berries and stone fruits, smoked meat, black pepper and<br />

cedar. Drink this over the next few years, before it loses<br />

Syrah (Paso Robles). This is arguably<br />

one of the best Paso Robles Syrahs ever. Yes, the alcohol<br />

and complex. It’s entirely dry, with blackberry, black<br />

pepper, bacon, cola and sandalwood flavors. Ready to<br />

structure. Drink this over the next six years with rich<br />

Syrah (Santa Barbara County). A very<br />

good Syrah, easily the winery’s best in years. It’s most<br />

notable for the power of its flavors, offering a flood of<br />

The richness is wrapped into firm tannins. With its long<br />

finish, this should provide pleasant drinking over the<br />

County). Dark, big, bold and extracted, this<br />

Syrah has tough tannins that are threaded with intricate<br />

bacon. The astringency will stand up to big, rich roast-<br />

ed and grilled meats, but it doesn’t seem likely to make<br />

The aromas of black pepper and grilled meat<br />

immediately pinpoints this as a cool-climate Syrah, and<br />

quite a good one. It’s dry, rich and smoothly tannic, with<br />

blackberry, blueberry, bacon and smoky cedar flavors.<br />

While it’s asy to drink now, this should hold over the<br />

licorice. The peppery finish will make you want more.<br />

Syrah (Lodi). Michael David makes bombastically<br />

huge wines, but here they’ve mastered the style,<br />

making a black-as-night Syrah true to it’s roots, with flavors<br />

of dark red fruit, bacon and toast, with a wall of<br />

vanilla and oak. It’s juicy, jammy and surprisingly well<br />

integrated, a wine that’s ready to drink now, preferably<br />

with a sizzling tri-tip. —V.B.<br />

(Russian River Valley). Dark, full-bodied<br />

and dry, this Syrah is a bit rustic, with some sharp acidity<br />

show a great deal of complexity, but it’s a solid red wine<br />

for drinking now with hearty meats or stews. —S.H.<br />

being a bit heavy, yeasty and tight. With time, however,<br />
