Spread<strong>in</strong>g the word<br />

> Electrically isolated anchors<br />

have represented the state-of-theart<br />

for over 20 years and are now<br />

becom<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly popular<br />

outside Switzerland. They were first<br />

<strong>in</strong>troduced <strong>in</strong> 1985 at the<br />

Stadelhofen Stati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> Zürich,<br />

where VSL <strong>in</strong>stalled some<br />

950 electrically isolated anchors.<br />

This started a development that<br />

later became a code requirement<br />

<strong>in</strong> Switzerland. It is now an <strong>in</strong>tegral<br />

part of the EN 1537 norm for<br />

anchors and is attract<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>creased<br />

<strong>in</strong>terest outside Switzerland. The<br />

method <strong>in</strong>volves check<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

quality of the corrosi<strong>on</strong> protecti<strong>on</strong><br />

by measur<strong>in</strong>g electrical resistance.<br />

This determ<strong>in</strong>es the tightness of<br />

the encapsulati<strong>on</strong> around the<br />

anchor and the isolati<strong>on</strong> between<br />

the anchor head and the structure.<br />

A m<strong>in</strong>imum resistance value means<br />

that the encapsulati<strong>on</strong> and<br />

<strong>in</strong>sulati<strong>on</strong> are provid<strong>in</strong>g an adequate<br />

barrier, sufficient to prevent any<br />

damage from chemical attacks and<br />

stray currents. It is essential for the<br />

anchor to be robust and carefully<br />

assembled for the method to work.<br />

A recent applicati<strong>on</strong> of the<br />

technique was <strong>on</strong> the Caselertobel<br />

Bridge <strong>in</strong> the Sch<strong>in</strong>schlucht, <strong>in</strong> the<br />

Cant<strong>on</strong> of Gris<strong>on</strong>s. VSL secured the<br />

stability of the bridge pillars with<br />

57 electrically isolated anchors.<br />

These were unusually l<strong>on</strong>g,<br />

measur<strong>in</strong>g up to 60m, a challenge<br />

for VSL and Greuter Ltd., the<br />

drill<strong>in</strong>g company. Force as well as<br />

electrical resistance can be<br />

measured at any time at fourteen of<br />

the anchors. ■<br />

More CS 2000. VSL France has<br />

successfully completed the posttensi<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

works for 4 bridges<br />

Paris to Strasbourg: 26 units of<br />

CS 2000 6-12 and 156 units of<br />

CS 2000 6-19 have been <strong>in</strong>stalled.<br />

Work was completed <strong>in</strong> April,<br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong> from VSL France’s 1st<br />

applicati<strong>on</strong> us<strong>in</strong>g CS 2000 last year.<br />

Award. Puente la Unidad has w<strong>on</strong><br />

the bridge category of the Post-<br />

Tensi<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong>g Institute 2004 award,<br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g its Grand Award from the<br />

American Council of Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Companies. Entries were based <strong>on</strong><br />

creativity, <strong>in</strong>novati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>in</strong>genuity,<br />

cost effectiveness, functi<strong>on</strong>ality,<br />

c<strong>on</strong>structability and aesthetics.<br />

Medal. The British group of IABSE<br />

has launched an award for<br />

excellence <strong>in</strong> structural design,<br />

the Milne Medal. The first w<strong>in</strong>ner<br />

is Mr Sr<strong>in</strong>ivasan for his designs of<br />

Wadi Leban Bridge (Saudi Arabia)<br />

and Wadi Abdhoun Bridge<br />

(Jordan). Both structures feature<br />

VSL stay cables.<br />

VIP at Fib. French M<strong>in</strong>ister of<br />

C<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> Gilles de Robien<br />

visited the VSL booth at April’s<br />

fédérati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternati<strong>on</strong>ale du bét<strong>on</strong><br />

(fib) meet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Avign<strong>on</strong>. He<br />

expressed <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> posttensi<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

and VSL activities and<br />

was presented with an art book <strong>on</strong><br />
