> The civil works <strong>on</strong> the two<br />

Damietta LNG tanks were completed<br />

at the end of May 2004. After<br />

successful water <strong>test</strong>s <strong>in</strong> March and<br />

April, the doors of the tanks were<br />

closed <strong>in</strong> mid-May. More than<br />

1,000 t<strong>on</strong>nes of strand were <strong>in</strong>stalled<br />

for the two tanks for Saipem. The<br />

work was d<strong>on</strong>e <strong>in</strong> a jo<strong>in</strong>t venture with<br />

Bouygues Civil Works. ■<br />

> One of the most important<br />

cross<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>on</strong> the St. Petersburg<br />

R<strong>in</strong>g Road, the Neva River cablestayed<br />

bridge is a tw<strong>in</strong>-pyl<strong>on</strong><br />

structure with a 382-m ma<strong>in</strong><br />

span and two 174-m backspans.<br />

The deck and pyl<strong>on</strong>s are made<br />

of steel. The 24.9-m-wide,<br />

2.4-m-high (dur<strong>in</strong>g c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong>)<br />

and 12-m-l<strong>on</strong>g deck segments<br />

are fabricated by bolt<strong>in</strong>g<br />

together several secti<strong>on</strong>s to<br />

make the 120-t double-box<br />

girder segment.<br />

Over 440,000m of galvanised<br />

strands have been <strong>in</strong>dividually<br />

greased, coated with a highdensity<br />

polyethylene sheath<br />

stressed and stressed<br />

(SSI2000 stay cable system).<br />

The stay cable sizes vary from<br />

13 to 91 strands.<br />

Short and tough schedule<br />

c<strong>on</strong>stra<strong>in</strong>ts associated with the<br />

difficulties of cast<strong>in</strong>g c<strong>on</strong>crete<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g the extremely low<br />

temperatures of a Russian<br />

w<strong>in</strong>ter has led to the use of<br />

10XCHD steel (Russian grade)<br />

as a basic material. The supply<br />

of the stay-cable system and<br />

technical assistance for the<br />

<strong>in</strong>stallati<strong>on</strong> of stays has been<br />

subc<strong>on</strong>tracted by Mostootriad<br />

19 to VSL. The <strong>in</strong>stallati<strong>on</strong> of<br />

stays started <strong>in</strong> Aug. 2003 and is<br />

due for completi<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> summer 2004.<br />

> VSL Middle East has delivered<br />

successfully and <strong>on</strong> time the soil wall<br />

and post-tensi<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong>g packages for the<br />

Salwa, Immigrati<strong>on</strong>, and Luqta<br />

Interchanges <strong>in</strong> Doha, Qatar.<br />

The project <strong>in</strong>cluded 11,000m 2 of the<br />

VSoL ® polymeric soil wall system and<br />

170 t<strong>on</strong>nes of post-tensi<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong>g to the<br />

bridge deck c<strong>on</strong>crete box girders. The<br />

ma<strong>in</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tractor was J&P, and the<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sultant supervis<strong>in</strong>g the project<br />

was Technital. ■<br />

80 jacks<br />

<strong>in</strong> Muscat<br />

> At the end of 2003, VSL<br />

Switzerland was awarded the<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tract for the jack<strong>in</strong>g and lower<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of bridges <strong>in</strong> the sec<strong>on</strong>d phase of a<br />

repair project <strong>in</strong> Muscat, Oman.<br />

The first phase was carried out <strong>in</strong><br />

1998. On-site operati<strong>on</strong>s started <strong>in</strong><br />

early January 2004 and are to be<br />

completed <strong>in</strong> September 2004.<br />

More than 80 VSL jacks are be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

used as called for by the ma<strong>in</strong><br />

c<strong>on</strong>tractor's sequence of works.<br />

Other repair projects are expected <strong>in</strong><br />

the near future <strong>in</strong> this area as part<br />

of the overall bridge repair<br />

Jordan bridge. VSL is work<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>on</strong> the Wadi Abdoun cablestayed<br />

bridge, a very technical<br />

project <strong>in</strong> Amman. VSL is<br />

modell<strong>in</strong>g the entire structure<br />

to carry out stress analysis and<br />

geometry c<strong>on</strong>trol dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong>. Design, supply and<br />

<strong>in</strong>stallati<strong>on</strong> of the stay-cable<br />

system as well as the posttensi<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

works will be<br />

supplied.<br />

Ec<strong>on</strong>omical jack<strong>in</strong>g. VSL France<br />

has w<strong>on</strong> a large repair c<strong>on</strong>tract,<br />

thanks to an alternative <strong>in</strong>house<br />

hydraulic jack<strong>in</strong>g<br />

technique that provides<br />

significant sav<strong>in</strong>gs: jack<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of 12 bridges, replacement of<br />

the bear<strong>in</strong>gs, and the supply<br />

and <strong>in</strong>stallati<strong>on</strong> of 400m of new<br />

expansi<strong>on</strong> jo<strong>in</strong>ts.<br />

Incremental launch. A team of<br />

six VSL specialists is launch<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the deck of the La Bresle<br />

Viaduct <strong>on</strong> the A29 motorway <strong>in</strong><br />

Normandy, France for Razel<br />

Civil Works Divisi<strong>on</strong>, ma<strong>in</strong><br />

c<strong>on</strong>tractor with three SLU 330<br />

jacks at a rate of 30m per week.<br />

VSL is <strong>in</strong> charge of the full posttensi<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

of the viaduct.<br />

French VSoL ® . VSL France has<br />

been awarded three reta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

earth projects <strong>in</strong> France:<br />

abutment walls at Homécourt<br />

(400m 2 ), pla<strong>in</strong> walls and<br />

abutment walls at Limoges<br />

(1,295m 2 ), and walls made with<br />

steel-mesh fac<strong>in</strong>g panels<br />

(1,635m 2 ) at Bois Roger, for the<br />

A28 BOT motorway. This project<br />

is the first time <strong>in</strong> France that<br />

6.50-m-high walls have been<br />

used to support a motorway<br />

secti<strong>on</strong> of such dimensi<strong>on</strong>s<br />

(270m l<strong>on</strong>g and four lanes).<br />
