Dear YWCA Friends,
In May 2010 the YWCA West Central Michigan marked its 110 th anniversary. Longevity like that is no accident and
comes only when visionary leadership is coupled with practical management. The YWCA has been, and continues to be,
keenly aware that the link between providing quality services and improving the quality of life – particularly for the most
vulnerable among us – cannot be overlooked. This is our guiding principle, as much today as it was over a century ago.
These efforts were once again formally recognized by the YWCA’s accrediting body – the Council on Accreditation
(COA) – and the state office charged with overseeing Michigan’s domestic violence programs – the Michigan Domestic
Violence Prevention and Treatment Board (MDVPTB). Having achieved exemplary scores in our previous two
accreditation reviews, the YWCA was one of just twelve organizations nationwide chosen to participate in COA’s
focused review pilot. MDVPTB and COA reviewers spent several days touring each YWCA facility, meeting with staff
and volunteers, and evaluating the YWCA’s services and administrative operations against more than 100 best practices.
Both organizations found the YWCA to be in full compliance, and in many areas, a model for similar organizations.
The YWCA incorporates an exceptional and broad range of elements to assure the highest quality services are available
and accessible to our community. This requires ongoing attention to professional development of staff, culturalsensitivity,
linguistic-sensitivity, financial well-being, and administrative management that provides the resources
needed to improve services and fill community gaps. The YWCA is on the mark. Evidence of this is contained in the
following pages of this report, with even greater detail available on our website (www.ywcawcmi.org).
Community collaborations that raise awareness and have the broadest, most effective impact for victims of violence are
equally important to providing quality services. As we look to the coming year, we are enthusiastic about what lies
ahead. In 2011, in partnership with the Children’s Assessment Center, the YWCA will combine our thirty-plus years of
experience in providing support to victims of childhood sexual abuse with our expertise in medical-forensic
examinations. The YWCA will provide after-hours forensic examinations for pediatric patients in cases where there is
suspicion that the child was recently assaulted. Similar partnerships are being explored with RAVE in order to provide
medical-forensic sexual assault examinations for patients over twelve years old in the rural communities of Montcalm
and Ionia counties.
The impact of race is intrinsically tied to issues of violence against women and women’s experiences in achieving a
greater quality of life. This is particularly true for women of color. In response, the YWCA will host our second annual
“Stand Against Racism” in April as part of a national-YWCA anti-racism awareness campaign. Building on the success
of our 2010 event, which attracted media attention and over twenty partners representing the local education,
commercial, and religious sectors, we are confident 2011 will prove to be equally successful.
A professional financial review of our 2009-10 records underscored the YWCA’s sound fiscal management and once
again produced an unqualified opinion from our auditors. Volunteers continued to provide invaluable support, logging
almost 11,000 hours of donated time last year. Indicating the strength of the YWCA’s private fund development work,
the organization saw an 11% increase in donor retention.
For 110 years, the YWCA has remained a vital resource for the women of our community. As a result, children and
families are safer and experience a deeper, richer quality of life. The YWCA’s friends have been central to making that

ywca services work in concert to address the issues of violence against
women and children which undermine individuals, families, and our community
The YWCA’s Domestic Violence Services have been an integral part of our programming since 1977. We are one
of Michigan’s leaders in responding to the issue of domestic violence. Our services have evolved to include crisis
intervention, emergency shelter, specialized counseling for victims and assailants, programs that teach healthy
parenting techniques, supervised parenting time and safe child exchange, medical-forensic examinations, and a
long-term transitional housing component designed to equip women so they can better support themselves
independently and live free from violence after they transition out of the shelter.
For families experiencing the trauma of incest or non-familial molestation, there are the YWCA Child
Sexual Abuse Treatment Services. Components of our treatment program include individual, family,
marital, and group counseling, as well as educational and support groups.
Noted as one of the most comprehensive programs in Michigan, the YWCA’s Sexual Assault Services
include critical crisis intervention, individual and group therapy, and short-term respite services for victims
unable to return home. The YWCA’s Nurse Examiner Program is also our community’s resource for medical
-forensic sexual assault examinations for patients age 13 years and older.
Girls Inc. ® at the YWCA West Central Michigan offers programs designed to build girls’ self-esteem and
confidence, help them set boundaries, and develop healthy relationships with adults—all key elements to reducing
girls’ vulnerability to violence. As Michigan’s first Girls Inc. ® affiliate, we offer programs that teach self-defense
and violence prevention; adolescent pregnancy prevention; media and economic literacy; skills to resist pressure to
use harmful drugs; skills that increase self-confidence in science, math, technology and related careers; and
leadership development.

YWCA West Central Michigan board members are charged with governance of the organization. Board
members actively oversee the YWCA’s finances, compliance with best practice standards, participate in private
fund-raising and community outreach efforts, and develop organizational advocacy policies based on the
YWCA’s strategic plan, mission, and vision.
Potential new members are identified by a committee comprised of community leaders, volunteers and current
board members. A slate of candidates is voted upon annually by the YWCA Board of Directors. New members
are chosen based on a proven commitment to the YWCA mission and their ability to support the organization as
it works to meet that mission.

April 2010 — Sexual Assault Awareness Month
The YWCA launched its first “Denim Day” effort as part of Sexual
Assault Awareness month, and enthusiasm spread quickly. Local
salon, Belladonna Salon & Spa, raised over $1,200 with its “Spa
Night” for YWCA services. The Y-Flies Skydiving Team, led by
Sara Wright, former YWCA therapist, along with several YWCA
friends, participated in Operation Freefall and raised almost
$1,000 for the YWCA.

their dependent children for up to 15 days.

As part of our community’s response to sexual assault, the
YWCA provides comprehensive, timely and sensitive
medical-forensic examinations on a 24-hour, on-call basis
for females and males 13 years and older.

To strengthen a domestic violence survivor’s ability to
maintain a safe and independent life, the YWCA provides
transitional and long-term housing, employment, advocacy
and legal assistance.

The YWCA’s supervised visitation and exchange program
provides safe, quality parenting time between children
and non-custodial parents for families where domestic
violence, sexual abuse or stalking has been present.
