1.3 Architectural Project Cycle and Process<br />

The architectural process <strong>in</strong>cludes several phases and undergoes<br />

various stages. The students <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>the</strong>ory-based courses are taught<br />

about <strong>the</strong>se processes. Never<strong>the</strong>less, it is necessary <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>m to<br />

develop an understand<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong> practice, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> differences between each<br />

phase. The students also need to understand <strong>the</strong> role <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>design</strong>er <strong>in</strong><br />

each phase. This section will highlight <strong>the</strong> architectural process cycle<br />

accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> Royal Institute <strong>of</strong> British Architecture (RIBA) and <strong>the</strong><br />

American Institute <strong>of</strong> Architecture (AIA).<br />

Both RIBA 37 and AIA 38 have def<strong>in</strong>ed phases which <strong>the</strong> architectural<br />

processes undergo. These phases reflect <strong>the</strong> project development<br />

stages. Each phase is described by its own characteristics accord<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

<strong>the</strong> RIBA and AIA <strong>in</strong>stitutes, which differ <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> way <strong>the</strong> architect<br />

behaves and carry on <strong>the</strong> tasks required <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> project. Thompson 39<br />

def<strong>in</strong>es five phases <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>design</strong> procedures. He identifies <strong>the</strong> agenda<br />

<strong>of</strong> conduct<strong>in</strong>g a project. These stages, accord<strong>in</strong>g to AIA <strong>in</strong>clude<br />

orig<strong>in</strong>ate, focus, <strong>design</strong>, build and occupy. In <strong>the</strong> first three stages <strong>the</strong><br />

ma<strong>in</strong> concern is to come up with <strong>the</strong> <strong>design</strong> accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> proposal<br />

and need, and <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al two are <strong>the</strong> actual execution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> idea<br />

generated. While, accord<strong>in</strong>g to this <strong>in</strong>stitute, some researchers have<br />

divided <strong>the</strong> <strong>design</strong> process <strong>in</strong>to five phases, o<strong>the</strong>rs have divided <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>novation process <strong>in</strong>to three areas that <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong> fuzzy front end<br />

(FFE), new product development (NPD), and <strong>the</strong> commercialisation.<br />
