cultural restrictions and time constra<strong>in</strong>ts, <strong>the</strong> Virtual Tour, ra<strong>the</strong>r than a ‘Walk<strong>in</strong>g Tour’<br />

gives <strong>the</strong> participants a basic geographic overview <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> emirate, look<strong>in</strong>g at specific<br />

zones on which <strong>the</strong>y can observe physically or <strong>virtual</strong>ly on <strong>the</strong> VDS website.<br />

The zones <strong>of</strong> observation <strong>in</strong>clude:-<br />

- The Old Sharjah <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Al Hesan area <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Emirate.<br />

- The City centre <strong>of</strong> Sharjah.<br />

- The University City <strong>in</strong> Sharjah.<br />

- The Old Souq.<br />

After <strong>the</strong> Virtual Tour, <strong>the</strong> participants will be subject to an <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mal icebreaker.<br />

After lunch, <strong>the</strong> group will return to <strong>the</strong> lecture hall <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pecha Kucha presentations.<br />

Due to cultural restrictions, <strong>the</strong> Pecha Kucha presentations will <strong>the</strong>n take place <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>for</strong>m <strong>of</strong> pre-prepared films to be viewed by both groups. The Pecha Kucha films are<br />

<strong>design</strong>ed to provide participants with <strong>the</strong> opportunity <strong>for</strong> an <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mal <strong>in</strong>troduction<br />

where each participant is given two m<strong>in</strong>utes to <strong>in</strong>troduce <strong>the</strong>mselves via a pre-prepared<br />

short film.<br />

Follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> presentations, <strong>the</strong> participants will be encouraged to th<strong>in</strong>k freely and<br />

poetically with <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tention to produce metaphorical, orig<strong>in</strong>al ideas. At this stage, <strong>the</strong><br />

group will be <strong>in</strong>structed to work <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir free time; explor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

environment, specifically tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>spiration from this.<br />

The sole aim is to produce <strong>in</strong>novative and creative ideas <strong>for</strong> Virtual Design Studio, to<br />

re<strong>design</strong> Sharjah. At this po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>the</strong> participants will claim spaces <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> production <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>model</strong>s and research, and some will be elected to explore <strong>the</strong> city, libraries or visit <strong>the</strong><br />

computer labs. The participants must <strong>for</strong>m <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>itial <strong>the</strong> groups <strong>the</strong>n collect and<br />

syn<strong>the</strong>size all ideas <strong>in</strong> preparation <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir two m<strong>in</strong>ute presentations <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> next<br />

session.<br />

Dr<strong>in</strong>ks will <strong>the</strong>n be served as an <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mal way to meet one o<strong>the</strong>r and network. Work<strong>in</strong>g<br />

relationships will be established here.<br />

Day 2. 17/10/09: 09.30 hrs.<br />

Collaboration & Initial Presentations<br />

The day will beg<strong>in</strong> with a lecture from Randah Taher. The lecture will serve to ‘crush’ <strong>the</strong><br />

participants’ ideas, giv<strong>in</strong>g a realistic perspective <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> possibly ambitious <strong>design</strong><br />

concepts <strong>in</strong>itially <strong>for</strong>med, and will be provided via a video conferenc<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>k, via MSN <strong>for</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> female/male group. After a short break, ano<strong>the</strong>r lecture will follow from<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>/Dr******* who will give <strong>the</strong> participants a better idea <strong>of</strong> 3D <strong>design</strong> technologies<br />

and how to employ <strong>the</strong>se when devis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>design</strong> strategies.<br />
