The Pacemaker Patients Education – Initial Project Review
Pacemaker wearers need to be educated not only in living with disease, but also in living with
device (in awareness of threats). The number of people (cardiac implant wearers) whose work
or live exposes them to artificial (man-made) electromagnetic fields is growing. The
awareness of coexistence EMF sources within the healthcare and everyday environment is
rising. That information can be available through specialized webpage. System (ePacemaker)
described a problem of exposing pacemaker wearers (cardiac pacemaker) to EMF. The basic
specification of education cardiac device implant wearers about electromagnetism and
specially electromagnetic interferences are:
(1) provide information about device malfunction and its consequences,
(2) include family members in education.
The initial version of ePacemaker system will allow medical staff to show patients
educational materials featuring problem of exposing pacemaker wearers to electromagnetic
field. This will provide patients with a better understanding of interaction pacemaker-EMF.
Summary
Trend in pacemakers malfunction rates due to EMI in real-life situation that is the problem.
Patients are interested in estimation of risk and they want to know the relation between the
level of risk and technical parameters of exposure is a prevalent aspect of the everyday life.
Authors suggest future plans focusing on realization specialized system (as a part of
specialized webpage). Project will be focused on popularization knowledge of EMF
interference. This will provide patients with a better understanding of kind of interaction
pacemaker-EMF.
