Due to cultural restrictions regard<strong>in</strong>g mixed gender groups, <strong>the</strong> participants will<br />

explore and observe Sharjah dur<strong>in</strong>g free periods. A <strong>virtual</strong> tour will be provided dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>studio</strong>.<br />

7.3 Technological Components<br />

The <strong>studio</strong> will rely heavily on technological applications and tools, and 3D digital<br />

media to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> a collaborative <strong>design</strong> environment.<br />

The VDS technological Tools will be available on <strong>the</strong> VDS website and will <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />

� Real-time <strong>in</strong>teractive graphics: Whiteboard.<br />

� Virtual Communication: Social network<strong>in</strong>g website, Facebook.<br />

� 3D Visualisation: Sketch-up & AutoCAD.<br />

� Virtual Communication: Video Conferenc<strong>in</strong>g L<strong>in</strong>k-Up, Email and Facebook.<br />

� Virtual Tour.<br />

The students’ personal devices will used <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> record<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> observations and film<br />

mak<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

8.0 Methods <strong>of</strong> Studio Delivery<br />

8.1 The Task<br />

The <strong>studio</strong> consists <strong>of</strong> 20 participants and is condensed <strong>in</strong>to three days result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a<br />

f<strong>in</strong>al <strong>in</strong>stallation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> output <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>m <strong>of</strong> 3 m<strong>in</strong>ute digital films. The participants are<br />

encouraged to collaborate, overcom<strong>in</strong>g any differences <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>design</strong>.<br />

Participants must have an awareness <strong>of</strong> Sharah’s cosmopolitan population and <strong>the</strong><br />

problems relat<strong>in</strong>g to its future development. Participants must approach <strong>the</strong> project <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> knowledge that <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>design</strong> strategies cannot solve such problems with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>design</strong>ated time-scale, but could be considered and developed fur<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

Although new perspectives may challenge <strong>the</strong> fixed views <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs, <strong>the</strong> <strong>studio</strong>’s ma<strong>in</strong><br />

aim is to th<strong>in</strong>k metaphorically <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> Sharjah’s <strong>in</strong>frastructure, <strong>in</strong> particular <strong>the</strong><br />

l<strong>in</strong>kage between <strong>the</strong> Old Sharjah and <strong>the</strong> new cosmopolitan Sharjah. Participants will<br />

enter <strong>the</strong> <strong>studio</strong> with <strong>the</strong>ir own special <strong>in</strong>telligence and specific identity which be<br />

encouraged as valued qualities and <strong>in</strong>gredients <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Virtual Design Studio. Each<br />

participant is required to research <strong>the</strong> history, geography and statistics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

which is crucial to <strong>the</strong> creation and development <strong>of</strong> <strong>design</strong> strategies.<br />
