni member of Dance Marathon Alumni Interest Group (Dance Marathon AIG). 7
