A single discharge pipe works to remove effluent from <strong>the</strong> microscreen drum filter<br />

vacuum head and discharges <strong>the</strong> waste into <strong>the</strong> sewer system. The fresh water supply<br />

line is used for water replacement.<br />

The pilot-scale project includes four Low Head Recirculating Aquaculture Systems<br />

(LHRAS). Each system consists of two grow-out tanks and one filtration vessel (See<br />

Figure 1 LHRAS). Water flows from each grow-out tank through an 8 inch diameter<br />

PVC pipe into <strong>the</strong> first section of <strong>the</strong> filtration vessel. The first section of <strong>the</strong> filtration<br />

vessel contains a 120 micron microscreen drumfilter. The microscreen drumfilter<br />

removes solid waste (i.e: feces and uneaten feed) from <strong>the</strong> system water. The waste<br />

material collected by <strong>the</strong> microscreen drumfilter is lifted by a vacuum head and <strong>the</strong>n<br />

transferred to a sewer line. The water <strong>the</strong>n flows into <strong>the</strong> second section of <strong>the</strong> filtration<br />

vessel after <strong>the</strong> solid waste removal. This section contains four Rotating Biological<br />

Contactors (RBC). RBC’s use nitrifying bacteria to convert toxic metabolic fish waste<br />

(ammonia) to a non-toxic form (nitrate). The filtered water <strong>the</strong>n moves through a 6 inch<br />
