A GOOD START Matthew and his mother wait for the Childhaven van, driven by one of our teachers who can observe family and peer interactions even before Matthew enters our doors. BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS A FULL DAY’S NUTRITION A day in the life of a Childhaven child Play time helps Matthew learn to interact in positive ways with other children. Snacks and two hot meals provide a full day’s nutritional value. Low 1-to-5 teacher-child ratios mean Matthew can get individual attention and therapy to heal. In the classroom, he also participates in early learning activities that will help prepare him for success in kindergarten. At nap time, a teacher helps Matthew feel safe and comforted. END OF A HAPPY DAY The Childhaven van drops off Matthew at home. That evening, a Childhaven home visitor visits the family to assess Matthew’s safety, help his mom improve her parenting skills and connects the family with other needed services in the community. Caring for children, caring for our community Since 1909, Childhaven has been an integral partner in the health and well being of our community. But we didn’t become a local leader, statewide advocate and national model in the treatment and prevention of child abuse and neglect by relying on our 103-year legacy. We use the most innovative and scientifically proven methods of healing children and strengthening families today while planning and strategizing for tomorrow. Our programs include: Therapeutic child care: Child welfare authorities refer almost 400 children to us each year, and we provide them with developmentally-focused care and therapy in an enriched learning environment. Our program emphasizes healing as well as kindergarten readiness. Drug-affected infant program: Children affected by their parents’ substance abuse receive care and treatment while their parents are enrolled in an outpatient chemical dependency treatment program. Parent training and education: We work with parents and guardians individually and in groups to give them the strategies, support and confidence they need to nurture their children and build stronger families. Childhaven employs only the most committed, professional, licensed staff. And we provide a full scope of “wraparound” services, such as health screenings, nutritious meals, transportation, monthly home visits and daily home monitoring. Branches are located throughout King County at the Broadway (Central Seattle), Eli Creekmore (Burien area) and Patrick L.
