properly <strong>in</strong>tegrate technology <strong>in</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g and facilitat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se <strong>design</strong><br />

<strong>studio</strong> courses. This work aims at <strong>for</strong>mulat<strong>in</strong>g a <strong>framework</strong> <strong>for</strong><br />

implement<strong>in</strong>g technology <strong>in</strong> architecture <strong>design</strong> education which makes<br />

it valuable <strong>for</strong> both streams <strong>of</strong> <strong>design</strong> education <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UAE that are<br />

described above. The <strong>framework</strong> will also potentially benefit any <strong>design</strong>-<br />

led curriculum <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UAE and Gulf region.<br />

4.4 Conclusion<br />

This chapter summarised <strong>the</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g and learn<strong>in</strong>g methods <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UAE<br />

Higher Educational <strong>in</strong>stitutes. It also showed how <strong>the</strong> methods are<br />

based on teacher-centred styles <strong>in</strong> opposition to <strong>the</strong> desired student-<br />

centred styles that are recommended by learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>orists. The chapter<br />

specifically considered architecture education <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UAE, <strong>in</strong>troduc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> universities that house schools <strong>of</strong> architecture and architectural<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g department, and discusses specifically <strong>the</strong> <strong>design</strong> curricula<br />

as practised <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UAE, aim<strong>in</strong>g at highlight<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir weakness and<br />

<strong>in</strong>troduc<strong>in</strong>g ways <strong>of</strong> improvement <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> future to meet <strong>the</strong> required<br />

standard. This review <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>med <strong>the</strong> prelim<strong>in</strong>ary field work and <strong>the</strong><br />

identification <strong>of</strong> potential partners <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> test<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>implementation</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> VDS.<br />
