research is to <strong>for</strong>mulate a <strong>framework</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegrat<strong>in</strong>g VDS <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />

architectural <strong>design</strong> education <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> UAE. There<strong>for</strong>e, compared to<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r studies <strong>the</strong> aim is not to evaluate and analyse exit<strong>in</strong>g practice. 248<br />

The aim is to <strong>in</strong>troduce a new practice that did not exist be<strong>for</strong>e. Us<strong>in</strong>g<br />

action research helps <strong>in</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> right decision on <strong>the</strong> specifications<br />

and <strong>the</strong> tools <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> new <strong>framework</strong>.<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to Lew<strong>in</strong> 249 action research is pursued with iterative cycles <strong>of</strong><br />

“plan-act-observe-reflect”. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, Elliot 250 highlighted <strong>the</strong> basic<br />

cycle <strong>of</strong> action research <strong>in</strong> Lew<strong>in</strong>‟s <strong>model</strong> as<br />

“identify<strong>in</strong>g a general idea, reconnaissance, general plann<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

develop<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> first action step, implement<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> first action step,<br />

evaluation, revis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> general plan and from <strong>the</strong>re <strong>the</strong> researcher <strong>the</strong>n<br />

spirals <strong>in</strong>to develop<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> second action step, <strong>implementation</strong>,<br />

evaluation, revis<strong>in</strong>g general plan, develop<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> third action step,<br />

<strong>implementation</strong>, evaluation and <strong>the</strong> loop goes on”.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> light <strong>of</strong> action research def<strong>in</strong>ition and procedures identified <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

literature this research adopted an action research <strong>design</strong> as stated<br />

above. Figure 5.1 illustrates <strong>the</strong> research <strong>design</strong> developed <strong>for</strong> this<br />
