When I want to buy a new electrical product, irrespective of 

whether I’m looking for a new TV, or for a replacement washing 

machine, I want to be served by a knowledgable salesman, who 

knows the products inside out, and can offer me advice on which 

model, or models, to consider.

Dyson DC44 Digital Slim 

Dyson has launched what it claims is the most powerful cordless vacuum, the new DC44 

Digital Slim. A lightweight aluminium wand reaches from floor to ceiling and can be 

detached for compact spaces like car cleaning. Weighing just 2.3kg, DC44 has a balanced 

weight distribution for high, low, awkward and in-between spaces. 

Digital Slim uses patented root Cyclone technology and the Dyson digital motor, a small, 

lightweight, high density motor that is up to three times faster than conventional motors. 

New battery technology delivers a high constant fade-free 20 minute run time with 

no drop in performance. For stubborn dirt, a button can trigger eight minutes of boost 

suction. Dyson digital motors are engineered to be small and powerful. Using digital pulse technology, they spin at up to 104,000rpm – 

five times faster than an F1 race car. ■

The Humax DTr-T1000 is the first set-top 

box for the YouView subscription-free 

digital TV and catch up service. The set-top

Samsung DA-E750 Audio Dock 

Samsung has unveiled the DA-E750 Audio Dock with Valve Amplifier, its first dual-docking system which supports a broad range of 

Galaxy S and Apple devices including the Galaxy S2, Galaxy Note, Galaxy Player, iPhone, iPod and iPad via both docked and 

wireless connectivity. 

The DA-E750 has a high gloss dark wood finish and features a 2.1-channel speaker 

and built-in subwoofer with 100W of sound. It also features an analogue input 

and a USB port to play audio files directly from a music player or portable 

hard drive. 

The actual dock arm is retractable, popping out of the rear of the unit, so 

you can tidy things up and hide it away when not in use. The docking arm 

also features both the Apple dock and a standard Micro-USB, so this has been

Once considered a luxury item, the dishwasher is 

becoming an everyday household fixture, but what’s 

surprising is that only one in five of us are actually 

choosing to have one installed in our homes. 

One of the most common concerns about dishwashers is the energy and 

water consumption that is required, but manufacturers are striving to make 

huge advancements in minimising water and energy use to ensure that their 

products are as efficient as possible. 

This has seen the development and integration of electronic sensor 

technology into the dishwasher – these sensors manage exactly the right amount 

of water required for each and every wash and ensure that not a drop is wasted. 

Dishwashers can save up to three weeks of time over the course of a year 

and use just under 2% of a household’s daily water requirements compared to the 

whopping 10% that is needed to do the washing up by hand. 

Energy-wise, dishwashers are super efficient, using only 1.5kW rather than the 

2.5kW required to fill a sink with hot water and manually wash up. 

Manufacturers have focused on developing the internal capacity offerings of 

their dishwashers, and the space available is now greatly increasing – this means 

that you can wash more for less! The internal capacity of the latest dishwashers is

Hotpoint’s new ‘Flexiload’ interior gives

It features a new direct water spray system that makes sure that each jet of 

water has equal pressure to get into every corner of the dishwasher. Inside, the 

internal baskets have been redesigned with new handles and thicker external cords 

so you can tidy up the dishes from that late night dinner party in one go. 

The Advance IDF145 has an LED interface and five programmes, including an 

intensive 65º wash, a 35 minute rapid wash and ‘Time4You’, a unique programme 

from Indesit guaranteeing exceptional washing performance in just over an hour. 

Slovenian company Gorenje says that its dishwashers offer a host of benefits 

to enable the best performance and results, with energy and water saving features.

have a time delay setting so the consumer can take advantage of less expensive 

energy tariffs, and they offer internal flexibility that can be customised according 

to a family’s needs. 

Beko has received the Best Buy Award from Which? for two of its dishwasher 

models, the fully automatic One Touch (DFN1000X) and the standard size integrated 

model (DW686). 

All Beko dishwashers feature top baskets that can be easily height adjusted, 

even when fully loaded, to accommodate large pots and pans. 

Beko says if you think your kitchen is too small to accommodate a 

dishwasher, think again – manufacturers now offer a host of slimline models that

commonplace, and these are beneficial as they allow you to wash more

my wife – are the fridge-freezer 

and the washing machine.

we all look for machines that

but save us money, time and/

Our habits have changed over recent years with more people now 

entertaining at home. Because of this, they often need cooling appliances with a 

bigger capacity; but the reality is that many simply cannot fit a larger appliance 

into their living space. Ideally what people need is a refrigerator that can store 

more food but without taking up any more space in their kitchen. 

The fridge is the ideal appliance to use as a centrepiece in the modern 

kitchen, and there is a vast range of sizes, colours and finishes available in the 

market, allowing you to choose your dream design. For instance, a large American 

style side by side fridge freezer is a real aspirational product, and provides a 

feeling of premium luxury, while a coloured fridge can be a reflection of your 

personality, and also build upon your chosen design scheme. 

The fridge is the perfect product for creating a point of interest in a room, 

as it is large enough to carry off a striking appearance, and is a vital and muchused 

appliance. 

The way we shop has changed too, along with the way we store our food. It 

is now the norm to do one big weekly shop, and most of us do not have a larder

There has been a significant shift towards larger capacity washing machines, 

as people are changing their washing behaviour in order to save time and money. 

While demand for bigger capacity machines has risen, consumers can often 

be put off by the fact that bigger drum capacity usually means finding more space 

for a larger washing machine in the kitchen. 

As a result, washing machines that can offer consumers more space on the 

inside within a standard footprint are increasingly sought after. 

In response to this demand, Samsung developed the 12kg ecobubble machine 

which is a great example of a laundry appliance that maximises drum capacity 

while maintaining a standard size. 

The ecobubble washes clothes using 70% less energy than a 40°C wash 

programme, whilst the bubbles do the rest. These soap rich bubbles are able to 

penetrate deeper and dissolve faster into fabrics, which saves on energy used 

for heating water and is much gentler on clothes. In addition to the cold water 

washing benefits, this technology also boosts performance in warmer washing 

temperatures. 

Alongside the original 8kg and 7kg premium washers, the ecobubble range 

now includes a super capacity 12kg model, the largest wash capacity in Europe for a 

standard under-the-counter sized unit. 

In addition to ensure there is an ecobubble for everyone, entry level 7KG and 

8KG models are available. 

Samsung’s ecobubble washers all feature a ‘Bubble Generator’, which uses 

an initial water intake at the start of the wash cycle to create a concentrated 

detergent mix. It then injects air, producing a rich soapy foam cushion that appears 

in the drum seconds after the normal cycle. These special ‘ecobubbles’ soak into 

fabrics more quickly than by simply using detergent in water. 

Most of the detergent has already dissolved by the time the bubbles first 

reach the drum, and so it penetrates deeper into clothes up to 40 times faster than 

conventional washers in cold water. The process is even faster with warmer wash 

cycles. The Generator turns off in time to avoid bubbles during rinsing, and because 

the detergent is so well dissolved, there is also no soap residue or white marks on 

clothes at the end of the wash.

Hotpoint is claiming a world first for its 11kg, A+++ Aqualtis washing machine, 

which has more than 70 patents, incorporates an insulated Hydro Thermal Tech tub 

surrounding a titanium alloy drum. 

This, the company says, maintains a constant temperature for ‘High 

Definition’ cleaning results and longer lasting colours. The technology has been

used to develop three specialist programmes to keep colours strong, darks dark 

and whites bright. 

Special cycles, which are more delicate than hand washing, help reduce 

friction between fibres to keep garments looking beautiful for longer, even 

garments with special finishes like sequins and glitter. Aqualtis has been awarded 

Woolmark Platinum, the only washing machine with this level of care for woolens 

and delicates. The uniquely designed wave-shaped lifters inside the drum gently 

circulate your clothes throughout the wash for deep cleaning performance. 

Indesit says its new range of Eco washing machines are packed with a whole 

host of innovative energy and water saving features. There are 11 new Advance and 

Start models in a range of colours (white, silver and black) to suit every budget and 

lifestyle, the company says. 

The new A+ Indesit Advance and Start washing machines all feature a ‘20º 

Zone’ with three special programmes that give you all the cleaning power of a 40º 

wash but at a much lower temperature, so you’re not wasting electricity heating 

up water. 

It works by enhancing the drum agitation at the start of the cycle which 

improves the efficiency of low temperature detergents. At 20º, the fibres in your 

clothes are much more relaxed so stains are actually 

easier to remove.

temperature washing of cottons and synthetics, 

and include a ’20º Refresh’ programme to spruce

Buying tips – eco-cooling 

• Energy efficiency is now a key demand for any appliance: The fridge is a 

product that is on all the time, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so changing 

to a more efficient model can really make a difference to the amount of 

energy we use, and in turn lower our bills. 

• Electronic sensor technology is the key to energy efficiency: Electronically 

controlled appliances are much better at saving energy, which is why they 

generally all have very good ratings. 

• Energy labelling can be confusing: It is well worth taking your time when 

picking your refrigerator, and seeking help from the sales staff at your 

local retailer, as they will be able to explain the resource use of a particular

• Research well to ensure you get one that matches your personal needs: This 

will depend on what you tend to wash, and what programmes you tend to use. 

• Try to spend as much as you can afford: There are a number of poor quality

point, rather than good performance. These often use lots of energy and water 

and are frequently noisy. 

• Consider the number of people who live in your home: Calculate the capacity 

needed and choose accordingly. If there are only two of you, then it is unlikely 

that you will need as large a capacity as a family of five. 

The latest washing machines offer so much more than models of yesteryear, 

that it can get a bit confusing! However, there are some key features you should 

look for, and put on a checklist for ticking off before you buy: 

• Capacity: Think about what you use your washing machine for, and then 

decide how large a capacity you may need. Do you often wash bulky items 

such as towels or blankets, or are most of your loads too big for your current

FM is full and has reached the limit of its 

capabilities and like other media, radio needs to have 

a digital future to meet listeners’ expectations. Digital 

broadcasting is more efficient and we need to invest 

now in infrastructure for the future. 

Digital radio gives you the FM stations you’re used to, as well as a much 

wider choice of digital-only stations. It also offers easy tuning, hiss and cracklefree 

sound. 

On average, digital radio doubles the number of stations you can receive 

(compared with licensed AM/FM UK stations). National commercial digital radio 

is available to 90% of the UK population. BBC national services are available to 

93% of the UK population. 

You can listen to digital radio in a number of ways: DAB digital radio, online 

(on computers and mobile apps) and on TV.

In the world of consumer electronics, there are many baffling terms to describe product 

features and services. Here, At Home With Euronics explains some of the most common terms: 

A TV technology which displays pictures at a fast rate in order to reduce flicker. 

1080P 

Refers to resolution or sharpness of a full high definition (Full HD) display. 

2.1 CHAnnEL SOUnD 

A surround sound system which uses two stereo speakers and a sub-bass speaker 

to create surround-sound effects. These systems use fewer speakers than normal 

surround sound systems (which can have six or more), and so take up less space in 

the living room. 

24P 

A TV and video feature designed for movie buffs, which enables films recorded onto 

Blu-ray discs to be shown at the same frame rate they were shot. The system is 

designed to remove picture judder. To use the 24p feature, you need a Blu-ray disc 

player connected to TV that can accept a 24p signal. 

2D-TO-3D COnVERSIOn 

A system which converts ordinary 2D images into a 3D-like picture. 

3D TV 

A TV system that adds depth to the picture, producing amazing images that you 

almost feel you can touch. In order to watch 3DTV, you need a 3D TV television, a 3D 

source (which can be a special 3D television broadcast or a 3D Blu-ray disc played on 

a 3D-compatible Blu-ray player), and a pair of viewing glasses. There are two main 

types of 3DTV formats. Passive formats use low-cost viewing glasses with polarised 

filters, while active systems use glasses with built-in shutters that switch the image 

behind the left and right eye at a rapid speed, to give the 3D effect. 

ALLSHARE 

A system used by Samsung to share audio, video and pictures from different devices 

around the home, for example, watching videos stored on your home PC on the 

TV screen. 

AnynET+ 

A system used by many Samsung products that allows you to control different 

devices (such as a TV, Blu-ray player and home audio-video system) with a single 

remote control handset. 

APP 

A small program that adds new features or functions to a smart television. 

AUDIO DESCRIPTIOn 

A broadcast system designed for visually impaired television viewers. It uses a special 

audio soundtrack that describes what is happening on-screen. 

BBC iPLAyER 

A television catch-up service, which lets you watch programmes broadcast over the 

previous seven days. 

BLU-RAy 

A video format which stores high definition video and audio on a CD-sized disc. 

BD LIVE 

A Blu-ray system which allows users to download content linked to a Blu-ray disc title 

from the internet 

CATCH-UP TV 

Allows viewers to catch-up on TV programmes they missed during the week, by 

sending them on the internet. Catch-up programmes can be watched on a PC, TV or 

some smartphones. 

DIVX PLUS 

A video file format. Some DVD and Blu-ray players can play discs with DivX recordings. 

DOLBy DIGITAL 

A surround-sound audio system that comes in various forms. 

DLnA – DIGITAL LIVInG nETWORK ALLIAnCE 

An industry standard that makes it possible to share audio, video and pictures 

between different devices, like a TV and a PC. 

EPG – ELECTROnIC PROGRAmmE GUIDE 

An on-screen TV guide. 

An EPG is great for planning your viewing. Most EPGs provide programme information 

for at least seven days in advance. Many EPGs include a system for tagging 

programmes, so that just before the programmes starts, a reminder is flashed onscreen 

– a way of not missing a programme. 

FLICKR 

An online photo library for sharing pictures with friends and family. 

FREESAT 

A subscription-free digital TV service that offers more than 150 TV and radio channels. 

You need a satellite dish to receive Freesat. 

FREESAT HD 

A subscription-free service, it offers all the Freesat channels, plus five high definition 

TV channels and catch-up services like BBC iPlayer. 

FREEVIEW 

A subscription-free digital TV service which offers up to 50 TV channels and 24 radio 

stations, which are received through a TV aerial. 

FREEVIEW HD 

An upgraded Freeview service which includes four high definition channels. 

FULL HD 

Full high definition television. It offers the highest picture quality. 

GAmE mODE 

A feature found on some TV sets, which is designed to improve picture quality when 

playing video games. 

HDmI 

A special cable and 

connection designed for high 

definition video and high 

quality audio. 

HDTV 

High Definition TV gives crystal-clear pictures with up to five times more picture 

information than normal TV. 

HDTV is q huge leap forward for television picture quality and produces stunning 

images. In order to receive HDTV, you need several things: a TV set that can display HD 

pictures; an HD source, such as a HD set-top box (like Freesat HD, Freeview HD or Sky+ 

HD) or a Blu-ray player, and an HDMI cable to connect the HD box or Blu-ray player to 

the TV. 

HD UPSCALInG 

A feature that enables DVD players, Blu-ray players and personal video recorders to 

boost the picture quality of standard DVDs, so they look even clearer and sharper. 

IDTV 

Stands for integrated digital TV; a television with a built-in digital TV tuner. 

JPEG 

A digital photo file format used by most digital cameras. 

LCD TV 

Liquid Crystal Display TVs have a slim, flat screen composed of liquid crystals 

and a backlight. 

LED TV 

An LCD TV which uses a light emitting diode (LED) backlight. This is more energy 

efficient than the standard backlight used on normal LCD TVs. LED TVs can also be 

made super-slim. 

mPEG 

A digital video format. 

OPTICAL OUTPUT 

This transmits digital signals as pulses of light. 

PLASmA TV 

Plasma TVs have slim flat screens containing inert gases that glow when an electric 

charge is passed through them. 

PVR – PERSOnAL VIDEO RECORDER 

A PVR is a smart video recorder, instead of using tapes or discs, video recordings 

are stored on a large hard disk drive – some PVRs can store hundreds of hours of 

TV programmes. Most PVRs let you record two different channels at the same time; 

handy if two of your favourite programmes are being broadcast simultaneously. If 

a programme is delayed or postponed, a PVR can wait for the new transmission slot 

before recording. And while you’re recording two programmes, you can watch a third 

one stored on the PVR’s hard drive. 

There’s also no need to miss part of a programme when your TV viewing is 

interrupted, for example, when the phone rings. Just press the pause button and the 

programme is held at the same spot until you return. Meanwhile, the remainder of the 

programme is automatically recorded. There’s no need for you to remember to record 

each episode of your favourite series; a couple of button presses and the PVR will 

automatically record the entire series. 

QUICKSTART 

A feature found on some Blu-ray players, which reduces the time taken to start-up 

and play a disc. 

SD mEmORy CARD 

A postage stamp-sized memory card that can store audio, video and data, such as 

digital images. 

SKy 

Sky is the brand name for British Sky Broadcasting’s digital satellite television and 

radio service. Sky also offers telephone and broadband services. 

SKyPE 

A free online service that lets you make audio or video calls over the internet. 

SmART TV 

A Smart TV receives normal TV broadcasts, and can also connect you to the internet, 

your friends and family, as well as other devices around the home. Not all Smart TVs 

are the same, and you need expert advice to ensure that you get the set that suits 

your needs. 

STAnDARD DEFInITIOn

THX 

A standard for home AV equipment. If you’re a big home cinema fan, you should take
