� Focus Group<br />

The focus group methodology was conducted at <strong>the</strong> exploratory survey<br />

<strong>in</strong> stage one. The aim is to identify students' perspectives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> current<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g and learn<strong>in</strong>g practices <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>design</strong> courses <strong>of</strong>fered <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

architecture school <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> UAEU and to evaluate <strong>the</strong> students‟<br />

perceptions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first proposed VDS. The aim <strong>of</strong> this <strong>in</strong>vestigation was<br />

<strong>in</strong>itially to ga<strong>in</strong> a prelim<strong>in</strong>ary understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> difficulties,<br />

approaches, attitudes, perceptions, and motivation related to <strong>the</strong><br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>design</strong> <strong>in</strong> architecture schools. Secondly, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestigation<br />

was <strong>design</strong>ed to assess <strong>the</strong> extent to which <strong>the</strong> students would be<br />

<strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> sophisticated technology <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g environment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> UAE architecture education schools <strong>in</strong> order<br />

to achieve effective learn<strong>in</strong>g. F<strong>in</strong>ally, <strong>the</strong> aim was to <strong>in</strong>vestigate<br />

students‟ perception towards <strong>the</strong> developed VDS after a short trial. The<br />

study was conducted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UAEU because it is <strong>the</strong> largest university <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> UAE, and because o<strong>the</strong>r universities that house an architectural<br />

department <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UAE follow a similar educational system. The study<br />

revealed students‟ <strong>in</strong>terest and motivation towards us<strong>in</strong>g technology<br />

such as visualisation and 3D <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir learn<strong>in</strong>g. The students added that<br />

<strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> visual aids assisted <strong>the</strong>ir learn<strong>in</strong>g and understand<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

made learn<strong>in</strong>g more fun.<br />

� Observations<br />

As part <strong>of</strong> this research and <strong>the</strong> data collection <strong>the</strong> researcher was<br />

<strong>in</strong>volved as an external member researcher. It has been shown that<br />

observations create rigour <strong>in</strong> a study when comb<strong>in</strong>ed with o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

research, thus provid<strong>in</strong>g depth as well as enhanc<strong>in</strong>g consistency and<br />

validity. 270 The researcher spent one semester <strong>in</strong> 2005 closely observ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g and learn<strong>in</strong>g processes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Architecture <strong>in</strong><br />
