Participants expressed <strong>the</strong>ir op<strong>in</strong>ion that a collaborative culture was<br />

created and encouraged by <strong>the</strong> VDS ethos, through its practice and<br />

procedures. Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> activities <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> project conta<strong>in</strong>ed a collective<br />

nature to encourage <strong>the</strong> student to work toge<strong>the</strong>r and share <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation.<br />

As discussed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> previous chapter <strong>the</strong> VDS was equipped with<br />

technological tools as well as pedagogical tools to reach its goals. The<br />

factors that <strong>in</strong>fluenced <strong>the</strong> student collaboration are discussed below <strong>in</strong><br />

more detail:<br />

8.3.1 Anonymous<br />

As <strong>the</strong> students‟ cultural background played an important part <strong>in</strong><br />

prevent<strong>in</strong>g male and female students from <strong>in</strong>teract<strong>in</strong>g directly <strong>in</strong>side <strong>the</strong><br />

classroom, <strong>the</strong> anonymous factor played an important role as <strong>the</strong><br />

students were asked as part <strong>of</strong> this project to create a Facebook<br />

account specifically <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> this workshop. The students<br />

were asked to use <strong>the</strong>ir ID numbers at <strong>the</strong> start. From observation,<br />

students were found to be <strong>in</strong>teract<strong>in</strong>g freely <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>virtual</strong> time. Not<br />

know<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> gender <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r party helped melt <strong>the</strong> ice as far as<br />

gender issue was concerned. At a later stage <strong>the</strong> students were<br />

encouraged to <strong>in</strong>teract face to face as when <strong>in</strong> class <strong>the</strong>y found out <strong>the</strong><br />

identity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> person <strong>the</strong>y were work<strong>in</strong>g with. Accord<strong>in</strong>gly, this factor<br />

was believed to be one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> factors that fuelled and helped <strong>in</strong><br />

promot<strong>in</strong>g collaboration.<br />

8.3.2 Network<strong>in</strong>g<br />

The network<strong>in</strong>g aspect <strong>of</strong> VDS 3 as shown <strong>in</strong> Figure 8.1 (see above) is a<br />

shared factor between <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> two <strong>the</strong>mes collaboration and creativity.<br />

Us<strong>in</strong>g VDS 3 <strong>the</strong> network<strong>in</strong>g factor was streng<strong>the</strong>ned as <strong>the</strong> students<br />

made <strong>the</strong>ir first social network<strong>in</strong>g opportunity with <strong>the</strong> creation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

Facebook accounts. As <strong>the</strong> students progressed through <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong><br />

Facebook accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> observation study <strong>the</strong>y streng<strong>the</strong>ned <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

network<strong>in</strong>g skills <strong>in</strong>side <strong>the</strong> VDS 3 workshop. Facebook played an<br />

important part with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> structure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> VDS 3 workshop to promote<br />

collaboration among <strong>the</strong> students.<br />
