The following events were hosted by the Children and Family <strong>Law</strong> Center. Presentations are open to all students and<br />

qualify as “Extracurricular Course <strong>of</strong> Study” for students interested in obtaining a Certifi cate <strong>of</strong> Concentration.<br />

October 13, 2010<br />

Adoption: Finding Homes for Children<br />

Megan Monsour, an associate attorney with Martin<br />

Pringle in Wichita, presented current adoption practices<br />

and ways to place adoptive children in appropriate<br />

environments. Monsour represents adoptive parents in<br />

a variety <strong>of</strong> other adoption matters, including contested<br />

adoptions, agency placements, foster care adoptions,<br />

step-parent adoptions, and relative adoptions. She also<br />

represents prospective guardians in custody matters, such<br />

as those involved in child in need <strong>of</strong> care proceedings.<br />

Careers in Family <strong>Law</strong> Panel<br />

The panelists for Careers in Family <strong>Law</strong> were James McEntire,<br />

’76, LeAnn Cochran ’04, Kevin Cook, ’99, and Jamie<br />

Corkhill, ’78.<br />

LeAnn Cochran, ’04, an attorney with Kansas<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Social and Rehabilitation Services (SRS);<br />

Kevin Cook, ’99, former guardian ad litem; Jamie<br />

Corkhill, ’78, SRS Child Support Enforcement; and Jim<br />

McEntire, ’76, private family law attorney, discussed<br />

their experiences within several unique areas <strong>of</strong><br />

family law.<br />

Cochran worked as a school teacher for 10 years before<br />

attending <strong>Washburn</strong> <strong>Law</strong>. After law school she opened<br />

a private practice while also representing parents in the<br />

Child in Need <strong>of</strong> Care system. Since 2006, she has been<br />

an attorney for Kansas SRS.<br />

Corkhill has served as policy counsel for the Kansas<br />

Child Support Enforcement (CSE) program since<br />

1990 where she develops CSE legislative proposals and<br />

strategies, analyzes others’ proposals, and represents CSE<br />

before the Kansas Legislature. In 2010, Corkhill became<br />

a member <strong>of</strong> the Kansas Judicial Council’s Family <strong>Law</strong><br />

Advisory Committee.<br />

Cook is the managing partner <strong>of</strong> Cook and Fisher LLP,<br />

Topeka, where his principal practice consists <strong>of</strong> family<br />

law and criminal defense. He served as a guardian ad litem<br />

for Child in Need <strong>of</strong> Care cases in Shawnee County from<br />

2000 to 2008.<br />

After serving as a research attorney for the Kansas Court<br />

<strong>of</strong> Appeals, McEntire joined Sloan <strong>Law</strong> Firm. He has<br />

taught as an associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor at <strong>Washburn</strong> <strong>University</strong>,<br />

both in the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Business and the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Applied and Continuing Education in the probate and<br />

domestic relations areas.<br />

CASA: Give Children A Voice<br />

Alisha Lampe, volunteer recruiter at CASA; Corrine Johnson;<br />

Letiffany Obozele; Sharolyn Dugger; and Laura Windheuser.<br />

Sharolyn Dugger, executive director <strong>of</strong> Court Appointed<br />

Special Advocates <strong>of</strong> Shawnee County (CASA), discussed<br />

the CASA program and how to become a volunteer.<br />
