Pr<strong>of</strong>essor James B. Wadley Remembered<br />
Faculty News<br />
<strong>Washburn</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong> mourned the death <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor James B.<br />
Wadley who died Jan. 1, 2010, at the age <strong>of</strong> 64.<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Wadley joined the <strong>Washburn</strong> <strong>Law</strong> faculty in 1979 and subsequently taught<br />
courses in many subjects, including Agricultural <strong>Law</strong>, Water Rights, Entertainment<br />
<strong>Law</strong>, Creative Thinking for <strong><strong>Law</strong>yer</strong>s, Patents, Trademarks and Copyrights, and Native<br />
American <strong>Law</strong>. He was selected as the 2000-01 William O. Douglas Outstanding<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> the Year. He served as director <strong>of</strong> the Rural <strong>Law</strong> Center and authored a<br />
number <strong>of</strong> books and law review articles.<br />
Wadley earned a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from Utah State <strong>University</strong>. He<br />
lived for two years in Uruguay, Paraguay, and Argentina as a missionary for The<br />
Church <strong>of</strong> Jesus Christ <strong>of</strong> Latter-day Saints. He obtained his juris doctor from<br />
Tulane <strong>University</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Law</strong> in New Orleans in 1972.<br />
Prior to joining the <strong>Washburn</strong> <strong>Law</strong> faculty, Wadley taught at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Florida<br />
Holland <strong>Law</strong> Center. He also studied law in Mexico and performed legal research in<br />
Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda. While at <strong>Washburn</strong> he accepted invitations to teach<br />
law courses in England and Poland. He was a Distinguished Visiting Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong><br />
Agricultural <strong>Law</strong> at Southern Illi<strong>no</strong>is <strong>University</strong> in 2007.<br />
Wadley volunteered his talents outside the law school, serving as circuit court<br />
judge for the Iowa Tribe <strong>of</strong> Kansas and Nebraska, and as district court judge for<br />
the Prairie Band <strong>of</strong> Potawatomi Nation. He organized and led the College Hill<br />
Association Band for its annual 4th <strong>of</strong> July parade and served for several years as<br />
bishop <strong>of</strong> the Sherwood Ward <strong>of</strong> The Church <strong>of</strong> Jesus Christ <strong>of</strong> Latter-day Saints.<br />
Wadley’s many talents included painting, and during his 30-plus years at <strong>Washburn</strong><br />
<strong>Law</strong>, his depictions <strong>of</strong> the law school and other Kansas scenes were presented to<br />
retiring law school faculty and staff.<br />
During Dean Thomas Romig’s remarks at the law school’s commencement in May,<br />
he led the audience in a moment <strong>of</strong> silence in Wadley’s memory. The <strong>Washburn</strong> <strong>Law</strong><br />
Journal (vol. 49, <strong>no</strong>. 3) contains a tribute prepared by Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Lyn Goering, ’87.<br />

faculty/. <strong>Washburn</strong> <strong>Law</strong> faculty, staff, students, and alumni extend their deepest<br />
sympathies to his wife Frances and other family members.<br />
At the family’s request, a memorial fund was established to support the law school.<br />
