Youth Board member Rachel Berner-Hays Developing the next generation of community leaders It takes a collective effort to change lives, and the Childhaven Youth Board has quickly become a key player on our team. The Youth Board gives teenagers the opportunity to create meaningful change in their communities by financially supporting the mission of Childhaven—all while gaining leadership experience and impacting their communities. These committed young people come together one Sunday each month to learn about philanthropy and then put their knowledge to use to raise funds for projects at Childhaven branches. Projects have included purchasing car seats, updating play areas and funding teacher trainings. “I’ve been lucky enough to grow up surrounded by people who care about me,” says 2010-2012 Youth Board member Rachel Berner-Hays. “For me, Childhaven is all about the stories—the kids who don’t have it as good as I did. It gets to me, and I have to do something. I’ve always had a passion for service.” A junior at Nathan Hale High School in Seattle, Rachel adds, “Childhaven knows what it’s doing, and they’re good at it. When you give to the organization, you can see the good you’re doing right away. That’s why I stay involved.” Childhaven benefits today and in the long-term from the dedicated members of the Youth Board. They raise funds for immediate needs while developing a lifelong passion for service that will support Childhaven and our community for decades. CHILDHAVEN Successes and Opportunities 6
A year establishes a foundation for the future of changes Over the past year, exciting changes paved the way for ensuring Childhaven’s long-term viability and for expanding our child abuse prevention mission into the community. In May 2011, Maria Chavez Wilcox became President of Childhaven, bringing with her a deep personal passion for the cause, a nationally-recognized reputation in nonprofit leadership and a determination to build even deeper community support for our mission. In July 2011, the Washington State Department of Early Learning (DEL)—the first Cabinet-level state government department in the nation focused solely on young children—assumed oversight of Childhaven. Although Childhaven is not a state agency, we are licensed and monitored by the state because we receive state funds to partially cover the costs of therapeutic child care. Under the umbrella of this caring advocate, Childhaven finds greater protection of its state funding, more resources to support the early learning elements of our program and a committed champion of our mission. Childhaven also kicked off our Second Century Campaign. The Campaign is an ambitious initiative to galvanize individuals, families and our generous community to raise $20 million over the next five years—$10 million to protect and strengthen our core program and another $10 million to create an endowment to further secure our mission for the next 100 years. Every dollar donated to Childhaven through 2016 will go toward the Second Century Campaign. More information on the Second Century Campaign can be found on the inside flap of this report.
