Purpose<br />

VSL has developed a service that<br />

allows an authorised client, user or<br />

owner of a bridge or other structure<br />

to have secure and easy access to<br />

m<strong>on</strong>itor<strong>in</strong>g data through the<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternet <strong>in</strong> real time.<br />

Descripti<strong>on</strong><br />

VSL DeM<strong>on</strong> Web is a comb<strong>in</strong>ati<strong>on</strong><br />

of web services provided by VSL.<br />

The VSL DeM<strong>on</strong> Site software is<br />

<strong>in</strong>stalled <strong>on</strong> the structure, where<br />

it collects and filters the raw data<br />

– both static and dynamic – before<br />

send<strong>in</strong>g it to a VSL DeM<strong>on</strong> Web<br />

server. VSL DeM<strong>on</strong> may be used<br />

with any type or number of<br />

sensors (from <strong>on</strong>e to 1,000) and<br />

<strong>on</strong> any size of project.<br />

Applicati<strong>on</strong>s are:<br />

• Temporary <strong>in</strong>strumentati<strong>on</strong><br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> can <strong>in</strong>clude<br />

<strong>in</strong>stallati<strong>on</strong> of stay cables, safety<br />

c<strong>on</strong>trol, sound and vibrati<strong>on</strong><br />

m<strong>on</strong>itor<strong>in</strong>g, stress and<br />

Descripti<strong>on</strong><br />

Initial tensi<strong>on</strong> detecti<strong>on</strong> dur<strong>in</strong>g lift-off<br />

of the exist<strong>in</strong>g AMS 3.0 system is<br />

based <strong>on</strong> a pop-off event tak<strong>in</strong>g place<br />

at the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of tensi<strong>on</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />

However the pop-off may not happen<br />

<strong>in</strong> some circumstances, where the<br />

force is low or where the wedges are<br />

excessively greased. The new<br />

AMS 3.1 program resp<strong>on</strong>ds to<br />

displacement c<strong>on</strong>trol and<br />

process<strong>in</strong>g of heavy lift<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

• Exist<strong>in</strong>g structures can be fitted<br />

with temporary <strong>in</strong>strumentati<strong>on</strong><br />

to exam<strong>in</strong>e aspects such as the<br />

validati<strong>on</strong> of shr<strong>in</strong>kage<br />

hypotheses, identificati<strong>on</strong> of<br />

pathology and the validati<strong>on</strong> of<br />

damp<strong>in</strong>g systems.<br />

• The system can be used for<br />

permanent <strong>in</strong>strumentati<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>on</strong>g term m<strong>on</strong>itor<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of complex structures,<br />

management of <strong>in</strong>specti<strong>on</strong><br />

reports, m<strong>on</strong>itor<strong>in</strong>g of safety and<br />

the behaviour <strong>in</strong> seismic<br />

envir<strong>on</strong>ment.<br />

<strong>in</strong> any situati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Advantage<br />

The new AMS 3.1 is able to detect<br />

<strong>in</strong>itial tensi<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> strand dur<strong>in</strong>g liftoff<br />

with, or without, pop-off of the<br />
