and tubes<br />

> A new adm<strong>in</strong>istrative build<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

the Pankrac House, is be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

delivered close to the city centre<br />

of Prague. The ma<strong>in</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tractor is<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sortium Porr – Swietelsky, the<br />

subc<strong>on</strong>tractor of the structural<br />

part is Skanska CZ. S<strong>in</strong>ce space<br />

for the foundati<strong>on</strong> was limited<br />

because of nearby metro tunnels,<br />

a special structural system made<br />

of arches with ties and tensi<strong>on</strong>ed<br />

columns was required. The ties<br />

and tensi<strong>on</strong>ed columns are posttensi<strong>on</strong>ed,<br />

us<strong>in</strong>g tend<strong>on</strong>s with 2 to<br />

22 strands. The upper floors with a<br />

10-m span are post-tensi<strong>on</strong>ed with<br />

4-strand tend<strong>on</strong>s <strong>in</strong> flat ducts. ■<br />

France<br />

Luxury pool<br />

> VSL France has been awarded a<br />

post-tensi<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong>g c<strong>on</strong>tract (design,<br />

supply and <strong>in</strong>stallati<strong>on</strong>) for the<br />

c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> of the Larvotto Hotel<br />

terrace <strong>in</strong> M<strong>on</strong>aco. Located very<br />

close to the sea, the 4,200-m 2 slab<br />

terrace holds a luxury pool called the<br />

"Lago<strong>on</strong>". The post-tensi<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

provided by VSL is 6-7 cables <strong>in</strong> both<br />

directi<strong>on</strong>s, totall<strong>in</strong>g about 110t of<br />

Rail bridge shift<br />

> As part of the c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> of<br />

the A28 highway, VSL France<br />

shifted a rail bridge <strong>in</strong>to positi<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>on</strong> the Paris-Caen railway l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong><br />

May 2004. Dur<strong>in</strong>g the 60-hour<br />

w<strong>in</strong>dow for the work, 15,000m 3 of<br />

270-t bridge deck <strong>in</strong>to positi<strong>on</strong> over<br />

tw<strong>in</strong> tracks of the L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong>-to-Exeter<br />

and Bristol-to-Southampt<strong>on</strong><br />

railway l<strong>in</strong>es. The deck slide is part<br />

of the £3 milli<strong>on</strong> Highways Agency<br />

safety project to upgrade the A36<br />

Skew Bridge <strong>in</strong> Salisbury. Precast<br />

elements feature str<strong>on</strong>gly <strong>on</strong> this<br />

project. Each footbridge c<strong>on</strong>sists of<br />

four precast beams and <strong>in</strong>-situ<br />

deck slab. Each beam is 26-m-l<strong>on</strong>g<br />

earth were removed, and the<br />

railway bridge (3,500t) was slid<br />

<strong>in</strong>to its f<strong>in</strong>al positi<strong>on</strong> us<strong>in</strong>g four<br />

1,000-t heavy lift<strong>in</strong>g units. ■<br />

United K<strong>in</strong>gdom<br />

Strand jacked bridge<br />

over live railway<br />

and weighs up to 50t. VSL supplied<br />

heavyweight hydraulic jacks to lift<br />

and suspend the deck from the<br />

temporary steel tracks work<strong>in</strong>g<br />

near a live rail l<strong>in</strong>e. The lift<strong>in</strong>g<br />

beams, with the bridge deck<br />

suspended beneath them, were<br />

then pulled <strong>on</strong> phosphor br<strong>on</strong>ze<br />

skates al<strong>on</strong>g the tracks by strand<br />

jacks. When <strong>in</strong> positi<strong>on</strong>, the deck<br />

was lowered <strong>on</strong>to the abutments. ■<br />
