“I
11
was only eight years old when Whiteface opened,”
said general manager Jay Rand. “I spent most of
my time ski jumping in those days, but I remember
downhill skiing here as a kid. There were only two lifts
and a few trails. Now, after 50 years of operation there
are ten lifts and 77 trails, and Whiteface skiers enjoy the
greatest vertical drop east of the Rocky Mountains.”
On January 25, 1958, Governor Averell Harriman
assembled at the base of Whiteface Mountain in
Wilmington, with other dignitaries for an impressive ribbon-cutting
ceremony to celebrate the opening of the
state’s grandest alpine ski venue, Whiteface Mountain Ski
Center. This special event was particularly gratifying for
the skiers and other outdoor enthusiasts who lobbied for
a “big mountain” in the Lake Placid area for many years.
Ironically, when the athletes competed in the skiing
events at the 1932 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid,
there was only “skiing.” This more closely resembled
cross-country skiing, rather than today’s downhill techniques.
The truth is that many ski enthusiasts doggedly
climbed snowy hills to experience the thrill of skiing
down the trails and open fi elds with their wooden skis
and leather boots. However, the 1932 Olympic ski races
were held on the relatively fl at terrain with some rolling
hills at the Lake Placid Club. Though the tiny village was
surrounded by majestic mountain ranges there was no
“down mountain skiing” as we know it today.
Some of the spectators at the 1932 Winter Olympic
Games returned to their upstate communities full of
enthusiasm for using the snow covered hills and trails for
skiing in their own towns and hamlets. Soon New York
by Ron Farra
State was home to many open ski slopes including those
in Albany, Indian Lake, North Creek, Old Forge, Saratoga
Springs, Saranac, Tupper Lake and Lake Placid. In North
Creek, skiers who arrived on the famous ski trains were
transported uphill in private cars and trucks so they
could schuss down the trails made during the non-snow
months by enterprising townsfolk. The historic “Ride-Up,
Ski-Down Program” for 25 cents per ride continued until
rope tows, T-bars, and J-bars were added at Little Gore
Mountain to carry skiers up the snowy slopes.
After hosting the 1932 Winter Olympic Games, Lake
Placid’s reputation grew as a winter resort and vacation
spot, blessed with the awesome beauty of the Adirondack
Mountains and Whiteface Mountain (elevation 4,867
feet) – the fi fth highest peak in New York State. Alpine
skiing continued to gain popularity as the village hosted
a wide variety of winter sports, meets, competitions, exhibitions
and tournaments. During the 1940s Lake Placid
boasted of three ski slopes with 600 to 700 foot vertical
drops, including Scott’s Cobble, Faun Ridge and Mount
Whitney, as well as a downhill racing trail at Mount Jo.
But the area needed a larger, more challenging ski center
to keep up with the competition from other prestigious
winter resorts like Stowe, Vt., North Conway, N.H., and
Sun Valley, Idaho.
Though it took a legislative amendment and a great
deal of hard work for many ski enthusiasts, the development
of 20 miles of ski trails in the state’s “Forever Wild”
Adirondack Forest Preserve was approved in 1941. But it
would take many years for those trails to be cut.
Initial construction started in 1941 and stopped soon
RUNNING & WALKING
Athlete’s ‘Bucket List’
New Goals to Find the Joy in Your Life
by Laura Clark
hen I joined the Saratoga Stryders
Wrunning club, I was amazed to discover
that fellow club member Bill Taylor
spent a good portion of each New Year’s
Day meticulously plotting out his life for
the next 12 months. Not his work life or
his family life, but his athletic life. While
the rest of us mortals were resolving to eat
one less donut, Bill was adding a positive
spin to the yearly challenge.
While spontaneity is still a big part
of my life, I have come to recognize that
focusing on a new goal defi nitely helps
get me out the door. I know that I have
a tendency to get stuck in a rut, feeling
duty-bound to enter the same events
year after year. But instead of plotting the
same routine on predictable graph paper,
I have learned that it is vital to step out of
that little blue-rimmed square. It doesn’t
have to be a big leap, just a small step into
somewhat unfamiliar territory.
Here are some suggestions to consider
adding to your life list:
“S” Stands for Snow…
Have you noticed that many of the snow
sports also begin with the letter “s”? Take
ski biathlons, snowshoeing, skijoring…
While snowshoeing is rapidly catching on,
skijoring and ski biathlons are still more
popular in Europe than in the United
States. Getting in on the leading edge of
any sport means that until the rest of the
world catches up, even average individuals
have an opportunity to shine.
The sport of snowshoe racing is a great
way to avoid falling off a boring treadmill,
or breaking an ankle on icy roads, plus it
will get you in shape really fast. Ever wonder
why many of the top mountain racers
like Paul Low and Nikki Kimball also
happen to be champion snowshoers? The
reason is that a few months on snowshoes
will develop strong quads and lungs and
place you way ahead of the pack once spring
arrives. To get started, visit the Western
Mass. Athletic Club (runwmac.com) for
events and their SnoNews tips, and Empire
State Snowshoeing (empirestatesnowshoe.
org) for New York happenings.
With the names Fido and Spot giving
way to Finn and Sophie as pets are awarded
family member status, attendance at
dog obedience school is as obligatory as
three walks a day. But what if you and your
pet want to break out of the mold? Simply
try skijoring by trading your sneakers for
cross-country skis and your dog’s leash
for a skijor halter. Skijoring requires intuitive
cooperation between interspecies
team members and is best approached
with a few starter lessons. For instruction
and advice on reliable gear, contact
Garnet Hill Lodge (garnet-hill.com) in
North River, Salmon Hills (salmonhills.
com) in Redfi eld, and the Olympic Sports
Complex (whitefacelakeplacid.com) in
Lake Placid. Also, check out rundawgrun.
com, adirondackskidog.com and skijornow.com,
and the books Skijor with Your
Dog by Mari Hoe-Raitto and Ski Spot Run
by Matt Haakenstad.
For biathlon, the Saratoga Biathlon
Club in Day (saratogabiathlon.20m.com)
offers a convenient location to practice
snow skills. The club exists in a magic
area where snow falls early and stays late
despite what it is doing in the rest of the
Capital Region. For an inexpensive membership
fee, you get unlimited use of challenging
groomed trails. You will be welcomed
by Jim and Betty Schreiner, who
host ski, snowshoe and running biathlons
year-round. Just arrive an hour before
any of their events, check out a loaner
rifl e and learn the basics. For info on the
Tower Climbing…
Looking for a sport that will impress your
friends but requires less time to complete
than your average 5K race? Try tower (or
stair) climbing. There are two events in
Albany, the 20th annual Corning Tower
Stair Climb (cff.org) on February 7, and
the inaugural Climb UAlbany (alanys.org) in
the 22-story Colonial Tower on March 29.
Runners are sent off in waves, avoiding
the ping-pong effect of a mass-start
up a narrow stairwell. At last year’s 42story
Corning Tower race, I won my age
group in a respectable 9:11, coming off
a strong snowshoe season with little
actual stair practice. I also discovered the
“climber’s hack” wheezing and coughing
experienced afterwards, however it’s really
no big deal since it doesn’t affect your
race. For a list of climbs worldwide, go to
towerrunning.com.
Climb Another Mountain…
The 13th annual USATF-New England
Mountain Running Circuit (usatfne.
org) takes the children’s song, The Bear
Went Over the Mountain, to new heights
with six mountain challenges. The series
begins in late May and continues through
the middle of June. USATF members who
complete all six events receive a coveted
Mountain Goat T-shirt and a lottery
bypass for the Mount Washington Road
Race on June 21. Obviously, it takes a good
deal of stamina to run all the way up any
mountain and many folks power hike the
steepest sections. This quest is an ideal
follow-up for those coming off a strong
ski or snowshoe season and surprisingly,
easier on the joints than a “normal” race.
Best of all, running up a mountain never
fails to impress fl at 5K devotees.
“The Streak…”
Runners in pursuit of the streak are often
regarded with a mixture of envy and consternation.
As defi ned by the United States
Running Streak Association (runeveryday.
com), a streak involves running at least
one continuous mile every day. While
maintaining a streak will get you out the
door, this is often not a good thing to do
when sick or injured.
However, there are more inventive and
potentially doable streaks just waiting for
anyone with a little imagination. You could
aspire to complete all the races in a series,
like the Mountain Running Circuit or the
Albany Running Exchange’s fourth annual
free Summer Trail Run Series (albanyrunningexchange.org)
on Thursdays from
late May through August.
Some events like the WMAC Snowshoe
Series also acknowledge “points” leaders.
Theoretically, the headliners would be bigname
stars whom you could never beat
in a thousand years. But think again! The
big stars often have other, more lucrative
commitments, and might make only one
or two of the series races, leaving room for
you – especially if you’re a female. Last year,
I was second female points leader despite
the fact that I mostly fi nished on the bottom
half of the race results. Sometimes it
pays just to show up!
Another possibility is to join The
Adirondack Runners (adirondackrunners.
com) and enter their Mileage High Club,
where members are invited to pursue a
yearly mileage goal that is both doable
and somewhat challenging. All who
achieve their goal receive certifi cates,
with the possibility of earning patches at
signifi cant milestones. Mileage is tracked
quarterly in the club newsletter for all
to see, if you so desire, which defi nitely
serves as good motivation.
For inspiration, here are three books
to consider reading: Long Distance: A Year
of Living Strenuously by Bill McKibben;
Over the Edge: A Regular Guy’s Odyssey
in Extreme Sports by Michael Bane; and
To the Edge: A Man, Death Valley and the
Mystery of Endurance by Kirk Johnson.
Once you get started on your quest,
New Year’s resolution time will become
an occasion for revitalization rather than
dread. There is an endless parade of possibilities
to add to your life list from running
a marathon in every state, to competing
in a 24-hour relay race, to giving back
by volunteering at an event. Whatever
new path you choose, know that you will
return both refreshed and reenergized.
SWIMMING
BILATERAL BREATHING
From: Donal Fagan
Date: January 29, 2008 11:40am
Last week, while I was doing the 5 x 50
freestyle, I happened to switch between
“breathe alternate sides” and “25 breathe
left, 25 breathe right.” Though I swam with
the same effort, breathe alternate sides was
always a few seconds faster.
From: Grant Hall
Date: January 29, 2008 12:07pm
This is still true for me as well. My conclusion
has been that I have still not completely
mastered a perfectly executed, seamless
breath.
From: Richard Skerrett
Date: January 29, 2008 12:23pm
In my limited experience, I would say
that while breathing alternate sides is highly
benefi cial, breathing to one side on odd
lengths and the other side on even lengths
may be even better. Further, although I
haven’t established it with certainty I think
that I swim better breathing to the “wrong”
side. Perhaps not faster yet, but with a more
effi cient stroke. I must do some timed tests
to compare them.
From: Donal Fagan
Date: January 29, 2008 1:26pm
I did some timed 500s a few years ago.
Even though I feel better breathing left,
or alternating breathing side by 25, I was
fastest breathing exclusively to the right. I
never timed alternate breathing for a full
500, though. I’ve only managed that once
or twice.
From: Terry Laughlin
Date: January 29, 2008 10:49pm
This is an excellent series of observations
on the different choices one has for breathing
bilaterally. My introduction to bilateral
breathing came after I had “retired” from
competitive swimming at age 21 to begin
coaching.
On my fi rst practice as a coach, I noticed
that nearly my entire team of 15 college
men had lopsided strokes. The left-breathers
swung wider on recovery on the left side
and the right-hand stroke crossed the centerline.
The right-breathers did the opposite.
After pondering what I’d seen that evening,
I decided to experiment with “wrong side
breathing” the next day.
The next day I instructed the team to
breathe on their less natural side throughout
our 800-yard warm-up. Instantly nearly
everyone was far more symmetrical in their
stroking. Being a new coach, I wasn’t exactly
sure why or what the effect of that might
be, but I was pretty sure that “practicing
symmetry” would be good for their swimming.
Thirty-fi ve years later, I’m also pretty
sure that most probably felt awkward and
swam slower during that warm-up though
they looked better. From that day I became
a believer in bilateral breathing during practice
though I didn’t insist on it during races.
I was still swimming a bit myself at
that time (I didn’t resume regular training
for another 17 years) and I began breathing
alternate sides. Breathing to the right
felt awkward, but I kept at it. For the next
25 years my bilateral breathing was mostly
alternate sides – every 3, 5 or 7 strokes.
As I approached my 50th birthday, I
became dissatisfi ed with the fact that my
right-hand catch never felt as good as my left.
I understood why. For my fi rst ten years of
swimming, a period when I gave little thought
to technique, I’d developed many bad habits.
Several – poor alignment and “collapsing
catch” on my right side – were related to my
being a left-breather. My other side had never
developed bad habits so it was “virgin.”
In my late 40s I decided to breathe mostly
to my right for a year or two, to somewhat
compensate for breathing exclusively left for
my fi rst 10 years as a swimmer. It was challenging
at fi rst, because it felt unnatural.
Breathing alternate sides, even for 20-plus
years, had not exposed me to the sense of
full-time awkwardness one gets from breathing
hundreds of times in a row to one’s less
natural side. But my alignment and catch on
both sides were unquestionably better when
I breathed only to the right.
Consequently I had immediate, measurable
gains in effi ciency, taking one less
stroke-per-length in 25-yard pools and two
to three less in 50-meter pools. I didn’t time
myself too much in the beginning, but I was
probably a bit slower.
I was comfortable with what I was sure
would be a temporary sacrifi ce in speed,
because concentrated right-breathing
seemed the only way to reeducate my right
hand to an effective catch. Which is precisely
what occurred – my right hand is still not
quite as “patient” as my left, but it’s dramatically
better than before.
I take an estimated half-million freestyle
strokes a year. A quarter-million of those
strokes – all those I take with my right hand
– feel markedly more effective now than
eight years ago because I spent a year or two
breathing mainly to my right, followed over
the past six years, taking a roughly equal
number of breaths to each side.
30th
Anniversary!
PHOTO COURTESY OF TOTAL IMMERSION SWIMMING
This year I’ve resumed breathing more
often to the left, my original side. Why?
Because I’m still unquestionably faster when I
breathe left, but after so many years of “remedial”
breathing I’m now a much more effi cient
swimmer whichever side I breathe on.
Try These Exercises in “Examined”
Bilateral Breathing
Swim three rounds of “4 x 50” freestyle. Rest
for fi ve or more deep, slow “cleansing” breaths
between 50s – or choose an interval that
allows at least 15 seconds recovery between
50s. Rest for a minute between rounds.
In each round, swim one 50 of each: breathe
to your left for the entire 50; breathe to your
right for the entire 50; breathe to your left for
25 and your right for 25; and breathe bilaterally
(every three strokes) for the entire 50.
On the fi rst round just count strokes for
each 50. On the second round, time yourself
for each 50. On the third round, calculate
your Swim Golf score for each 50 (add
strokes + time in seconds).
Are you more effi cient (fewer strokes) with
one breathing pattern than others? Are you
faster with one breathing pattern than others?
Are you more effective (lower golf score) with
one breathing pattern than others?
ATHLETE PROFILE
Mary Duprey
by Shannon Brescher Shea
Speaking to Mary Duprey, most people
would not guess that she is a competitive
athlete, much less a highly successful one.
She rarely talks about her cycling victories or
impressive number of wins. But when she
reaches the starting line, her competitors
don’t even have time to realize how formidable
she is before she disappears from sight.
But Mary was not always a dominant
force. Rather, she was far less active and
healthy in her early 20s than she is now.
“I used to smoke cigarettes, drink a lot of
alcohol,” she said. “Then I decided I needed
to get my stuff together.”
Cycling attracted her as an activity, so
she decided it might be the right thing to
get her life in gear. Liking the freedom of
the bicycle, she started competing in local
time trial events and soon “fell in love with
[it].” Participating in these rides awakened
Mary’s inner athlete. “I think it’s just the
drive that I had,” she said. “If I am going to
do something, I’m going to go all out.”
As her dedication grew, she quickly
became known in the area’s athletic scene.
She lives in Rouses Point, near the New
York/Canadian border, but participates in
events throughout the region. Upon a fellow
rider’s recommendation, a leader of a
local kayak triathlon team called her one
day, and said, “I heard you were a good
cyclist. Do you want to be on the team?”
Although Mary had never met the caller,
she readily accepted the invitation. Mary
has participated every year since then
in The Great Race triathlon each July, a
3.1-mile run, 12-mile –bike, and 3-mile
canoe/kayak event in St. Albans Bay, Vt.
TRIATHLON – FIRST PLACE IN WOMENS’
KAYAK DIVISION
Mary’s reputation has only continued
to expand since then, both as a cyclist
and kayak triathlete. Testifying to her
toughness, fellow athlete Clyde Yarnell of
Essex, Vt., commented that not only does
she win the women’s events, but regularly
beats many of the top men. Describing the
men at The Great Race triathlon, he said,
“They can compare their times only by
how many minutes Mary had beat them
by. That’s pretty impressive. ‘Mary’s only
beat me by two minutes this year… Mary’s
only beat me by one minute this year…’”
Mary’s winning has inspired her to
tackle new challenges. “She wins a lot,
no question. But I think she is probably
satisfi ed to compete well,” said Don West
of [to be determined], who participates
in bicycle time trial races with her. “She
won’t just stay home where she knows
she can win.” Mary has competed as far
away as Puerto Rico, and even brought
her bicycle to Ireland on a business trip
so that she could train.
In September 2007, Mary topped even
herself with her result in the Josh Billings
RunAground triathlon, a 27-mile bike,
fi ve-mile canoe/kayak, and six-mile run
event in Lenox, Mass. Even though it
was her fi rst time competing individually,
she set a new women’s record by
over fi ve minutes. “That is a huge time,”
Clyde said, emphasizing that it included
Age: 48
Family: Husband, Gerry;
Step-Daughters,
Karen, 36, Shelley, 34;
Daughters, Lauren, 25,
Tori, 14
Residence: Rouses Point
Occupation: Quality Assurance
Manager, Wyeth
Pharmaceuticals
Sport: Bicycling; Kayak/Canoe
Triathlon (Kayak or
Canoe/Bike/Run)
all ages. Mary described it as her proudest
moment yet, commenting, “I was just
really pleased with myself that I was able
to do that.” The Josh Billings triathlon is
especially challenging as it begins with a
mass bicycle start of over 500 cyclists.
However, Mary has never been content
to fall back on her accomplishments.
Don, who met her over 20 years ago,
recalled her reluctance to enter bike/run
events. “She said, ‘Oh, I can’t run.’ Within
a year or two, she just started running,” he
said. Now, she often wins her age group
for the running portion of multisport
events. Similarly, she recently registered
for the Tupper Lake Tinman Triathlon, a
1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike, and 13.1mile
run event on June 29, 2008, although
she doesn’t consider herself a swimmer.
“I’m going to learn how to swim in the
next fi ve months,” she said. “It excites me.
I guess I have a fear of water – so I think
I’m doing it just to overcome the fear.” She
hopes that once she completes this halfironman
she may be able to tackle the
Ironman USA Lake Placid triathlon (July
20, 2008) in a future year.
Despite her success, Mary rarely speaks
about her triumphs. Instead, she is known
for her quiet modesty, allowing her victories
to speak for her. “What’s the most amazing
to see is that she’s such a pleasant person,”
Clyde said. “You wouldn’t even know she’s
a top-notch athlete. You never know until
she gets on the bike and she gets her game
face.” Similarly, Don said, “She doesn’t
boast... Just does it quietly and lets it go.
She’s not in it for recognition.”
Rather than touting her accomplishments,
Mary works hard to share her dedication
to sports with her family. Although
she fi rst met her husband, Gerry, through
work, it was their running that brought
them together. They both worked the second
shift, ending at 1am. “When you’re
done at one o’clock in the morning,
you’re usually not ready to go home and
go sleep,” she said. Instead of retreating to
bed, some of the employees would go out
for very early morning runs. In that group,

Mary and Gerry connected, running under
the streetlights in the quiet night streets.
Now, Mary balances her priorities
by involving her family in her activities.
Much of the time, her family acts as her
support crew, which Mary said is “actually
sometimes harder than doing the event.”
Describing Mary and her husband, Don
said, “They’re really a unit… They take up
the slack for each other.” For example, Gerry
often acts as a timer for the weekly time trials
that Mary participates in and organizes.
In addition to acting as Mary’s crew
and cheering section, her family often
takes part in the events. Last August, Mary
and Gerry competed in the 17-mile Herc
Speed Hiking Competition (with 6,678foot
elevation gain/loss) at Sugarbush
Resort in Warren, Vt., which Gerry
described as “just the toughest thing I’ve
ever seen.” To involve, Tori, her teenage
daughter, in her activities, Mary bought a
tandem bike. Mother, father, and daughter
form a team for The Great Race triathlon
with Mary kayaking, Gerry running,
and Gerry and Tori cycling together.
Recently, Mary has built upon her
experience in the sporting world to
reach out to non-athletes. Seeing her
self-described “passion for fi tness,” her
employers at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals
asked her if she would act as the fi tness
center manager. In this position, Mary
has organized employee challenges and
established an indoor walking path.
A natural outgrowth of this job has
been Mary’s participation in the American
Heart Association’s “Go Red for Women”
outreach program. After an organizational
representative helped the center
start a walking program, Mary decided to
join the Plattsburgh chapter. “Our goal is
to bring awareness to women and to men
that heart disease is actually the number
one killer of women in America,” she said.
The group recently held its inaugural Go
Red for Women Breakfast, a well-attended
educational event and plans to hold
another one next year.
The cause is especially close to Mary,
because she suffers from high blood pressure
herself. “It was hard for me to believe I
had high blood pressure,” she said. “I actually
fought it for a couple of years.” Although
she understands how some women wish
to ignore the issue, she believes raising
awareness of heart disease is essential. “It’s
very preventable,” she said.
Since the signs of a heart attack differ
between men and women, a large part of
her campaign focuses on raising awareness
of these signals. She said that unlike
men, women sometimes experience pain
under their tongue or in their stomach.
She encourages women to make a healthy
diet and fi tness routine priorities in their
lives. “It’s a woman’s tendency to take care
of everyone else fi rst,” she said. “You need to
take the time to take care of yourself.”
No matter what the challenge, Mary
Duprey has found new ways to harness
her zeal for exercise, leading to success
as an athlete and inspiration to others.
CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING & SNOWSHOEING
PEAKED MOUNTAIN:
A Short Winter
Challenge
eaked Mountain Pond has become
a very popular fi shing, hiking, and
camping destination, and of course
it is an outstanding snowshoe destination.
This gem of a lake in the shadow of its
own rock-covered peak is most attractive.
Peaked Mountain is the imposing cone
that rises above it. When seen in profi le,
it appears to be half spruce, half rock. It
is the most distinctive of the rock-scarred
mountains northwest of Thirteenth Lake,
and it is the only one with a trail. The hike
to the pond is a moderately diffi cult winter
trek, and a scenic hike in its own right.
The steepness of Peaked Mountain makes
it more challenging, but not unattainable.
Be wary of icy conditions, however.
Getting There
Access to the lake is by way of
Thirteenth Lake Road, which leaves NY
28 0.5 mile west of North River. It heads
west and south, beside Thirteenth Brook,
through Christian Hill, to a fork 3.5 miles
from NY 28. The left, east, road goes to Old
Farm Clearing and Garnet Hill Lodge, so
take the right fork, Beach Road. It deadends
at a parking lot located about 200
yards from Thirteenth Lake. There are
four designated campsites (with associated
privies) between here and the lake.
The Trail
Follow the main trail through the camping
area to the shore. Here, winter hikers
have two options: striking out across the
frozen surface of Thirteenth Lake, or following
the red-marked hiking trail to the
right—a rugged route that is quite scenic
but also quite rugged. Either way, the view
up Thirteenth Lake to the mountainous
interior of the Siamese Ponds Wilderness
is one I can never pass without pausing to
enjoy. It makes me wish I was born with
four legs and fur, so that I might be permitted
to take up permanent residence in
a country such as that.
If you are crossing the ice, look for
the mouth of Peaked Mountain Brook.
The hiking trail turns inland at this point,
although from the lake you will need to
make your own way to it. The trail leads
uphill, close to the brook on its north side.
Look for the red markers of a newly designated
trail leading across the brook at the
top of the fi rst cascade, 1 trail mile from
the parking area; it leads to Hour Pond
and its new lean-to.
Continuing beside the brook, the trail
climbs steeply at fi rst, then more gently,
until at 0.8 mile from the lake you cross
the brook on an ice bridge or by hopping
rocks. Shortly beyond, you approach the
vly, and then swings to the north side of
the second beaver meadow. This zigzag is
not shown on topographic maps, so be on
the lookout if you are breaking your own
trail through the winter woods.
The trail leads around this meadow
and back to the south side of the brook,
where you continue to the third vly, over
which you see Peaked Mountain for
the fi rst time. The mountain’s “sudden”
appearance is a highlight of the trip. The
trail, sparsely marked, winds around huge
boulders (one of which is tipped onto
another to form a curious shelter) and up
into the woods.
The trail leads over a ridge to reach
the outlet of Peaked Mountain Pond at 3
miles. White birches stand out from the
hillside above, pointing to the soft grey
rock outcrops that lead to the summit
of Peaked Mountain. There is a campsite
along the south shore with an outstanding
view of the mountain.
The continuing trail crosses the outlet
of Peaked Mountain Pond, heading
around the east shore through birch-fi lled
woods. At the top of one rocky step, look
for a side path leading left to a campsite
by the water. The trail next points across
a shallow draw at the northeast corner of
the pond, where you head straight up the
steep fl ank of the mountain in a northerly
direction.
Peaked Mountain is a short but challenging
climb, especially in winter. You
will definitely need snowshoes with
aggressive crampons, for the way is steep
and there will be several ledges to scramble
over. In the summer, you will fi nd the
tread to be eroded to bedrock in places.
After scrambling around a rock ledge and
pushing through a narrow tree-lined passage,
you emerge on an outcrop with the
fi rst view of the pond below.
The trail now angles left, away from
the cliffs, and zigzags back to the tip of the
tiny cone that is the summit of the mountain,
0.8 mile beyond the pond and 660
feet above it. There are views west to the
mountains beyond Indian Lake. From the
edge of the cliff you look across to Slide
Mountain and back along the long chain
of vlies the trail follows along Peaked
Mountain Brook. Gore Mountain fi lls the
southeast horizon, while the High Peaks
are visible beyond Ruby, Davis, and Casey
mountains to the north.
began full-time operation in 1951 with
fi ve rope tows and a 3,350-foot T-bar lift.
Transportation by Sno-Cat or truck cost
$1.15 per ride, rope tow rides were $1.50 per
day, and the T-bar was $4 for 20 rides. Due
to the unchallenging terrain and primitive
operations, Lake Placid remained an afterthought
destination to skiers and Marble
Mountain was eventually abandoned.
In 1957, Gov. Harriman, an avid skier
who had built Sun Valley in the 1930s,
signed a law authorizing development
of the present Whiteface Mountain Ski
Center. It opened in 1958 with two chair
lifts and a vertical drop of 3,216 feet, the
longest in the East.
“I patrolled at Marble Mountain,”
remembers 70-year-old Jim Hoyt of Lake
Placid. “I moved to the new Whiteface
Mountain Ski Center weeks before it
opened to help prepare for safe skiing
and I have patrolled there ever since,” said
Jim. He was named “King of Winter” and
received a lifetime achievement award
at the 50th anniversary celebration on
January 25, 2008. A trail to be called
“Hoyt’s High” will be named in his honor
with Whiteface’s expansion onto Lookout
Mountain for the 2008-09 season.
By the time the 1980 Winter Olympic
Games were held in Lake Placid, there
PHOTOS COURTESY OF ORDA/WHITEFACE
was a big mountain and downhill skiing
was king. The 3,009-meter course for the
men’s downhill races was considered one
of the best in world-class skiing competition.
“Since then, Whiteface has hosted a
wide variety of state, national and international
events including World Cup alpine
and freestyle skiing and snowboarding,”
said Sandy Caligiore, spokesman for the
Olympic Regional Development Authority.
“The people of Lake Placid and
Wilmington and all the leaders who
worked so long and hard to bring big
mountain skiing to the region are justifi
ably proud of Whiteface Mountain and
being the winter sports capital of the
world,” Sandy said.
If alpine skiing had been an Olympic
sport, it is doubtful Lake Placid would
have hosted the 1932 Games. And if not
for Whiteface, Lake Placid would not have
hosted the 1980 Games and the current
sports scene would not be what it is today.
Happy anniversary Whiteface! Who
knows, there may be another celebration
in 2009 to honor the 60th anniversary of
Whiteface at Marble Mountain.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Asian Longhorned
Beetle Cooperative Eradication Program reports that moving
firewood can spread tree-killing invasive diseases and insect pests
like the Asian longhorned beetle (ALB). Already, the ALB is
responsible for the loss of more than 42,000 trees in New York,
New Jersey, and Illinois.
Stop the Beetle! Buy and use firewood locally.
Don’t transport it.
And remember, officials survey trees for signs of beetle
infestation year ’round and may be in your area. For answers
concerning surveys, wood movement, or suspected signs
of beetle infestation, call the Asian Longhorned Beetle
Cooperative Eradication Program.
In New York, call 1–877–STOP–ALB or 1–866–265–0301.
In New Jersey and on Staten Island, call 1–732–815–4700.
Log onto http://www.aphis.usda.gov/ALB.
The Asian Longhorned Beetle Cooperative Eradication Program is comprised of
the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service and Forest Service, joined
in New York by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, the
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and the New York City
Department of Parks and Recreation. The USDA agencies are joined in New Jersey
by the New Jersey Department of Agriculture, the New Jersey Department of
Environmental Protection, and the City of Linden.
