The main control strategy in <strong>the</strong> model is that at increasing outdoor temperatures <strong>the</strong><br />

ventilation is increased from minimum to maximum and that subsequently <strong>the</strong> water<br />

suppletion to <strong>the</strong> system is increased to reach <strong>the</strong> desired water temperature. One of<br />

<strong>the</strong> results of simulations with <strong>the</strong> model is that increasing ventilation through <strong>the</strong><br />

trickling filter by applying a larger fan is a very efficient option for temperature<br />

control. Depending on local conditions, alternative techniques can be used.<br />

Future developments<br />

Currently, a pilot-system with a production capacity of 25 tonnes of eel is being built<br />

according to <strong>the</strong> Blue Label principle. At <strong>the</strong> end of this year, <strong>the</strong> performance of this<br />

system will be evaluated. Apart from specific design of systems, interesting work<br />

remains to be done on design of buildings for farming fish.<br />

The example of <strong>the</strong> development of eel farming in Western Europe clearly shows that<br />

a main drive for system development is business opportunity for farming certain<br />

species in closed systems.<br />
