Dean’s Message
Aloha
Dean Emeritus Chuck Gee, Ambassador Bill Lane, PATA
President Peter de Jong, Dean Walter Jamieson
I first wish to sincerely
thank everyone who participated
in the TIM Night
event and in the donor
recognition evening on the
following day. These were
truly splendid events.
As many of you are aware,
not only were we celebrating
our 40th anniversary,
we also combined both the
traditional TIM Night and
the Legacy in Tourism evening
into one event. The
students were responsible
for the design of the program
and held important
leadership positions in all
areas of the planning and
management of the event.
This was done within the
context of a course very
ably led by Lee-Ann Choy.
Sincere congratulations to
all of the students for their
incredible work. Special
thanks to Lee-Ann for her
leadership and dedication.
We obviously are indebted
to all of the companies and
individuals who bought
tables and contributed
gifts for the silent auction.
The proceeds will be used
to help augment the
school's resources in the
areas of scholarships, and
in continuing to upgrade
the infrastructure of the
school. Without this kind
of community support it
would be very difficult for
us to provide a positive
and enriched student experience,
which in turn
benefits the industry.
We were privileged to have
many people who traveled
some distance to be part of
our anniversary. We were
honored that Peter de
Jong, President and CEO
of the Pacific Asia Travel
Association, was able to be
present at a number of
events in Hawaii. Mahalo
Peter, for spending a week
with us. And mahalo to
the Marriott International
for providing Peter with
his accommodation.
We were all very excited
about the presence of Ambassador
Bill Lane who
attended all of our events
over the week. As somebody
who has played a
very important role in
various aspects of our
school his presence was
PATA Awarded Lifetime Service Award
The TIM School
has been fortunate
to have
had many
strong supporters
throughout
its 40-year history.
A number
of individuals
and organizations
have been
responsible for
its establishment
and continued
success. It is
only with this support
that the School has been
able to evolve into one of
the leaders in the industry.
Many of these individuals
and organizations
have been recognized in
the past.
In this important anniversary
year we were happy
to recognize the lifetime
contributions of the Pacific
Asia Travel Association
(PATA). Not only
most welcome. We were
humbled by his very generous
donation that he
announced at the donor
recognition night on October
24.
We were very happy to see
a strong contingent from
the University of Hawaii
system including the President,
the Chancellor of the
Manoa campus, vice presidents,
chancellors of other
campuses and colleagues.
We very much look forward
to the opportunity of
working together with all
of them over the coming
years, especially if the University
of Hawaii Hospitality
and Tourism Institute
that has been recommended
for funding by the
Board of Regents is supported
by the legislature.
Many thanks to all of the
alumni who actively solicited
gifts for the silent auction.
With best regards,
Walter
was the organization important
to the founding of
the School but it has continued
to support the
School in many ways,
most recently in providing
scholarships for the
EDIT certificate program.
We look forward to our
continued partnership
with PATA here in Hawaii
as well as in the Asia-
Pacific region. Congratulations
PATA!

ence. I will take with me more
than memories, but actual management
and leadership skills
that will help me in the real
world.
Learning to manage my time,
work with my peers, and working
with industry professionals
on an event of this scope, gives
me invaluable experience that I
could not have learned strictly in
a classroom setting. I have
gained new perspective that only
comes from investing numerous
hours and labor to make this
event a success.
Working so closely with my classmates
has enriched my learning experience. I
P A G E 3
take with me memories of long evenings
spent in the student Club room,
my classmates and I walking down the
halls of George Hall with our iPod earphones
blasting “To Brazil” as we practiced
our showstopper, dressing up as
Julius Caesar…. We have created
friendships that we will continue long
past our time here at the TIM School.
As a senior, I regret that we didn’t have
more time to get to know each other
sooner.
I have also learned that despite all of
the hard work planning an event entails,
I have found that this is what I
truly enjoy doing and hope to make a
career of someday.
