CS 2000’s Spanish debut<br />

Footbridges<br />

M<strong>in</strong>e open<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

> Two years of c<strong>on</strong>centrated<br />

efforts have resulted <strong>in</strong> VSL <strong>in</strong> Chile<br />

achiev<strong>in</strong>g ISO9001:2000 quality<br />

management certificati<strong>on</strong>. The<br />

award covers the design, supply<br />

and c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> of post-tensi<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

structures, mechanically stabilised<br />

reta<strong>in</strong>ed earth walls and special<br />

projects. It also applies to the<br />

supply and <strong>in</strong>stallati<strong>on</strong> of bridge<br />

expansi<strong>on</strong> jo<strong>in</strong>ts. Obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the<br />

certificati<strong>on</strong> has brought about<br />

improvements <strong>in</strong> VSL’s operat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

procedures and at the same time<br />

will help the company to access<br />

specific markets such as the<br />

m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry. ■<br />

Diversificati<strong>on</strong><br />

Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g strengthened<br />

> A three day <strong>in</strong>tensive sales<br />

team tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g sessi<strong>on</strong> for bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

development eng<strong>in</strong>eers was held<br />

<strong>in</strong> June 2004 as part of VSL’s<br />

diversificati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong>to c<strong>on</strong>crete repair<br />

and strengthen<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Asia-Pacific<br />

for the petrochemical and oil/gas<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustries. VSL now has the<br />

with the CS 2000 system and<br />

640 anchorages were <strong>in</strong>stalled. This<br />

was the first time that CS 2000 6-31<br />

units had been used <strong>on</strong> such a large<br />

scale. The work <strong>in</strong>cluded the supply<br />

of 58 POT bear<strong>in</strong>gs for 4 pre-cast<br />

viaducts as well as the supply of POT<br />

bear<strong>in</strong>gs and post-tensi<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong>g works<br />

for two major viaducts, Avernó and<br />

B<strong>on</strong>tec1<br />

Prov<strong>in</strong>g its<br />

worth<br />

> Demand for the new B<strong>on</strong>tec1<br />

b<strong>on</strong>ded post-tensi<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong>g system<br />

c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ues to grow. It has already been<br />

used for applicati<strong>on</strong>s with a total area<br />

of 110,000m 2 across 13 projects,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g offices, <strong>in</strong>dustrial build<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

and universities. B<strong>on</strong>tec1 is an<br />

<strong>in</strong>novative encapsulated system for<br />

b<strong>on</strong>ded post-tensi<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong>g us<strong>in</strong>g the VSL<br />

S5N anchorage with PE ducts. One of<br />

its ma<strong>in</strong> advantages is that any future<br />

modificati<strong>on</strong>s will be easier than if an<br />

unb<strong>on</strong>ded system had been used.<br />

Use of the system is also start<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to highlight cost benefits. Fewer<br />

re<strong>in</strong>forcement bars are needed, giv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

sav<strong>in</strong>gs as steel prices rise. The total<br />

price is now slightly cheaper than for<br />

unb<strong>on</strong>ded systems. ■<br />

Chile<br />

Bridg<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the tracks<br />

> VSL footbridges have earned a<br />

very good reputati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> the Chilean<br />

market. The use of post-tensi<strong>on</strong>ed<br />

trusses gives c<strong>on</strong>trol over<br />

c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> loads and deflecti<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

The la<strong>test</strong> project <strong>in</strong>volves the<br />

c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> of four footbridges for<br />

the nati<strong>on</strong>al rail system EFE,<br />

a major safety programme which<br />

<strong>in</strong>cludes the c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> of many<br />

pedestrian bridges and the fenc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of rail tracks. The EFE project is<br />

the first <strong>in</strong> which this footbridge<br />

has been used over a railway.<br />
