The Hudson River Tunnel.
The Hudson River Tunnel was projected
about ten years ago by a party of California
capitalists, among whom was
Col. De Witt C. Haskins, who had been
engaged in similar undertakings there.
The scheme was at lirst considered impracticable
and the company met with
obstacles at every step; the most formidable,
however, was the opposition of tht
railway companies who claimed the entire
river front. After a iiuiiilierof law
suit*, the company were allowed to coinderail
a sufficient urea of'land tu commence
operations. An immense brick
sliaft was SJiiit iit the foot of Fifteenth
Btreet, but the work was brought to :i
Buduen stop by an injunction olitainen
bv tlielMaware, Lickawannaaud Western
Railway Company, whose hind :ul
joinsthatoi' theTuniielCuinpany. Nothmg
was done for several yenrs except in
the courts, until at last llie Tunnel Company
were victorious and operatioii!were
immediately resuinei). The *h;ift
was completed and work was cominenctMj
upon the tunnel proper.
Tlie use of compressed air in such operations
was comparatively new, tin,,
•was the invention of Col. Hasliins himself.
It had beef successfully used in
rarious underground works ni C>ilifo'iii;..
and on tlie Mississippi river. Engineer.'
were divided in opinion, ami it was considered
an experiment. Unlorlunatrly,
the work was mil commenced propcrl)
at the connection of tin: tunnel with tli,
shaft, and the terrible accident by whie.l.
twenty-four lives were losl is still fresh in
the memory of the public. Tins w;i>
caused by "the caving in of the loose
made soil between the sliiift and tinair
lock. In order to inakea good showing
to the stockholders a temporary con
nection was made instead ol a solid and
permanent one, and the main work wn.pushed
under the bed of the rivet. Tin
experiment was a costly one. and caused
great delay us well as great expense. In
April, 1881. Gen.SiiuySuiitli.il graduate
of West Point, and an eminent engineer,
took charge of the work, mid from thai
time it has gone on safely and rapidly.
An immense eaission was sunk anil si
permanent connection nuule with the
tunnel. New cuiunveKsed air tnucldner\
was added and every possible precaution
taken ngainst accidents. It was originally
intended to build the tunnel enliivh
of brick, but at the sunnetition of the engineers,
concrete has been substituted
for tlie lower section, while the upper
section or half ol the circle is of briili.
the whole being encased in heavy iron
work firmly riveted together, thus making
the work as strong sis human ingenuity
and s-kill can devise.
It was originally intended to build one
shaft or tunnel, but the plan has been
changed, and two parallel shafts are ber
ing constructed. They are known as the
Horth nndtheSouthtiiuncls. Thefiirmer
lias been completed a distance of 80(1
feet from tlie caisson, while the latter
hns reached 850 feet, the work on both
