What is wood for good?
Kingsmead Primary School, Cheshire, White Design, The Wood Awards.

wood for good is the UK’s
wood promotion campaign.
We aim to make wood the number one building material, because:
Wood is beautiful
Wood is light and strong
Wood is uniquely sustainable...
How do we work?
The campaign started in 2000.
Core funding is provided by the Swedish Forest Industries Federation, the UK
Forestry Commission, ConFor (the Confederation of Forest Industries) and the
Northern Ireland Forest Service. An increasing proportion of funds now comes
from our growing representation of UK funding members.
What do we do?
Our programme consists of a number of Core Activities as well as Co-operative
Projects, where we work jointly with member organizations.
Core Activities include press relations, advertising, CPD seminars and Online
Learning, publications, a regularly updated website and exhibitions.
Wood is uniquely sustainable.
Wood grows in forests, providing a habitat for wildlife and a leisure resource.
Growing forests absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and produce the
oxygen we breathe. They provide a ‘carbon sink’, absorbing increasing amounts
of CO 2 and helping to mitigate climate change.
Europe’s forests are growing annually by an area the size of Cyprus – over 100
football pitches an hour. 1
Over 90% of the wood we use comes from Europe’s forests. 2
up to the minute information on issues such as climate change,
BREEAM and the Code for Sustainable Homes. More than 20
publications are available to download, including:
Wide-span wood sports structures. Technical information and
case studies produced in partnership with TRADA
Building sustainably with timber. 19 case studies covering
educational, residential & public buildings
Using wood can help
mitigate Climate Change.
To harness wood’s ability to mitigate
climate change most effectively:
• Harvest mature trees before they stop
sequestering CO2, die and rot
• Replace them with yet more trees, increasing
the forests’ carbon sink
• Extend the life of the wood product to
keep the CO2 locked up
• Re-use, recycle and eventually dispose of as
a biomass energy source.
Using wood saves CO2.
On average trees absorb 0.9 tonnes CO2 for
every cubic metre’s growth.
A cubic metre of sawn wood contains roughly 0.8 tonnes CO2. Other materials require energy to produce and are responsible
for about 1.1 tonnes CO2 per cubic metre. 3
Combining the CO 2 stored in the wood with the amount
saved by not using an alternative material means you save
almost 2 tonnes CO 2 for every cubic metre of wood chosen
instead of another material.
