Optional Literature<br />

Recommendation: Students should accomplish the following objectives<br />

through examining a variety <strong>of</strong> writings, including a<br />

minimum <strong>of</strong> ten poems, five essays, five short stories, two<br />

plays, <strong>and</strong> three novels. Due to the length <strong>of</strong> the reading<br />

component, students may find it advantageous to carry this<br />

course over a period <strong>of</strong> time, while doing other courses. A<br />

writing course may be ideal with this course.<br />

1. Development <strong>of</strong> Literature<br />

1.1 Define literature.<br />

1.2 Outline historical development <strong>of</strong> literature.<br />

1.3 Define myths <strong>and</strong> legends, <strong>and</strong> give examples.<br />

1.4 Describe major genres <strong>of</strong> literature.<br />

2. Essays<br />

2.1 List characteristics <strong>of</strong> essays.<br />

2.2 Distinguish between formal <strong>and</strong> informal essays.<br />

2.3 Classify elements <strong>of</strong> essays.<br />

2.4 Classify writers= methods <strong>of</strong> essay development <strong>and</strong> organization.<br />

3. Short Stories<br />

3.1 List characteristics <strong>of</strong> short stories.<br />

3.2 Identify elements <strong>of</strong> the short story.<br />

3.3 Evaluate these elements in selected short stories.<br />

3.4 List the literary techniques <strong>of</strong> the short story.<br />

3.5 Evaluate these literary techniques in selected short stories.<br />

3.6 Assess authors= methods <strong>of</strong> developing various elements <strong>of</strong> the short stories.<br />

3.7 Analyze selected short stories by relating specific elements <strong>and</strong>/or literary<br />

techniques to overall meaning <strong>and</strong> structure <strong>of</strong> short story.<br />
