Nick Cantales ’11 was one <strong>of</strong> three<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>Albany</strong> recipients <strong>of</strong> the<br />

2011 Provost’s Award for Undergradu<strong>at</strong>e<br />

Research – involving a certifi c<strong>at</strong>e<br />

and monetary prize – for his project<br />

examining the benefi ts <strong>of</strong> using arbitrage<br />

in the management <strong>of</strong> institutional<br />

equity and fi xed income funds,<br />

“Is the Use <strong>of</strong> Arbitrage an Effective<br />

Str<strong>at</strong>egy in Institutional Portfolios?”<br />

Abigail Karam, B.S. ACC ’11, was the student<br />

<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Business</strong> commencement speaker.<br />

His mentor, Associ<strong>at</strong>e Pr<strong>of</strong>essor David<br />

Smith was recognized for his guidance.<br />

Cantales also won Best Senior <strong>The</strong>sis<br />

Award from the Center for Institutional<br />

Investment Management.<br />

Sander Anker ’11 presented “How<br />

Does Sponsorship <strong>of</strong> the FIFA World<br />

Cup Affect Stock Price?” <strong>at</strong> the <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>at</strong> <strong>Albany</strong> Undergradu<strong>at</strong>e Research<br />

Conference, providing evidence for<br />

competitive advantage in the stock<br />

market for companies th<strong>at</strong> are <strong>of</strong>fi cial<br />

sponsors <strong>of</strong> the FIFA World Cup in<br />

1998, 2002 and 2006. His results suggest<br />

th<strong>at</strong> FIFA may have underpriced<br />

its commercial sponsorships.<br />

As mentioned in the spring 2011 issue<br />

<strong>of</strong> this magazine, Shane Lockhart ’11,<br />

presented his senior thesis, “<strong>The</strong> Use<br />

<strong>of</strong> Technical Analysis by Hedge Funds,”<br />

<strong>at</strong> the Federal Reserve Bank <strong>of</strong> Dallas’<br />

2011 Economics Scholars Program<br />

Conference.<br />
