esearch aims at <strong>for</strong>mulat<strong>in</strong>g a VDS <strong>framework</strong> <strong>for</strong> implement<strong>in</strong>g<br />

technology <strong>in</strong> <strong>design</strong> education <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UAE, and due to <strong>the</strong> cultural<br />

similarities between <strong>the</strong> UAE and o<strong>the</strong>r countries <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region, this<br />

study can be confidently applied <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r countries <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region to obta<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> same results.<br />

5.12 Methods <strong>of</strong> Phase 1<br />

5.12.1 Data Collection Methods and Instruments <strong>in</strong> Phase 1<br />

Secondary data collection method<br />

Secondary research uses all sort <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation that has been collected<br />

from various resources such as literature reviews, <strong>in</strong>ternet sources,<br />

published materials, broadcast media, and o<strong>the</strong>r non-human sources.<br />

This type <strong>of</strong> research does not <strong>in</strong>volve human subjects. The data is<br />

extracted from various journals, articles, and books. The criteria <strong>for</strong><br />

selection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> literature are relevant to <strong>the</strong> research topic and <strong>the</strong> year<br />

<strong>of</strong> publication. The university library was visited to acquire <strong>the</strong> data.<br />

Onl<strong>in</strong>e searches were also conducted. Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> onl<strong>in</strong>e database<br />

that was accessed us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>dit l<strong>in</strong>k on <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Glamorgan<br />

website <strong>in</strong>cluded e-database, e-journals and e-books facilities. Some <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> keywords used to conduct <strong>the</strong> search were: United Arab Emirates,<br />

Architectural Education, Technology, Innovation, Teach<strong>in</strong>g Methods,<br />

Architecture Design Education, Design Education and Technology etc.<br />

The UAEU curriculum analysis document was also reviewed. 269 The<br />

needs analysis aimed to at identify <strong>the</strong> needs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> UAE society <strong>in</strong><br />

terms <strong>of</strong> appropriate skills development and <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> technology <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

educational system and ways <strong>for</strong> improvement, as well as identify<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

UAE‟s mission <strong>for</strong> development and <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> technology <strong>in</strong><br />

education. The <strong>in</strong>vestigation also revealed <strong>the</strong> construction boom <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

UAE and <strong>the</strong> high concern at this stage <strong>of</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> country‟s<br />

<strong>in</strong>frastructure. In addition it showed <strong>the</strong> UAE‟s government concern<br />
