architecture as <strong>the</strong> major subject <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir first and third years. Thirty four<br />

students attended from <strong>the</strong> 50 who had <strong>in</strong>itially registered <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

workshop. The researcher attempted to discover whe<strong>the</strong>r those who<br />

had dropped out had different important characteristics from those who<br />

attended. The college records <strong>in</strong>dicate that <strong>the</strong>re are no major<br />

differences with regard to age, gender, or academic per<strong>for</strong>mance.<br />

Twenty six <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> students were female. Five <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> students were UAE<br />

nationals and <strong>the</strong> rest were from different Arabic countries; <strong>the</strong>re are<br />

also two Indians. This perfectly represented <strong>the</strong> actual variation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

UAE society <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> nationalities.<br />

� Focus Group<br />

After <strong>the</strong> completion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> VDS 3 workshop <strong>the</strong> researcher conducted a<br />

focus group survey with a number <strong>of</strong> students - who voluntary attended<br />

<strong>the</strong> workshop to get an <strong>in</strong>-depth <strong>in</strong>sight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> workshop and<br />

its importance <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduc<strong>in</strong>g new ways <strong>of</strong> th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g and new ways <strong>of</strong><br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g us<strong>in</strong>g technology. The group was selected randomly by<br />

email<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> students us<strong>in</strong>g Facebook, ask<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m to meet with <strong>the</strong><br />

researcher and her assistant <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> university at 1600 after <strong>the</strong>y had<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ished <strong>the</strong>ir study commitments. Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> students turned up. The<br />

researcher was look<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> at least 15 students – only 10 arrived. The<br />

researcher had previously prepared some questions but <strong>in</strong>tended only to<br />

direct <strong>the</strong> conversation ra<strong>the</strong>r than limit <strong>the</strong> answers. The researcher<br />

handled <strong>the</strong> task <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>quir<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> students and facilitated <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> research assistant who per<strong>for</strong>med <strong>the</strong> transcription <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole<br />

conversation. The students were asked about <strong>the</strong>ir feedback on <strong>the</strong><br />

workshop <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y <strong>in</strong>dicated that it had been <strong>the</strong> first time <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>m<br />

to undertake a workshop <strong>of</strong> that k<strong>in</strong>d, carry<strong>in</strong>g all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se ideas and new<br />

methods <strong>of</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> addition to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduction <strong>of</strong> games and<br />

activities <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> classroom. The students also <strong>in</strong>dicated <strong>the</strong> importance<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduc<strong>in</strong>g social network<strong>in</strong>g technologies such as Facebook and<br />

that <strong>the</strong>y should start us<strong>in</strong>g it not only <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> workshop but <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

entire university study, as <strong>the</strong>y believed <strong>in</strong> its potential <strong>in</strong> sav<strong>in</strong>g time<br />

and eas<strong>in</strong>g communications, especially when issues such as gender are<br />
