А common education <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first three years <strong>of</strong> а bachelor programme <strong>of</strong><br />
environmental <strong>design</strong> will connect <strong>the</strong> th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> tomorrow's<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essionals who understand <strong>the</strong> need <strong>for</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegrated <strong>design</strong> and<br />
plann<strong>in</strong>g along with а genu<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>teraction between <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essions.<br />
Perhaps, eventually, with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> context <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> UAE as an example <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Gulf region, it seems reasonable to argue that well-mannered, carefully<br />
proportioned and simply-styled build<strong>in</strong>gs exhibit<strong>in</strong>g due<br />
acknowledgement <strong>of</strong> appropriate environmental, cultural, and<br />
technological considerations should be <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>imum standard <strong>of</strong><br />
architecture delivered to clients by tomorrow's architects and<br />
contractors. In turn, civic spaces can emulate successful <strong>in</strong>teriors by<br />
becom<strong>in</strong>g environmentally reassur<strong>in</strong>g sett<strong>in</strong>gs that people actually want<br />
to experience. Hence, emerge <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> pay<strong>in</strong>g great attention<br />
to <strong>design</strong> at <strong>the</strong> front end stage where most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>novative and<br />
creative ideas emerge and collaborated.<br />
It was found <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> exploratory survey 149 conducted by <strong>the</strong> researcher <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> UAE that <strong>design</strong> courses <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UAE are usually taught by less<br />
experienced <strong>in</strong>structors. Consider<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> time-consum<strong>in</strong>g nature <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>se courses, usually most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> practical work is done <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>studio</strong> by<br />
<strong>the</strong> student, <strong>in</strong>deed <strong>the</strong>se courses are usually tutored by mature student<br />
undertak<strong>in</strong>g higher degrees <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> university than <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>structors<br />
<strong>the</strong>mselves. It was also observed that <strong>the</strong> courses are taught us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />
traditional <strong>for</strong>m where <strong>the</strong> students ga<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>design</strong> <strong>studio</strong> room and<br />
spend hours sketch<strong>in</strong>g manually or us<strong>in</strong>g CAD programs that <strong>the</strong>y have<br />
been taught <strong>in</strong> previous traditional courses. Students work separately<br />
on <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>design</strong>s and rarely communicate until <strong>the</strong> <strong>design</strong> is f<strong>in</strong>ished.<br />
Even though <strong>the</strong> UAE‟s school system <strong>design</strong> is taught from <strong>the</strong> first<br />
year <strong>of</strong> study to <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al year (see Appendix A) most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g<br />
concentrates on <strong>the</strong> students‟ use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tools <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> specific technology<br />
ra<strong>the</strong>r than teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m on how to utilise it to produce creative<br />
<strong>design</strong>s. It was also observed that <strong>the</strong> students spend long hours <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
149 Al-Ali, A. I. (2007). ‘Read<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> technology via VDS: <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United Arab Emirates’.<br />
