he “Società dell’Acqua Pia Antica Marcia” was established in the middle XIX century, with the
intention of bringing the ancient Acqua Marcia back to Rome. The Marcian aqueduct, connected to
Rome in 144 B.C. by the magistrate Quintus Marcius Rex and considered the best supply of the city
for the high quality of its waters, was interrupted during the invasion of the Goths (537-538 A.D.),
together with other water ducts. From that time, Rome was without channelled water for about eight
centuries. In 1868, the “Anglo Romana Water Company”, subsequently named “Società Anonima
dell’Acqua Marcia”, became the “Società dell’Acqua Pia Antica Marcia”. This name was a tribute to
Pope Pio IX, whose economic intervention was of fundamental importance to realize this work.
On 10 September 1870, the first Acqua Marcia jet of water gushed out into today’s Piazza della
Repubblica. With more than 140 years of history, today Acqua Marcia is the oldest Italian real estate
company.
The adventure of Acqua Marcia in the tourist sector began in 1998, through its subsidiary Acqua
Marcia Turismo (AMT). Today, the Acqua Marcia Group owns six important historical residences in
Sicily: Grand Hotel Villa Igiea , Grand Hotel et des Palmes, and Excelsior Hilton Hotel in Palermo;
San Domenico Palace Hotel in Taormina; Excelsior Grand Hotel in Catania; Des Etrangers Hotel & SPA
