Net benefits<br />

> VSL H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g has used<br />

4,500m2 of VSoL ® mesh wall to<br />

provide a novel alternative soluti<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> secur<strong>in</strong>g the slopes for an<br />

important site access road for the<br />

Shat<strong>in</strong> Heights project <strong>in</strong> H<strong>on</strong>g<br />

K<strong>on</strong>g. The orig<strong>in</strong>al <strong>in</strong>tenti<strong>on</strong> was to<br />

use a geogrid re<strong>in</strong>forced slope for<br />

the access road support, but the<br />

240m l<strong>on</strong>g by 22m high VSoL ® wall<br />

proved more cost effective.<br />

It also had other benefits.<br />

> VSL recently made its name <strong>in</strong><br />

the Indian heavy lift<strong>in</strong>g market by<br />

successfully <strong>in</strong>stall<strong>in</strong>g a 325t De<br />

Hydra Di-sulphate Reactor <strong>in</strong>side<br />

an operati<strong>on</strong>al ref<strong>in</strong>ery <strong>in</strong> Mumbai<br />

<strong>in</strong> February. VSL was assigned<br />

the c<strong>on</strong>tract by sub c<strong>on</strong>tractors,<br />

M/s Freight W<strong>in</strong>gs PVT Ltd under<br />

the ma<strong>in</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tractor M/s Larsen &<br />

Toubro Limited. The reactor is 42m<br />

l<strong>on</strong>g with a diameter of 3.7m and is<br />

The system uses steel mesh<br />

ladders and steel mesh fac<strong>in</strong>g units<br />

which are flexible enough to enable<br />

site modificati<strong>on</strong> to tie <strong>in</strong> with the<br />

exist<strong>in</strong>g rock slope. The VSL site<br />

team achieved <strong>in</strong>stallati<strong>on</strong> rates of<br />

up to 100m 2 of wall face per day,<br />

work<strong>in</strong>g immediately beh<strong>in</strong>d the<br />

soil nail<strong>in</strong>g operati<strong>on</strong>s giv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

temporary support to the cut face.<br />

India<br />

React<strong>in</strong>g to a hot<br />

challenge<br />

surrounded by pipel<strong>in</strong>es carry<strong>in</strong>g<br />

diesel at a temperature of 360°C.<br />

It was lifted to a height of 52.85m<br />

us<strong>in</strong>g VSL lift<strong>in</strong>g jacks supported<br />

by two towers and a portal beam,<br />

then slid transversely and f<strong>in</strong>ally<br />

lowered <strong>on</strong>to its foundati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The job was successfully<br />

completed <strong>in</strong> 17 hours by a skilled<br />

team of 17 members. ■<br />

Backtrack<strong>in</strong>g<br />

> For the prestigious H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g<br />

build<strong>in</strong>g project, KW P3,VSL H<strong>on</strong>g<br />

K<strong>on</strong>g supported the ma<strong>in</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tractor<br />

Sanfield and c<strong>on</strong>sultant Arup <strong>in</strong><br />

f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g an ec<strong>on</strong>omical method for<br />

build<strong>in</strong>g a c<strong>on</strong>nect<strong>in</strong>g deck spann<strong>in</strong>g<br />

30m between two towers, 135m<br />

above ground level: rais<strong>in</strong>g a 350t<br />

work<strong>in</strong>g platform by 106m dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong>e<br />

night. This was achieved by <strong>in</strong>stall<strong>in</strong>g<br />

SMU-70 jacks upside down <strong>in</strong>side the<br />

platform, climb<strong>in</strong>g up a static lift<strong>in</strong>g<br />

cable. The lift<strong>in</strong>g/lower<strong>in</strong>g equipment<br />

then rema<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> place dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> of the upper floors. ■<br />

Dual systems<br />

segments <strong>on</strong> the Lok Ma Chau<br />

Viaduct which extends the railway<br />

from the exist<strong>in</strong>g KCRC Sheung Shui<br />

stati<strong>on</strong> to the new Lok Ma Chau<br />

stati<strong>on</strong>. VSL’s work <strong>in</strong>cludes the<br />

erecti<strong>on</strong> of the pre-cast segments as<br />

well as the supply and <strong>in</strong>stallati<strong>on</strong> of<br />

permanent post-tensi<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong>g and<br />

grout<strong>in</strong>g, bear<strong>in</strong>gs and s<strong>in</strong>gle element<br />

expansi<strong>on</strong> jo<strong>in</strong>ts. Completi<strong>on</strong><br />
