Club makes its triumphant return in 2011,
rewarding you in more ways than one
just for spending at Tradelink.
For every purchase you make between 1 March
and 30 November 2011, you’ll receive Travel Points
that you can spend on a range of domestic or

Whilst every purchase will accumulate Points, you
must spend a minimum of $5,000 ex GST during

How to keep a list of most
used items.
The easiest way to keep a list
of your favourite items for use
in the Quote Tool is to set up a
template.
Not only will a template keep the
products you use regularly, you
can also set specific quantities
and custom items (such as
labour) to cover most situations.
To set up a template, simply
log into TradeDoor and click on
‘Create New Template’ button.
Add the products you need
from the search box, specify
the quantities required and click
‘Save’. There are no limits to how
many products you put in your
templates.
You can edit the default
quantities of the template at
any time by typing in the new
amount and clicking the ‘Update
Qty’s’ button to set them. To
delete an item, you must click
the x icon. Setting an item to
zero it will not remove it from the
template.

RINNAI CONTINUOUS FLOW UPGRADE
As a result of recent legislation and market
changes, Rinnai have reviewed and evolved their
leading range of continuous flow hot water units.
A number of changes have occurred across the
range, including an improved Builders range, the
introduction of a new 60ºC temperature setting
(to replace 55ºC models) and increased warranty
periods on the INFINITY and Builders ranges.
There have been numerous temperature setting
changes, with the Classic INFINITY and Builders
models reintroducing two temperature options,
while all Heavy Duty models previously set at
65ºC will now be supplied as 75ºC. Solar Boosters
will increase to 70ºC to meet pending legislation
changes.
Furthermore, Rinnai have introduced a standard
range of approved Warm Water appliances (42ºC)
for domestic and commercial use, and the HD
models are now also available in 50ºC preset.
In addition, all domestic and commercial 50ºC
preset models are now adjustable by the plumber
to offset any heat loss through the pipe work.
Similar to tempering valves, the plumber can adjust
the Rinnai units by up to 4ºC - ensuring that 50ºC
is delivered at the tap, not just out of the hot water
system.

ElECTrICal HazardS for PlUmbErS
Due to the nature of earthing electrical
installations and metallic water systems,
plumbers are at risk of serious or fatal
electric shock if care is not taken.
In most premises, the earthing of electrical
installation is achieved by the connection of the
main earth wire to an earthing electrode that is
driven into the ground.
This helps maintain the earthing system at ground
potential and creates a path for electricity should a
fault develop in the electrical installation. However,
because metallic water systems in the premises
are also bonded to the earthing circuit, they can
be subject to a potential risk under electrical fault
conditions.
Plumbers are at significant risk if they:
• Cut through the water pipe between the earth
connection and the street main
• Remove a water meter
• Disconnect the main earth wire from the water
pipe
Commonly found in older premises, dangerous
power points can also pose a problem, with the
insulation on wiring deteriorating to the extent that
a live wire and earth wire have touched, causing the
earth contacts to be live.
This means anything plugged into that outlet would
become live, turning metal frames into a potentially
deadly source of electrical shock. It is strongly
recommended that a power point safety tester be
used before testing any equipment.
A portable safety switch, also known as a Residual
Current Device (RCD), should be used for all
equipment including extension leads for added
protection against accidents such as faults or
damaged cords.
When working on metallic water pipe systems, the
safest way to approach the situation is to locate the

main switch/switches for the premises and turn
them off. You should then use a bridging conductor
to bond across the section of pipe to be cut and
keep it in place until work is completed.
It is highly recommended that a braided copper
lead, which will carry 70 amps or more with
insulated screw clamps, be used. Ensure the pipe
surface is thoroughly cleaned and in good electrical
contact with the clamps.
If the main earth connection to the water pipe has
to be disconnected, it will be necessary to contact
an electrical contractor to perform this task and
make any alterations necessary in order to maintain
an effective earthing system.
If a metallic water service is being replaced with
plastic water pipe, it will be necessary to have an
electrical contractor make the necessary alterations
to the earthing system, therefore ensuring that the
installation main earthing system remains effective.
If you see electric arcs or experience tingles, it
is imperative that you contact the local electrical
network operator as a fault may exist. Finally, don’t
forget to check the location of underground cables
before you start digging on site.

VALVES 101 –
WAFER CHECK VALVES
Designed for steady flow
conditions, wafer valves assist
with the prevention of backflow
in any fluid system with a low
overall pressure drop.
The design of a wafer check
valve is simple: a thin disc is
split in two and held together by
a hinge pin and spring. As fluid
builds pressure in the system,
the disc pinches together,
allowing the fluid to pass. As
pressure drops, the disc returns
to the closed position, preventing
fluid from returning to its origin.
Traditionally, a wafer check
valve is designed to be installed
between two flanges and may
create tension with a nimonic
spring (in high temperature
installations) or a heavy-duty
spring (if a strong opening
pressure is required).
Significantly lighter than
conventional check valves, wafer
check valves are simple to install
with a number of associated cost
efficiencies resulting in reduced
pipe work layout expenditure.
Not only do they require just one
set of bolts to install, they can
be installed horizontally, with
the pins in a vertical position,
or vertically with flow in the
upwards direction.
You will often find a wafer check
valve in boiler feed lines, steam
traps and hot water circuits. They
are not suitable for systems with
pulsating flow or placement near
to reciprocating pumps.

Last month the winners of the You
Thought Viega Was Quick promotion
flew to Queensland for an exciting day
on the racetrack in not one, but seven, of
Porsche’s finest cars.
There are few times in life when you are given the
chance to take a $200,000 sports car and thrash
it. I’m not talking about just going fast – by the end
of the day these cars were battered and bruised,
accompanied with the smell of abused brakes and
burning rubber wafting through the air.
The Porsche
Sports Driving
School allows
you to do this
safely and under
the careful
supervision
of trained
professional drivers, most of whom race
professionally or work in the racing industry.
Different activities in various cars taught
participants a range of skills including cornering at
speed, acceleration and braking techniques and
overcoming understeer and oversteer.
The highlight for many was the time trial course
which allowed everyone to test what they had
learnt as they commanded a Boxster and Carrera
through a short course marked out with cones.
Other breathtaking moments were made on the skid
pan where participants were able encouraged to try
and control the
high performance
Cayman and
Carrera in wet
conditions with
no traction control
(read: drift and
spin like a mad
man!).
Both days were a massive success, with Tradelink
staff, suppliers and plumbers all being a part of
a phenomenal experience that will not be soon
forgotten.

What’s in a name? Not many people
realise the rich Spanish history and
