Oral Communications<br />

Recommendation: This course may be split into two parts, A <strong>and</strong> B, worth one<br />

credit each. Learners may do Part A only for one credit, or<br />

both for two credits. Learners should show evidence <strong>of</strong><br />

completion <strong>of</strong> the basic skills in Part A before doing Part B.<br />

PART A<br />

1. Basic Concepts <strong>of</strong> Oral Communications<br />

1.1 Identify goals <strong>and</strong> purposes <strong>of</strong> communication.<br />

1.2 Recognize importance <strong>of</strong> communication.<br />

1.3 Identify types <strong>of</strong> communication (verbal, non-verbal).<br />

1.4 Identify mechanics <strong>of</strong> the communication process.<br />

2. Listening Skills<br />

2.1 Distinguish between hearing <strong>and</strong> listening.<br />

2.2 Identify detrimental listening habits.<br />

2.3 Identify types <strong>of</strong> listening (active, passive).<br />

2.4 Identify active listening techniques.<br />

3. Speaking Skills<br />

3.1 Demonstrate self-confidence through group introductions <strong>and</strong> short speeches<br />

about self-attributes <strong>and</strong> interests.<br />

3.2 Apply speaking skills by giving short speeches (announcements, introduction<br />

<strong>of</strong> speakers, thanking speakers, "how to" speeches, impromptu speeches).<br />

4.1 Practice job interviews<br />

5. Group Dynamics<br />

5.1 Identify rules for group participation.<br />

5.2 Participate in group/classroom discussions.<br />
