Welcome to the
launch issue of
At Home With Euronics
Across the UK, there are 1,200 stores affiliated to the Euronics
buying group; our retailers operate more high street electrical
stores than any of our competitors.
Our retailers have been in business for many years and they
are the best place to go to find out about new products and technologies.
Our retailers will deliver and install products for you, and they care.
All stores are specialists in electrical and
electronic products. From Smart TVs to Blu-ray
players to state-of-the-art domestic appliances,
there’s a Euronics store near you offering the
latest products from the top brand names.
Unlike large, mass-market discount centres,
we take pride in the excellence of our customer
service and our extensive knowledge of our
high quality innovative products. The secret of
our success is that we take the time to know
our customers and our products, enabling us to
provide an unparalleled personalised service at
competitive prices.
More than ever today, and especially in the
areas of electronic equipment and domestic
appliances, consumers need reassurance
during the purchasing process. The increasing
complexity of high technology products,
combined with growing convergence of the TV,
music, computing and communications spaces,
presents significant challenges for consumers.
Euronics customers can rely on our advice
and assistance to ensure the connectivity and
compatibility of the products in which they are
interested.
Well-trained staff take the time to
understand each customer’s wishes and needs,
offering them suitable options and always the
very highest levels of service.
Our euronics.co.uk website is going from
strength-to-strength, while all our advertising,
including national TV advertising, points you
to our website, from where you can locate your
local Euronics retailer.
As a Euronics customer, you benefit from
both the service only a local store can provide
and the purchasing power of Europe’s largest
electrical buying group.
I hope you will find the launch issue of At
Home With Euronics interesting and useful. ■
Editor’s comment
When I want to buy a new electrical product, irrespective of
whether I’m looking for a new TV, or for a replacement washing
machine, I want to be served by a knowledgable salesman, who
knows the products inside out, and can offer me advice on which
model, or models, to consider.
The benefits of buying from a Euronics retailer are clear. As members of Europe’s
largest electrical buying group, Euronics retailers are able to offer competitively priced
products, backed up by great customer service, both at the time of purchase and post
purchase.
Products are getting more and more sophisticated; if you are buying a new TV or
washing machine after a number of years, they will have changed considerably since you
last purchased a product, so you will need the expert sales advice.
Euronics members are independent retailers, who are well established in their local
areas – Euronics brings them all together under one identity.
A lot is being made in the media about the ‘connected home’, where all products talk
to each other.
The variety of brands, and technologies that sometimes compete with each other
and at other times are designed to interconnect different devices, can make the set-up
and use of these products increasingly complex and confusing for consumers.
Euronics customers can rely on our advice and assistance to ensure the connectivity
and compatibility of the products in which they are interested. Well-trained employees
take the time to understand each customer’s wishes and needs, offering you suitable
options and always the very highest levels of service.
I hope you find this first issue of At Home With Euronics interesting and useful. ■
At Home With Euronics
With 29 member countries across Europe and 10,500 specialist
stores and branches, reaching 600 million consumers, every retailer in
each country is a specialist in the field of electrical goods.
From HD, LED or LCD TVs to Blu-ray players and digital radio, and from
home laundry to American-style refrigeration, Euronics retailers can offer
you the latest product ranges from top name brands at a very
competitive price.
Our philosophy in
two words: service
and price.
As you should expect from one of Europe’s largest consumer
electronics retailers, consumers find the very latest, most innovative and
popular products featuring state-of-the-art technologies in their local
Euronics store.
They can always be sure of finding the most innovative products at
Euronics, thanks to our close partnership with key players in the industry,
our national and international market strategies and exclusive models,
specifically developed for Euronics, with unique designs and technical
features not available elsewhere.
Euronics stores are all run by
independent electrical retailers, who as
members of Euronics, the largest electrical
buying group in Europe, join forces to create
heavyweight buying power.
Combined with our service level excellence and the unparalleled knowhow
of sales staff, our wide assortment of innovative products makes the
local Euronics store the place to go when looking for the latest in consumer
electronics and domestic appliances.
Euronics retailers are often family-run businesses, who take pride in their
customer service and product knowledge. They take the time to get to know
you and the product, so when you come into a Euronics store, you’re not
talking to someone who’s under pressure to reach targets. In reality, you’ll
probably be talking to the owner or family member, someone with serious
know-how in their field. So not only will they be giving you a brilliant price,
they’ll be able to provide you with advice you can really trust.
And it doesn’t stop there! Euronics retailers also focus on after sales service;
from delivery to installation, servicing and repairs, the Euronics experience
does not stop when you exit the shop. They care about their customers and
pride themselves on the attention they give to their customers after
the sale. ■
Hands off
Once considered a luxury item, the dishwasher is
becoming an everyday household fixture, but what’s
surprising is that only one in five of us are actually
choosing to have one installed in our homes.
One of the most common concerns about dishwashers is the energy and
water consumption that is required, but manufacturers are striving to make
huge advancements in minimising water and energy use to ensure that their
products are as efficient as possible.
This has seen the development and integration of electronic sensor
technology into the dishwasher – these sensors manage exactly the right amount
of water required for each and every wash and ensure that not a drop is wasted.
Dishwashers can save up to three weeks of time over the course of a year
and use just under 2% of a household’s daily water requirements compared to the
whopping 10% that is needed to do the washing up by hand.
Energy-wise, dishwashers are super efficient, using only 1.5kW rather than the
2.5kW required to fill a sink with hot water and manually wash up.
Manufacturers have focused on developing the internal capacity offerings of
their dishwashers, and the space available is now greatly increasing – this means
that you can wash more for less! The internal capacity of the latest dishwashers is
also often adjustable, with removable racks and flexible baskets ensuring you can
fit much more into a single load. Making the most of the flexible capacity offered by
the latest dishwashers enables you to clean all of your crockery and cookware at
once, yet still with low water consumption and great energy ratings.
Hotpoint has recently launched two new full size, freestanding Ultima
dishwashers that really raise the bar for energy and water efficiency – an A++
rated, 10 litre model (FDUD4212) incorporating a revolutionary patented new drying
process and the A+ rated FDUD4411 that uses only seven litres of water through a
clever system that recycles the last rinse water from the previous cycle.
Both appliances feature Hotpoint’s Flexipower motor which has an intelligent
sensor system to control temperature, duration, water pressure and number of
rinses for superior cleaning results that save energy every time.
Hotpoint’s new ‘Flexiload’ interior gives
increased flexibility in the way you use and fill the
internal space. There’s a third, removable tray in
the top basket for small and cutlery items, folding/
removable glass supports in the top tray and fully
folding plate racks in the bottom tray.
Indesit’s new A-rated Advance IDF145
dishwasher can easily handle up to 14 place settings
but uses just 12 litres of water.
It features a new direct water spray system that makes sure that each jet of
water has equal pressure to get into every corner of the dishwasher. Inside, the
internal baskets have been redesigned with new handles and thicker external cords
so you can tidy up the dishes from that late night dinner party in one go.
The Advance IDF145 has an LED interface and five programmes, including an
intensive 65º wash, a 35 minute rapid wash and ‘Time4You’, a unique programme
from Indesit guaranteeing exceptional washing performance in just over an hour.
Slovenian company Gorenje says that its dishwashers offer a host of benefits
to enable the best performance and results, with energy and water saving features.
Gorenje
Full-sized models such as the GV62224 use as little as 12 litres of water, and
have a time delay setting so the consumer can take advantage of less expensive
energy tariffs, and they offer internal flexibility that can be customised according
to a family’s needs.
Beko has received the Best Buy Award from Which? for two of its dishwasher
models, the fully automatic One Touch (DFN1000X) and the standard size integrated
model (DW686).
All Beko dishwashers feature top baskets that can be easily height adjusted,
even when fully loaded, to accommodate large pots and pans.
Beko says if you think your kitchen is too small to accommodate a
dishwasher, think again – manufacturers now offer a host of slimline models that
give all the results of a full size model, but in a smaller footprint.
The Beko DSFS1531 is a 45cm wide model that is AAA energy rated and can
accommodate 10 place settings.
The Beko A+ energy rated DSFN6830 10 litre dishwasher has 13 place settings
and operates at a whisper quiet 44dB. With fuel bills rising, Beko claims that this
Neff S51T69X2GB
model will help you keep a check on energy usage, so your dishwasher does not
become an expensive luxury.
Baumatic’s describes its BDWF670 60cm
electronic dishwasher as the ultimate home help
appliance, enabling you to save time as well as money.
Part of the new Baumatic 3D series of super
energy efficient freestanding and integrated
dishwashers, the BDWF670 has three adjustable, spacesaving
drawers that enable you to wash more dishes at
a time. As well as having two collapsible drawers, the
model comes with an additional third slide out cutlery
drawer, which maximises storage space and enables
Baumatic’s BDWF670SL
you to lay out cutlery more safely.
Dishwashers use
just under 2% of a
household’s daily
water requirements
AT HOME WITH EUrONICS
Offering a generous 14 place setting capacity, Baumatic says the BDWF670 is
ideal for even the busiest of households.
Korean manufacturer LG points out that its range of
dishwashers not only achieve A++ energy class, they can
wash more at once with a massive 14 place setting capacity.
This is all thanks to LG’s Inverter Direct Drive
technology now being applied in its dishwashers, and at
just 38dB, LG’s TrueSteam dishwasher range eases noise
pollution!
LG’s TrueSteam Dishwashers have been awarded
the QuietMark seal of approval thanks to their ultra quiet
performance together with the Waterwise Marque in
recognition their low water consumption.
if you washed-up the same load by hand, the company says.
• The SMI53E05GB with an energy rating of A++ also leads the way on energy
consumption too, using as little as 0.92kWh on a standard 50˚C Eco
• The A++ energy rating, low water consumption of 10 litres and A class washing
and drying, mean you can save energy with no compromise on performance,
Neff says.
• Siemens’ semi-integrated dishwasher SN56T592GB features the manufacturer’s
award-winning Zeolith drying technology makes possible astonishing new
levels of energy efficiency (A+++) and consumes as little as 0.82kWh per cycle.
of water less per load, than washing up by hand. The range of sophisticated
Buying tips – BOX-OUT
• Look at the capacity on offer: Larger capacities are becoming increasingly
commonplace, and these are beneficial as they allow you to wash more
dishes at once, saving time and energy. However, it is also important that the
capacity is flexible – are the baskets removable or height adjustable so you
can fit in larger, more awkward items?
• If you are short on space: Don’t assume that you can’t have a dishwasher. For
this reason, manufacturers are spending much more time developing slimline
and compact models, and they are well worth considering for the petite
kitchen.
• Energy and resource efficiency is vital: Be sure to look for this in any
dishwasher you choose. Aim for an ‘A’ energy rating as this will offer real value
for money and ensure no water or energy is wasted.
• Look for a variety of programmes: These will allow you to customise the cycle
according to your needs at the time.
• Don’t forget design either: There is no reason why you should have to
compromise on style when choosing an energy efficient, flexible dishwasher.
Manufacturers are spending much more time on the appearance of their
dishwashers to ensure that they are the best they can be, so whether you
want an integrated or free-standing model there is sure to be one to meet
your tastes. ■
Although space may be limited, you don’t need to compromise
on functionality as all the best features are available in a smaller
Compact appliances are becoming big news in the kitchen industry,
not only offering a space-saving solution for the growing number of
studios, apartments and townhouses, but also a compatible design for the
many new builds and open-plan kitchens that are now being created.
According to Royal Institute of British Architects, new buildings are
becoming smaller and smaller, the average new property totalling 76
square metres compared to the 86 sqaure metres of older UK homes.
With such limited space available, the number of galley and openplan
kitchens is growing fast, their designs demanding a smaller range of
appliances that can double up to serve multiple purposes.
Combi compact appliances are designed to offer a two-in-one
appliance, providing a value for money alternative to purchasing standard
size appliances. No longer limited in functionality,
are somewhat different, they
are unquestionably linked, as
we all look for machines that
not only make lives easier,
but save us money, time and/
or energy.
Our habits have changed over recent years with more people now
entertaining at home. Because of this, they often need cooling appliances with a
bigger capacity; but the reality is that many simply cannot fit a larger appliance
into their living space. Ideally what people need is a refrigerator that can store
more food but without taking up any more space in their kitchen.
The fridge is the ideal appliance to use as a centrepiece in the modern
kitchen, and there is a vast range of sizes, colours and finishes available in the
market, allowing you to choose your dream design. For instance, a large American
style side by side fridge freezer is a real aspirational product, and provides a
feeling of premium luxury, while a coloured fridge can be a reflection of your
personality, and also build upon your chosen design scheme.
The fridge is the perfect product for creating a point of interest in a room,
as it is large enough to carry off a striking appearance, and is a vital and muchused
appliance.
The way we shop has changed too, along with the way we store our food. It
is now the norm to do one big weekly shop, and most of us do not have a larder
or pantry to store our produce in. For this reason, we need a fridge with a large
capacity, to hold all our purchases and keep them fresh. A large freezer is also
important, with space for bulk buying items that are on offer and then freezing
them for a later date.
While a large capacity is vital, the size of the kitchen remains an issue for
many and for this reason a combi fridge freezer continues to be the most popular
option, as it fits in the standard footprint available in many kitchens for a fridge
freezer. It also offers ample storage space for both frozen and fresh items, while
Baumatic SBS
the latest models feature a variety of finishes and colours, to allow the buyer to
experiment more with design. We are increasingly asking for better storage options in our refrigeration
products, such as having different compartments for different foodstuffs such as
fruit, vegetables, fish and dairy products, and special drawers to help keep food
fresher for longer. Multi-door cooling products as well as features such as foldable
shelving are great as they enable different storage options depending on what
products customers need to fit in their fridge. Some models include foldable,
flip-up and slide-out shelving providing the option of storing, for example, several
standing bottles in preparation for a party.
In the UK, we waste on average, a third of the food we buy each week,
equivalent to a staggering £12 billion a year on food. With 25% of landfill being food
waste, the refrigeration appliance is no longer just a fridge freezer.
German premium refrigeration company Liebherr says the amount of
food wastage can be reduced with its zero degree cooling – BioFresh and now
BioFreshPlus compartments.
The fridge
is the ideal
appliance to use
as a centrepiece
in a room
As not all types of food need the same temperature and humidity
conditions, Liebherr has come up with the additional temperature zone,
‘BioFresh’, where many types of food can be kept fresh for up to three times
longer than in a traditional refrigerator compartment. This requires keeping
the temperature accurately at 0°C combined with the ideal humidity conditions
for food to retain its healthy properties, delicate flavours and an appetising
appearance for up to three times longer than in a conventional fridge.
The HydroSafe stores fruit and vegetables at a temperature and humidity
ideal for keeping the skins and leaves nourished, whilst DrySafe also offers
humidity and temperature controls for meat, fish and dairy products that need
drier air to discourage mould. Purchasing an appliance with zero degree cooling
is a must have feature - great for the family budget, a healthy diet and it also
ensures you’re doing a bit for the planet.
Samsung’s G-Series refrigeration range incorporates ecospace
technology, which provides more inner space whilst keeping the same
dimensions on the outside – so you can benefit from smart technology without
having to find extra space in your kitchen, as well as store more food, shop less
often and organise your groceries more easily.
As well as the original side-by-side G-Series, there is also a stunning three
door model for you to enjoy which takes its inspiration from across the Atlantic
with its American-styled design.
Because of the way it’s designed, you can use the full width of the unit for
the fridge and freezer, something you can’t do with a traditional American style
side-by-side.
The Twin Cooling Plus system means the fridge and freezer compartments
are also controlled separately. No air moves from one to the other, so the fridge
maintains the right humidity to keep vegetables fresh, while the freezer is kept dry
and odour free. With an anti fingerprint real stainless steel finish, you also won’t
have to worry about cleaning hand prints up.
Hotpoint says that as we manage our food shopping in one weekly trip to
the supermarket, or even through internet shopping, we are looking for cooling
appliances that have a variety of flexible storage solutions, with maximum capacity
that keeps more food fresher for longer.
In developing its new cooling range, Hotpoint says it has looked carefully at
what customers want and has recognised an increased focus on food hygiene and
the amount of food we throw away.
Gorenje
Samsung 3-Door G-Series
Hotpoint’s Ultima combis use ‘Air Tech Evolution’ to keep food fresher for
longer. This new technology combines with a full width chiller and salad bins to
keep fresh food in ‘High Definition’ tip top condition.
With today’s hectic lifestyles, Indesit acknowledges that we are looking for as
much internal storage space as possible to accommodate the weekly shop.
Indesit’s 60cm total no frost (BIA134F) combi features state-of-the-art
‘Dynamic Air Control’ technology that pushes cool air into the fridge at the back
of the appliance and, combined with a thinner back liner, provides a whopping 20
litres of extra internal storage space.
With a 184 litre fridge and an 88 litre freezer, this A energy rated appliance
appeals to those of us who like to cram our fridges full following the weekly trip to
the supermarket.
Slovenian company Gorenje acknowledges that multi-zone cooling with the
flexibility to customise your fridge space and storage conditions is highly desirable.
On selected models, Gorenje offers five temperature areas prolonging the
freshness and quality of food for longer. Sensor controlled zero degree drawer
zones extend food storage, preserving fruit, vegetables, meat, deli and
dairy products.
Technology can not only deliver tangible physical benefits in cooling
appliances but also deliver money savings too. This means that appliances with
good energy ratings are becoming highly sought after, with ‘A+’ and ‘A++’ rated
refrigerators widely available, as people look for an appliance that will help their
pockets in the long-term. Electronics also control and finely tune the temperature
to maintain humidity and ensure food stays fresher for longer.
Korean company LG has redesigned the compressor and engineered one with
fewer parts to make the Linear Compressor more energy efficient, extremely quiet,
optimise freshness and ultimately make for a more durable appliance to boot!
Most recently, LG launched its A+++ fridge-freezer thanks to linear
compressor technology, achieving the best possible energy class.
For the ultimate in both eco and design LG’s top of the range GS9366AEAV
Side-by-Side has it all.
With LG’s linear compressor, this American-style Side-by-Side with water and
ice Dispenser comes with LG’s ‘Smart Eco Door’ – this is a door within the main door
of the refrigerator.
By storing regularly used items with the ‘Smart Eco Door’, you will not open
the main door as often, meaning without so much cold air escaping – the fridge
will have to work less hard to keep the temperature constant. As well as this clever
feature, the side-by-side has a massive 614 litres of useable storage and achieves
an ‘A+’ energy class.
New from Baumatic is the TITAN5.5, an A+-rated 623 litre frost-free Americanstyle
fridge/freezer which offers a space-saving four compartment door design that
ensures that only the compartment required is opened and exposed to
room temperature.
The model also comes with an energy-saving adjustable thermostat and a
fast cool and freeze switch to speed up cooling and freezing.
Offering a Baumi-Fresh Drawer and a Baumi-Dry Drawer, the model helps to
preserve the nutritional and vitamin value of fresh produce and dry foods, so that
they can be stored for longer, using only the exact amount of energy required.
Features like temperature and open door warning indicators also work to prevent
any waste of energy. ■
In the washing market, we are moving towards
making investment purchases – products that may
cost more initially, but in the long term, not only last
longer and are more reliable, but also offer savings
over the life of the product.
Increasingly, consumers are moving towards investment purchases – looking
for products that may cost more initially, but in the long term, not only last longer
and are more reliable, but also offer savings over the life of the product.
There has been a significant shift towards larger capacity washing machines,
as people are changing their washing behaviour in order to save time and money.
While demand for bigger capacity machines has risen, consumers can often
be put off by the fact that bigger drum capacity usually means finding more space
for a larger washing machine in the kitchen.
As a result, washing machines that can offer consumers more space on the
inside within a standard footprint are increasingly sought after.
In response to this demand, Samsung developed the 12kg ecobubble machine
which is a great example of a laundry appliance that maximises drum capacity
while maintaining a standard size.
The ecobubble washes clothes using 70% less energy than a 40°C wash
programme, whilst the bubbles do the rest. These soap rich bubbles are able to
penetrate deeper and dissolve faster into fabrics, which saves on energy used
for heating water and is much gentler on clothes. In addition to the cold water
washing benefits, this technology also boosts performance in warmer washing
temperatures.
Alongside the original 8kg and 7kg premium washers, the ecobubble range
now includes a super capacity 12kg model, the largest wash capacity in Europe for a
standard under-the-counter sized unit.
In addition to ensure there is an ecobubble for everyone, entry level 7KG and
8KG models are available.
Samsung’s ecobubble washers all feature a ‘Bubble Generator’, which uses
an initial water intake at the start of the wash cycle to create a concentrated
detergent mix. It then injects air, producing a rich soapy foam cushion that appears
in the drum seconds after the normal cycle. These special ‘ecobubbles’ soak into
fabrics more quickly than by simply using detergent in water.
Most of the detergent has already dissolved by the time the bubbles first
reach the drum, and so it penetrates deeper into clothes up to 40 times faster than
conventional washers in cold water. The process is even faster with warmer wash
cycles. The Generator turns off in time to avoid bubbles during rinsing, and because
the detergent is so well dissolved, there is also no soap residue or white marks on
clothes at the end of the wash.
Samsung ecobubble WF1124XAC
Hotpoint is claiming a world first for its 11kg, A+++ Aqualtis washing machine,
which has more than 70 patents, incorporates an insulated Hydro Thermal Tech tub
surrounding a titanium alloy drum.
This, the company says, maintains a constant temperature for ‘High
Definition’ cleaning results and longer lasting colours. The technology has been
Hotpoint Aqualtis Lifestyle
AT HOME WITH EUrONICS
used to develop three specialist programmes to keep colours strong, darks dark
and whites bright.
Special cycles, which are more delicate than hand washing, help reduce
friction between fibres to keep garments looking beautiful for longer, even
garments with special finishes like sequins and glitter. Aqualtis has been awarded
Woolmark Platinum, the only washing machine with this level of care for woolens
and delicates. The uniquely designed wave-shaped lifters inside the drum gently
circulate your clothes throughout the wash for deep cleaning performance.
Indesit says its new range of Eco washing machines are packed with a whole
host of innovative energy and water saving features. There are 11 new Advance and
Start models in a range of colours (white, silver and black) to suit every budget and
lifestyle, the company says.
The new A+ Indesit Advance and Start washing machines all feature a ‘20º
Zone’ with three special programmes that give you all the cleaning power of a 40º
wash but at a much lower temperature, so you’re not wasting electricity heating
up water.
It works by enhancing the drum agitation at the start of the cycle which
improves the efficiency of low temperature detergents. At 20º, the fibres in your
clothes are much more relaxed so stains are actually
easier to remove.
The three programmes are perfect for low
temperature washing of cottons and synthetics,
and include a ’20º Refresh’ programme to spruce
up lightly soiled clothes.
With ActiveWater consumption, the Winning
Line machine (WAQ283S0GB) from Bosch will only
use the exact amount of water required for the
load. With an energy efficiency class of A+++,
the appliance takes up to 8kg of washing and
uses roughly 8,700 litres per year (based on 220
standard wash cycles).
The cooling and laundry markets are massive, so to have a look at the wide
range of products available, head to your local Euronics store.
Buying tips – eco-cooling
• Energy efficiency is now a key demand for any appliance: The fridge is a
product that is on all the time, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so changing
to a more efficient model can really make a difference to the amount of
energy we use, and in turn lower our bills.
• Electronic sensor technology is the key to energy efficiency: Electronically
controlled appliances are much better at saving energy, which is why they
generally all have very good ratings.
• Energy labelling can be confusing: It is well worth taking your time when
picking your refrigerator, and seeking help from the sales staff at your
local retailer, as they will be able to explain the resource use of a particular
product. Put simply, the closer to the beginning of the alphabet a rating is,
the better. So, look for a product that offers an ‘A’ energy rating if possible.
However, once you reach the start of the alphabet, things can get a little
complicated, which is why it is important to ask for advice – fridge freezers
that offer a better energy rating than ‘A’ will feature a ‘+’ symbol (or symbols
after the ‘A’ – a bit like getting an a ‘A+’ at school! Every ‘+’ represents an
improvement on the previous energy class.
Buying tips – eco-washing
• Research well to ensure you get one that matches your personal needs: This
will depend on what you tend to wash, and what programmes you tend to use.
• Try to spend as much as you can afford: There are a number of poor quality
washing machines on the market with the primary aim to reach a low price
point, rather than good performance. These often use lots of energy and water
and are frequently noisy.
• Consider the number of people who live in your home: Calculate the capacity
needed and choose accordingly. If there are only two of you, then it is unlikely
that you will need as large a capacity as a family of five.
The latest washing machines offer so much more than models of yesteryear,
that it can get a bit confusing! However, there are some key features you should
look for, and put on a checklist for ticking off before you buy:
• Capacity: Think about what you use your washing machine for, and then
decide how large a capacity you may need. Do you often wash bulky items
such as towels or blankets, or are most of your loads too big for your current
machine, so you have to do more than one wash? If this is the case, look for a
larger capacity than your current model – perhaps up to a very spacious 8kg.
• Programmes: What programmes do you actually use? There is no point paying
for a more expensive machine with lots of programmes, if you only ever use a
favoured few. Make a note of the ones you use the most and look for these in
your chosen model. ■
Support
Often during the consideration of
research shows that while 90% of us aspire to having
our flat screen televisions mounted on the wall, in reality
only 18% of us actually achieve that wish.
Put another way it means that we’re not taking
advantage of the great space saving benefits offered by
wall mounting a flat panel television. Wall mounting a TV is
a much safer option for homes where there are
young children.
your TV you will need to consider
how the TV will be shown in the room.
Many modern buildings are no longer
constructed in brick internally and so
if you are choosing a TV mount it is
important you choose a unit that can
be fitted to the wall you have.
The good news is that most new TVs are less heavy
than a few years ago and an number of manufacturers
have launched exciting new aimed at the latest and lighter
TVs. Gone are the days when the big bulky CrT sets
demanded to be centre of attention.
And you can achieve such a look with the new
‘virtually invisible’ award-winning THIN Series from Vogel’s,
the number one TV bracket brand in Europe.
to make your flat screen TV look fantastic, while staying
securely in place. Whether you want to tilt it, turn it,
control it from your chair or just enjoy the view, everything
is possible.
Each LED TV mount from the THIN series is an ultra
thin mounting solution that offers easy access to cables
at the back of the screen too. It also allows plenty of air
circulation to keep the TV cool. And because Vogel’s have
such confidence in the quality of their product, it comes
with a life-long guarantee.
Specially designed to make your flat screen TV look
fantastic and with just 3.5cm of space between the wall
and the TV, the 345 mount is virtually invisible to the eye.
It can be turned 90 degrees to the right and left and tilted
20 degrees for the best viewing position.
And you don’t have to worry about having a spaghetti
junction in your living room as the Cable Inlay System
discreetly conceals cables out of sight.
Peerless-AV has launched a new range called SlimLine
which features everything from a basic Super Slim flat to
wall mount which sits only 8mm from the wall, to a full
motion motorised mount which comes out and turns the
TV towards you by remote control.
Should you decide that wall mounting is not an
option for you, then the growth and choice in AV furniture
nowadays is huge.
What is
Digital Radio?
FM is full and has reached the limit of its
capabilities and like other media, radio needs to have
a digital future to meet listeners’ expectations. Digital
broadcasting is more efficient and we need to invest
now in infrastructure for the future.
Digital radio gives you the FM stations you’re used to, as well as a much
wider choice of digital-only stations. It also offers easy tuning, hiss and cracklefree
sound.
On average, digital radio doubles the number of stations you can receive
(compared with licensed AM/FM UK stations). National commercial digital radio
is available to 90% of the UK population. BBC national services are available to
93% of the UK population.
You can listen to digital radio in a number of ways: DAB digital radio, online
(on computers and mobile apps) and on TV.
The benefits of Digital Radio are:
Hiss and crackle-free sound;
Easy to tune: find the station you want by name, not number;
Track and artist listings: digital radios display on-screen information,
so you can find out what’s playing;
Pause and rewind: some digital radios offer pause and rewind so you
don’t have to miss a thing;
Record programmes: some digital radios let you record your
favourite programmes;
Plan your listening: an Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) on some
digital radios lets you plan your listening up to seven days in advance.
The coalition Government has committed to a digital future for radio
and the Digital Economy Act 2010 gives the Secretary of State the flexibility to
set a date for a radio switchover.
There’s a superb selection of national, regional and local stations
available on DAB radio. Some are old favourites broadcasting in great digital
quality. Others are brand new digital only stations. In order for you to be able
to receive new stations that have come on air in your area, it is recommended
that you re-tune your digital radio from time to time.
From jazz to classic rock, classical to hip-hop and speech to chill-out
music, there’s a station to suit every taste.
The reception you get depends on the coverage in your area. If you’re in
a ‘fringe’ area, you will probably benefit from a roof-mounted aerial to boost
reception. Stations also vary from region to region, so if you take your DAB
radio from one part of the country to another, you’ll need to ‘auto-tune’ it to
pick up the stations that are available locally.
For a comprehensive list of DAB radio stations, log on to
www.getdigitalradio.co.uk but please remember not all the
stations will be available where you live. To find out what stations
are receivable in your area use the website’s postcode checker. ■
Radio Ga Ga
As the dust settles on the digital TV switchover, attention is being drawn to
radio and the on-going question of “will it, won’t it”. The Government has made a
commitment to provide the answer during the final quarter of 2013.
In the meantime, Roberts continues to offer
consumers both the analogue and digital choice they
rightly demand. But before buying their next radio
product, Roberts wants to ensure that people are well
aware what will ‘potentially’ happen to the future of
radio in the UK. For those wanting a radio that offers
the fullest versatility, it is prudent to choose a radio
that also offers the benefit of DAB making the radio
‘future-proof’.
Roberts Vintage
Roberts RecordR Lifestyle
Pure Move 2500 Lifestyle
Pure says that as the road to digital radio
switchover builds momentum, analogue-only radios
are no longer future proof and consumers should look
to purchase either a combined digital and FM radio or
an internet-connected digital radio with FM.”
One of the major benefits of DAB is the
vast number of additional radio stations that are
exclusively broadcast via DAB only.
Radio fans are missing out on an enhanced
listening experience if they do not upgrade to a DAB
radio. If, on the other hand, a bedside clock radio is
merely used to wake in the morning (and promptly
switched off to avoid waking your partner), there will
forever be a range of local radio stations that will
continue to exist on the FM frequency beyond any
switch to digital and with functional analogue clock
radios costing around £20 – analogue clock radios are
still desirable for the bedroom.
Neff and Pure team-up
The UK’s number 1 built in home appliance
manufacturer Neff, and Pure have banded together to
bring customers a groovy promotional incentive. Until
November 30, customers who purchase any Neff oven
with Slide&Hide door will receive a free Pure Evoke
Mio DAB radio.
The Pure Evoke Mio DAB radio’s come in four
colours for this promotion and customers can choose
from noir, cherry, pepper and teal. Finished in a two
tone leather effect finish and matching cream fascia
these radios will give owners of new Neff Slide&Hide
ovens something to sing about.
Roberts Dreamclock
The ideal kitchen companion the Mio delivers
rich, balanced audio and is packed with handy
features such as a kitchen timer and an input for MP3
player.
Neff Slide&Hide ovens feature a unique door
design that won’t get in the way. It retracts and slides
neatly under the oven to give uninhibited access to
the oven for cleaning or removing hot items. With
Neff’s circotherm technology, heat loss in no problem
as even heat distribution and temperature control is a
key feature of all Neff ovens.
Pure Evoke Mio
Neff customers are renowned for their
discernment in terms of design and reliability, and
that’s what makes this collaboration such a great
match – the style and quality of the unique Evoke
Mio perfectly complementing the style and quality of
Neff ovens.
Plus, of course, digital radio is the perfect
kitchen companion. It offers a great choice of radio
stations to listen to while cooking, with something
to suit every mood from drama and conversation, to
classical music, rock or the latest hits, and with the
Evoke Mio having a kitchen timer it’s practical too! ■
The launch of 3D TV in
For many new TVs this means access to a collection of content, but the leading movie studios and broadcasters
A recent survey found that while almost two thirds
To do all this, the TV has to be able
Some smart TVs have wi-fi built-in,
LG says it is an exciting time for consumers with a
rapidly increasing amount of 3D content and Smart TV
applications available.
The Korean company
has been at the forefront
recently its bespoke Cinema
what it claims is the most
3D experience at home.
The company says that
the quality of glasses-free
3D on larger TV screens,
which are aimed at a shared
viewing experience, does not
equal the quality offered in
current ranges.
Until this technology
meets or exceeds the
current offering, LG says its
primary focus remains on its
award-winning Cinema 3D
technology.
Technology explained
46
100Hz DISPLAy
In the world of consumer electronics, there are many baffling terms to describe product
features and services. Here, At Home With Euronics explains some of the most common terms:
A TV technology which displays pictures at a fast rate in order to reduce flicker.
1080P
Refers to resolution or sharpness of a full high definition (Full HD) display.
2.1 CHAnnEL SOUnD
A surround sound system which uses two stereo speakers and a sub-bass speaker
to create surround-sound effects. These systems use fewer speakers than normal
surround sound systems (which can have six or more), and so take up less space in
the living room.
24P
A TV and video feature designed for movie buffs, which enables films recorded onto
Blu-ray discs to be shown at the same frame rate they were shot. The system is
designed to remove picture judder. To use the 24p feature, you need a Blu-ray disc
player connected to TV that can accept a 24p signal.
2D-TO-3D COnVERSIOn
A system which converts ordinary 2D images into a 3D-like picture.
3D TV
A TV system that adds depth to the picture, producing amazing images that you
almost feel you can touch. In order to watch 3DTV, you need a 3D TV television, a 3D
source (which can be a special 3D television broadcast or a 3D Blu-ray disc played on
a 3D-compatible Blu-ray player), and a pair of viewing glasses. There are two main
types of 3DTV formats. Passive formats use low-cost viewing glasses with polarised
filters, while active systems use glasses with built-in shutters that switch the image
behind the left and right eye at a rapid speed, to give the 3D effect.
ALLSHARE
A system used by Samsung to share audio, video and pictures from different devices
around the home, for example, watching videos stored on your home PC on the
TV screen.
AnynET+
A system used by many Samsung products that allows you to control different
devices (such as a TV, Blu-ray player and home audio-video system) with a single
remote control handset.
APP
A small program that adds new features or functions to a smart television.
AUDIO DESCRIPTIOn
A broadcast system designed for visually impaired television viewers. It uses a special
audio soundtrack that describes what is happening on-screen.
BBC iPLAyER
A television catch-up service, which lets you watch programmes broadcast over the
BD LIVE
A Blu-ray system which allows users to download content linked to a Blu-ray disc title
from the internet
CATCH-UP TV
Allows viewers to catch-up on TV programmes they missed during the week, by
sending them on the internet. Catch-up programmes can be watched on a PC, TV or
some smartphones.
DIVX PLUS
A video file format. Some DVD and Blu-ray players can play discs with DivX recordings.
DOLBy DIGITAL
A surround-sound audio system that comes in various forms.
DLnA – DIGITAL LIVInG nETWORK ALLIAnCE
An industry standard that makes it possible to share audio, video and pictures
between different devices, like a TV and a PC.
EPG – ELECTROnIC PROGRAmmE GUIDE
An on-screen TV guide.
An EPG is great for planning your viewing. Most EPGs provide programme information
are stored on a large hard disk drive – some PVRs can store hundreds of hours of
TV programmes. Most PVRs let you record two different channels at the same time;
handy if two of your favourite programmes are being broadcast simultaneously. If
a programme is delayed or postponed, a PVR can wait for the new transmission slot
before recording. And while you’re recording two programmes, you can watch a third
one stored on the PVR’s hard drive.
There’s also no need to miss part of a programme when your TV viewing is
interrupted, for example, when the phone rings. Just press the pause button and the
programme is held at the same spot until you return. Meanwhile, the remainder of the
programme is automatically recorded. There’s no need for you to remember to record
each episode of your favourite series; a couple of button presses and the PVR will
automatically record the entire series.
