Her <strong>in</strong>terest lies <strong>in</strong> understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> morphology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city as a result <strong>of</strong> many<br />

different layers <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terventions through time and how economics, specific<br />

events and culture has determ<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> urban fabric and its trans<strong>for</strong>mations.<br />

Through <strong>design</strong>, she explores <strong>the</strong> relationships between <strong>the</strong> spatiality <strong>of</strong> a<br />

location and <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>habitation and social <strong>in</strong>teraction and how <strong>the</strong> physicality <strong>of</strong> a<br />

location encourages <strong>in</strong>habitation enabl<strong>in</strong>g social relations trans<strong>for</strong>m<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

location <strong>in</strong>to a place and a neighbourhood <strong>in</strong>to a community.<br />

In particular she is fasc<strong>in</strong>ated with <strong>the</strong> shift between public and private doma<strong>in</strong>s<br />

<strong>in</strong> cities. These two doma<strong>in</strong>s are sometimes def<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> ownership, use,<br />

management, appropriation or o<strong>the</strong>rs. Her research aims to establish a<br />

representation system <strong>in</strong> accordance with <strong>the</strong> complexity <strong>of</strong> urban boundaries.<br />

This would be based on and <strong>in</strong>fluenced by <strong>the</strong> approaches to <strong>the</strong> subject <strong>of</strong><br />

authors such as Meleau-Ponty, Sennet, Trías, Heidegger, Land, Seamon and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs. Part <strong>of</strong> her methodology relies on <strong>the</strong> understand<strong>in</strong>g and exploration <strong>of</strong><br />

exist<strong>in</strong>g studies <strong>of</strong> boundaries <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> discipl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> architecture and <strong>the</strong> translation<br />

<strong>of</strong> this knowledge <strong>in</strong>to urban boundaries.<br />

Student Pr<strong>of</strong>iles<br />

The <strong>studio</strong> attracted an array <strong>of</strong> students (aged between 20-30) world-wide from<br />

Tokyo, Ch<strong>in</strong>a, Europe and Australia from a wide spectrum <strong>of</strong> academic discipl<strong>in</strong>es.<br />

The featured degree discipl<strong>in</strong>es were not only expected, mandatory Architecture<br />

and Urban Plann<strong>in</strong>g based, but spanned from Landscape Plann<strong>in</strong>g to Exhibition<br />

Design; from Graphic Media and Textile Design to Ceramics and Product Design.<br />

The dynamic <strong>of</strong> multi-discipl<strong>in</strong>es and diversity <strong>of</strong> backgrounds and ages <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

students and staff enriched <strong>the</strong> Porosity experience and bolstered creativity<br />

amongst <strong>the</strong> participants.<br />

Six Zones<br />

As part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Porosity Studio’s aim to immerse <strong>the</strong> students <strong>in</strong> Cardiff’s history<br />

and <strong>in</strong>frastructure, <strong>the</strong> participants were required to produce two m<strong>in</strong>ute<br />

presentations regard<strong>in</strong>g at least one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> zones visited dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> tour. Here, <strong>the</strong><br />

research was cited ra<strong>the</strong>r than expla<strong>in</strong>ed and <strong>the</strong> presentations were delivered<br />

with clarity and academic precision.<br />

Be<strong>for</strong>e <strong>the</strong> tour, <strong>the</strong> students were <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>med that Cardiff has two centres: <strong>the</strong> city<br />

centre and <strong>the</strong> bay, both <strong>of</strong> which are <strong>in</strong>tensely developed. Between <strong>the</strong> two<br />

centres are <strong>the</strong> older residential areas and <strong>the</strong> newly developed areas. In this ‘lost<br />

space’ <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> more than 6,000 houses are planned over <strong>the</strong> next ten<br />
