VALVES 101 –
WAFER CHECK VALVES
Designed for steady flow
conditions, wafer valves assist
with the prevention of backflow
in any fluid system with a low
overall pressure drop.
The design of a wafer check
valve is simple: a thin disc is
split in two and held together by
a hinge pin and spring. As fluid
builds pressure in the system,
the disc pinches together,
allowing the fluid to pass. As
pressure drops, the disc returns
to the closed position, preventing
fluid from returning to its origin.
Traditionally, a wafer check
valve is designed to be installed
between two flanges and may
create tension with a nimonic
spring (in high temperature
installations) or a heavy-duty
spring (if a strong opening
pressure is required).
Significantly lighter than
conventional check valves, wafer
check valves are simple to install
with a number of associated cost
efficiencies resulting in reduced
pipe work layout expenditure.
Not only do they require just one
set of bolts to install, they can
be installed horizontally, with
the pins in a vertical position,
or vertically with flow in the
upwards direction.
You will often find a wafer check
valve in boiler feed lines, steam
traps and hot water circuits. They
are not suitable for systems with
pulsating flow or placement near
to reciprocating pumps.

Last month the winners of the You
Thought Viega Was Quick promotion
flew to Queensland for an exciting day
on the racetrack in not one, but seven, of
Porsche’s finest cars.
There are few times in life when you are given the
chance to take a $200,000 sports car and thrash
it. I’m not talking about just going fast – by the end
of the day these cars were battered and bruised,
accompanied with the smell of abused brakes and
burning rubber wafting through the air.
The Porsche
Sports Driving
School allows
you to do this
safely and under
the careful
supervision
of trained
professional drivers, most of whom race
professionally or work in the racing industry.
Different activities in various cars taught
participants a range of skills including cornering at
speed, acceleration and braking techniques and
overcoming understeer and oversteer.
The highlight for many was the time trial course
which allowed everyone to test what they had
learnt as they commanded a Boxster and Carrera
through a short course marked out with cones.
Other breathtaking moments were made on the skid
pan where participants were able encouraged to try
and control the
high performance
Cayman and
Carrera in wet
conditions with
no traction control
(read: drift and
spin like a mad
man!).
Both days were a massive success, with Tradelink
staff, suppliers and plumbers all being a part of
a phenomenal experience that will not be soon
forgotten.
