The participants will <strong>the</strong>n be <strong>in</strong>structed to explore and observe <strong>the</strong> emirate, and prepare<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>dividual presentations which will take place after lunch. The participants will <strong>the</strong>n<br />

break <strong>for</strong> a flexible break <strong>for</strong> lunch and prayers, which will be considered <strong>in</strong> this case as<br />

an opportunity <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> participants to polish <strong>the</strong>ir f<strong>in</strong>al presentations.<br />

After lunch and prayers, <strong>the</strong> participants will <strong>the</strong>n present <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>itial <strong>design</strong> ideas <strong>in</strong> a<br />

via a video conferenc<strong>in</strong>g facility to enable <strong>the</strong> male and female groups <strong>in</strong>teraction and<br />

on a film <strong>for</strong>mat. The films will be broadcast on MSN and stored on Facebook <strong>for</strong> future<br />

reference. Discussion and critique will be reserved <strong>for</strong> <strong>studio</strong> time.<br />

The participants will <strong>the</strong>n partake <strong>in</strong> <strong>studio</strong>-based work. It is here where Al-Ali and <strong>the</strong><br />

tutors will re-<strong>for</strong>m <strong>the</strong> groups, us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation from Facebook and <strong>the</strong> Pecha Lucha<br />

presentations as a basis <strong>for</strong> do<strong>in</strong>g so. At this po<strong>in</strong>t, <strong>design</strong> briefs need to be f<strong>in</strong>alised <strong>for</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al exhibitions films. Studio-based work will <strong>the</strong>n commence, with <strong>the</strong> tutors<br />

work<strong>in</strong>g closely <strong>for</strong> guidance and support. At this po<strong>in</strong>t, <strong>the</strong> participants will be <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>med<br />

<strong>of</strong> that <strong>the</strong> deadl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir presentations is <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g day.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>studio</strong>-based workshop <strong>the</strong> groups will be remixed and matched by <strong>the</strong><br />

tutors, and will be expected to work on f<strong>in</strong>alis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>design</strong> briefs. The participants are<br />

<strong>the</strong>n encouraged to socialise, reflect and relax <strong>in</strong> accordance with <strong>the</strong> <strong>studio</strong>’s<br />

philosophy on Schon’s <strong>the</strong>ory <strong>of</strong> reflection. Dur<strong>in</strong>g this time <strong>the</strong> participants can visit <strong>the</strong><br />

appo<strong>in</strong>ted zones covered dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>virtual</strong> tour or work with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir newly <strong>for</strong>med<br />

groups. They must facilitate <strong>the</strong> VDS tools, us<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>ks from <strong>the</strong> website to explore <strong>the</strong><br />

emirate us<strong>in</strong>g, and Facebook to answer workbook questions and update status etc, all <strong>of</strong><br />

which will be monitored by <strong>the</strong> tutors <strong>for</strong> assessment.<br />

The day will <strong>the</strong>n end with a lecture from Studio Coord<strong>in</strong>ator Gemma June Howell,<br />

concern<strong>in</strong>g creativity and <strong>design</strong> thought processes. This lecture will encourage <strong>the</strong><br />

participants to th<strong>in</strong>k metaphorically <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> poetry and <strong>design</strong>, teach <strong>the</strong>m to trust<br />

one ano<strong>the</strong>r as team members and will <strong>in</strong>spire <strong>the</strong>m to create <strong>the</strong>ir f<strong>in</strong>al <strong>design</strong><br />

strategies.<br />

Day 3. 21/10/09: 09.30-11.30hrs<br />

Submission & Installation<br />

The f<strong>in</strong>al day is reserved solely <strong>for</strong> presentations and critique. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> first hour <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> day <strong>the</strong> students must submit <strong>the</strong>ir f<strong>in</strong>al projects. The female presentations will take<br />

place via a video conferenc<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>k, discussion and critique will follow from both tutors<br />

and groups. The participants will be required to submit <strong>the</strong>ir presentations and all<br />

relevant material <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>design</strong> projects from <strong>the</strong> participants.<br />

The will <strong>the</strong>n have a free period until 13.30hrs where <strong>the</strong>y will regroup <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al<br />

presentation and critique session <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir projects be<strong>for</strong>e <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al <strong>in</strong>stallation. All <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

tutors will be on hand at <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t and changes can be made be<strong>for</strong>e <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al film<br />

<strong>in</strong>stallation.<br />
