erect pre-cast segments <strong>on</strong> the<br />

Deep <strong>Bay</strong> L<strong>in</strong>k North and<br />

Shenzhen Western Corridor. The<br />

Deep <strong>Bay</strong> Project is a new crossboundary<br />

road l<strong>in</strong>k between H<strong>on</strong>g<br />

K<strong>on</strong>g, New Territories and<br />

Shenzhen, Ma<strong>in</strong>land Ch<strong>in</strong>a.<br />

Segment erecti<strong>on</strong> started <strong>in</strong> June<br />

Malaysia<br />

Lift<strong>in</strong>g traffic woes<br />

> The use of a lifter is m<strong>in</strong>imis<strong>in</strong>g<br />

traffic disturbance dur<strong>in</strong>g erecti<strong>on</strong><br />

of pre-cast segments for the 720m<br />

Jalan Gopeng Viaduct. Cranes would<br />

have caused far more disrupti<strong>on</strong> to<br />

travellers <strong>on</strong> the busy road lead<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

Ipoh town. Up to 4 segments are<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g placed a day, speed<strong>in</strong>g up<br />

c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> of the viaduct that will<br />

ease c<strong>on</strong>gesti<strong>on</strong>. Each of the<br />

282 segments is a s<strong>in</strong>gle cell box and<br />

their weights range from 80t to 95t.<br />

The balanced cantilever method is<br />

used to erect most segments <strong>in</strong> the<br />

48m to 60m spans. Launch<strong>in</strong>g is<br />

carried out by a comb<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> of a<br />

short span stati<strong>on</strong>ary truss and<br />

lifters equipped with SMU-120 jacks.<br />

The truss is used for the pier<br />

segment and some of the span<br />

elements before be<strong>in</strong>g removed by<br />

cranes. The lifters are then<br />

assembled <strong>on</strong> both sides of the<br />

erected deck. Once each pair of<br />

segments has been put up, the<br />

cantilever tend<strong>on</strong>s are stressed and<br />

the lifters can then be launched<br />

forward to pick up the next<br />

segments. A typical erecti<strong>on</strong> cycle for<br />

<strong>on</strong>e cantilever is 14 days. The bridge<br />

level and alignment is m<strong>on</strong>itored as<br />

the launch<strong>in</strong>g progresses. ■<br />

Deep <strong>Bay</strong> L<strong>in</strong>k North has the<br />

largest structure, c<strong>on</strong>sist<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

tw<strong>in</strong> 5.4km decks. Three overhead<br />

gantries and a scaffold system are<br />

needed to erect 3,000 pre-cast<br />

segments, which weigh between<br />

35t and 80t. Shenzhen Western<br />

Corridor has a length of 3.02km<br />

and is also a tw<strong>in</strong> deck structure.<br />

Two overhead gantries will erect<br />

approximately 2,000 pre-cast<br />

segments, rang<strong>in</strong>g from 100t to<br />
