Interim President to 

Remain at SUNYIT 

Dr. Peter A. Spina 

to serve through 

2005-2006 

Officials at the State University 

of New York (SUNY) and SUNYIT 

have announced an extended 

appointment for Dr. Peter A. Spina, 

Interim President. 

“Excellence of presidential 

leadership at SUNY campuses is a 

critical component for the future 

success of our university. I have 

asked Peter to remain as Interim 

President at SUNYIT through the 

2005-06 academic year at the very 

least,” Chancellor Robert L. King 

said. “The SUNYIT College Council 

has indicated its support, and 

Dr. Spina has agreed to lead the 

campus forward at this important 

period of its institutional development.” 

College Council Chair Jim 

Brock Jr. said the Council has 

discussed the Chancellor’s recommendation. 

“We are in complete 

agreement with the Chancellor,” 

Brock said. “Peter Spina is moving 

SUNYIT in the right direction, and 

we are pleased we will continue 

to have the benefit of his leadership.” 

“I thank the Chancellor, Chairman 

Brock, and members of the 

College Council,” Dr. Spina said. 

“SUNYIT is an exciting institution 

facing many opportunities 

for renewal and growth, and I 

look forward to working with the 

faculty, staff, and all members of

From 1981 to 1999 Spina was 

President of Monroe Community 

College in Rochester, N.Y., the 

largest multi-campus community 

college in upstate New York. From 

1999 to 2003, he was Founding 

Executive Director of the Institute 

for Community College Development 

at Cornell University, a professional 

leadership development 

and research partnership between 

SUNY and Cornell University. 

From 2003 until assuming the duties 

of Interim President at SUNYIT 

in June 2004, he served as interim 

president at Thomas Nelson Community 

College, in Hampton and 

Williamsburg, Va. 

Named President Emeritus of 

Monroe Community College in 

1999, Dr. Spina is the recipient 

of a number of honors recognizing 

his academic leadership and 

community service, including the 

Association of Presidents of Public 

Community Colleges Presidential 

Service Award and the Greater 

Rochester Chamber of Commerce 

Civic Medal. In 1999, he was 

named the first honorary lifetime 

member of the American Association 

of Community Colleges.

A Warm Welcome! 

Area college presidents welcomed SUNYIT Interim President 

Peter A. Spina to the region with a private meeting on the campus 

of Herkimer County Community College July 27. HCCC President 

Ronald F. Williams and Dr. Spina were joined by SUNY Vice Chancellor 

and Chief of Staff Elizabeth D. “Betty” Capaldi, Mohawk Valley 

Community College President Michael I. Schafer, Utica School of 

Commerce President Phil Williams, and Fulton-Montgomery Community 

College President Barry Weinberg. 

“We had a great meeting,” Dr. Capaldi told reporters at a press 

briefing. “Dr. Spina is a great, fresh presence…SUNY is committed 

to this area, and the future is very bright for collaboration among 

the area’s institutions.” 

Dr. Spina stressed the “tremendous potential” area colleges offer 

for Mohawk Valley residents seeking higher education; SUNYIT 

was founded in 1966 to offer regional community college graduates 

opportunities for completion of a bachelor’s degree. “There 

are hundreds of students graduating from community colleges in 

this area,” Dr. Spina said. “Some academic programs need to be 

redesigned to make them a better fit [for transfer students]. We are 

going to do so, and we are going to do so expeditiously.” 

“We’ve always had the best interest of SUNYIT at heart,” Dr. 

Williams said. “We plan to continue these discussions, and you can 

expect more concrete results.”

Mele Room Dedicated 

in Cayan Library 

Friends, family, and colleagues 

gathered September 22 in the 

Cayan Library to honor the memory 

of Edward V. Mele, the late 

chairman of Mele Manufacturing, 

Inc. of Utica, N.Y. 

A dedication ceremony was 

held to formally name the “Edward 

V. Mele/Mele Foundation Room” 

in recognition of a $100,000 gift 

from The Mele Foundation. The 

gift will permanently endow a 

new SUNYIT student scholarship 

in Mr. Mele’s honor. Speakers 

at the ceremony included Ms. 

Robbin Mele, spouse of the late 

Edward Mele; Mr. Joseph E. Mele, 

President of the Mele Foundation; 

Dr. Theodore Max, Member of the 

SUNYIT Foundation and College 

Council; Dr. Peter A. Spina, Interim 

President of SUNYIT; and Dr. 

Peter J. Cayan, President Emeritus. 

A photograph of Mr. Mele and a 

bronze plaque were unveiled during 

the ceremony and are displayed 

permanently in the Mele Room. 

Edward V. Mele became president 

of Mele Manufacturing in 

1951 and was active in the community 

until his death in January 

2003 at age 84. He served on the 

boards of trustees of the State 

University of New York and the 

SUNY Construction Fund, and was 

also active in many community 

organizations. 

The Edward V. Mele/Mele 

Foundation Room is the largest 

reading room in the Cayan Library. 

Located on the second floor, the 

Mele Room features a fireplace and 

offers views of the north campus 

lawn and Kunsela Hall. The $14 

million Cayan Library was dedicated 

in 2003.

In Charge, In Rome 

Alum says education 

advanced his career 

SUNYIT’s 20,000 alumni are 

successful in all walks of life, and 

in many professions—including 

law enforcement. No one has had 

more success close to home than 

Rome native Otto Panara, now 

Interim Chief of Police for the City 

of Rome Police Department. 

By the time he was in his early 

20s, Panara knew he wanted a law 

enforcement career. The son of a 

dry cleaner and tailor, he graduated 

from Rome Free Academy 

in 1953 and spent the next fi ve 

years working in his father’s business, 

Superior Dry Cleaners, and 

working at a local gas station. In 

1958, he was drafted, and for two 

years, he served as a corporal in 

the U.S. Army, stationed in Korea. 

Back home, he applied to become 

a state trooper but encountered a 

hiring freeze. 

Determined to purse a law 

enforcement career, Panara turned 

to local police work. In 1965, he 

became a Rome Police Department 

patrolman, a position he held until 

1973. His duties were diverse: 

patrolling the downtown area, 

checking businesses, handling 

auto accidents and domestic disputes, 

breaking up bar fi ghts. 

Panara recalls those early years 

on the force with satisfaction. He 

remembers helping a woman and 

her children escape from a fi re in a 

second fl oor apartment above the 

Rome Bowling Center. Another 

time, he identifi ed an arsonist fl eeing 

a burning building on North

Washington Street by recognizing 

the man’s companion: his everpresent 

large dog. “Walking a beat 

gives anyone an education of what 

police work is. You take care of 

things by yourself,” he explains. 

“It allows an offi cer to help people. 

They knew we were there 24 hours 

a day.” 

Despite working long hours, 

Panara decided to continue his 

education. First, he attended 

Mohawk Valley Community College, 

earning an associate’s degree 

in police science in 1972; he was 

the fi rst Rome Police Department 

member to earn a college degree in 

police science. 

In 1974, Panara enrolled at 

SUNYIT, then Upper Division 

College. Taking classes three nights 

a week and Saturdays, writing papers 

and studying for exams – plus 

working full-time in the Rome 

Police Department – provided 

challenges, but Panara didn’t mind. 

“I really liked what I was doing,” 

he says. 

Most helpful to Panara were 

criminal justice courses, especially 

those taught by former Syracuse 

Police Chief Thomas Sardino and 

by the late Utica attorney and 

one-time mayor Stephen Pawlinga. 

In instructor John MacEnroe’s 

administration courses, Panara

learned budgeting and managing 

subordinates. SUNYIT’s psychology 

courses were valuable too. 

“They helped me bring people 

together.” 

In 1977, Panara graduated from 

SUNYIT cum laude with a bachelor’s 

degree in professional studies, 

criminal justice. He’s proud of that 

achievement, recognizing the role 

education played in his career 

advancement. “SUNYIT’s program 

gave me an excellent foundation to 

further my accomplishments in the 

law enforcement fi eld,” he says. 

Panara’s advancement continued. 

He was an investigator in the 

Juvenile Aid Division from 1973 

to 1978; he became a sergeant 

and commander of that division in 

1978; he was a liaison between the 

Rome Civil Defense Council and 

Rome Auxiliary Police from 1978 

to 1985; he served as lieutenant 

and assistant watch commander 

in 1987; he became captain and 

watch commander in 1989. From 

1994 to 1996, he juggled duties 

as day watch commander, deputy 

chief and detective division commander. 

In 1995, Panara became 

deputy chief of police. 

Throughout his career, Panara 

has received commendations, plus 

exceptional service and departmental 

meritorious service awards. 

In 1988, he earned the New York 

State Juvenile Offi cer of the Year 

award. 

Panara is especially proud 

of his work with juveniles. He’s 

visited schools, teaching children 

how to stay safe and become good 

citizens. Although he usually wore 

plain clothes as an investigator, 

he always wore his uniform when 

visiting schools. “I had nothing but 

positive responses from kids,” he 

says. “It’s meaningful to have offi - 

cers in schools to get on a personal 

basis with them.” 

Now, as interim police chief, 

Panara, 68, works 60-plus hour 

weeks, managing the 74-person 

department. He oversees special 

investigations, training, patrol, 

juvenile aid, accident reconstruction, 

canine and mountain bike 

patrols, and a special response 

team. As interim police chief, he 

attends more meetings and is more 

visible. The most challenging part 

of the job? “Being every place at 

once,” he says with a smile. 

To relax, Panara and his wife, 

Judith, enjoy traveling to Saratoga, 

the Finger Lakes and to New York 

City, where their son, Christopher, 

lives. Occasionally, Panara watches 

“Law and Order,” which he calls 

“semi-realistic.” He likes antique 

cars: he owns a 1927 Model T 

Ford, as well as a Harley Davidson. 

Having risen through the ranks 

to the top of the department, 

Panara still has some goals. He 

hopes for an auxiliary building 

for training and forensic investigations, 

and he’d like the department 

to acquire a snowmobile to help 

patrol rural areas. 

How long will he remain Rome 

Police Department’s interim chief? 

“As long as needed,” he says. “I 

enjoy the work.” 

SUNYIT’s program gave me an 

excellent foundation to further my 

accomplishments in the law enforcement 

fi eld.

Fall 2004 Open House Welcomes 

Students, Families to Campus 

More than 300 prospective 

students, their family members 

and guests attended Open House 

Saturday, November 6, on the 

SUNYIT campus. Open House has 

traditionally been held twice a year 

to give prospective undergraduate 

and graduate students and family 

members information about 

SUNYIT’s programs in technology 

and professional studies, and a 

first-hand look at the SUNYIT 

campus.

“On behalf of the faculty and 

staff, I am happy to welcome you to 

SUNYIT,” said Dr. Peter A. Spina, 

Interim President. “It’s a pleasure to 

see so many students and parents 

here and I know once you get to 

know us today, we’ll be seeing 

more of you in the future.” 

Participants at Open House

and Vice President for Academic 

Affairs Dr. Kenneth Kraft and Vice 

President for Student Affairs Dr. 

Scott Mantie. Following the overview 

presentations, students and 

parents met with faculty to discuss 

specific academic programs, and 

with staff to ask questions about 

admissions, financial aid, and 

other aspects of campus life. Lunch 

in the Campus Center and tours of 

the campus, including SUNYIT’s 

two Residence Halls, rounded out 

the program. 

“It was great to see a growing 

number of prospective students 

and parents taking part in Open 

House,” said Marybeth Lyons, 

SUNYIT director of admissions. 

“Those who weren’t able to join us 

are welcome to contact the Admissions

and we’ll be happy to set up individual 

campus visits, or send them 

an information packet.” 

In October, SUNYIT welcomed 

prospective freshmen and their 

families to campus for a full-scale 

visitation day. “Discovery Day” was

College Council News 

Max reappointed, Donavan joins board 

Governor George Pataki has 

announced the reappointment of 

retired surgeon and educator Theodore 

C. Max, M.D, and the new 

appointment of Patrick J. Donovan 

of Utica to the SUNYIT College 

Council. Dr. Max’s term will expire 

June 30, 2010. Donovan’s term will 

expire June 30, 2006; his appointment 

fills a vacancy created by the 

resignation of Richard Collins. 

During his career, Dr. Max held 

a number of hospital appointments, 

including senior surgeon, 

former chief of surgery, and pastpresident 

of medical staff at both 

St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Utica, 

N.Y., and St. Luke’s-Memorial 

Hospital, New Hartford, N.Y. 

He was a Fellow and a Member 

of the Board of Governors of the 

American College of Surgeons, and 

is a current or past member of a 

number of other professional organizations, 

including the American 

College of Surgeons, New York 

State Department of Health Board 

for Professional Medical Conduct, 

Central New York Academy of 

Medicine, and the Medical Society 

of the State of New York.. 

He has held teaching appointments 

at the University of Rochester, 

where he was Senior Instructor 

in Surgery. He is also active as a 

facilitator and board member of 

the Mohawk Valley Institute for 

Learning in Retirement. 

Dr. Max is the recipient of the 

American Medical Association’s 

Physicians Recognition Award, and 

has been profiled in Who’s Who 

in Medicine and Healthcare, and 

Who’s Who in the World. He is the 

author of numerous research publications 

in his discipline, and has 

presented at medical and academic 

conferences across the country. 

Theodore C. Max, M.D. 

Donovan is President of the 

Utica Common Council, sits on 

the City’s Board of Estimate and 

Apportionment, is a member of the 

Council’s Economic Development 

Committee, and chairs the City’s 

Public Safety Committee. He is 

currently the Associate Executive 

Director of United Cerebral Palsy 

of the Utica Area, Inc. From 1993 

to 1998, he served as Oneida 

County Comptroller. Educated in 

the Utica public schools, he is a 

1984 graduate of SUNYIT. 

Donovan is also involved in a 

number of community organizations; 

he serves as treasurer of 

Utica Dollars for Scholars, chairman 

of the Oneida County Sports 

Facility Authority, and treasurer of 

the North Utica Little League. He is 

the recipient of both the “40 under 

40” and “Accent on Excellence” 

community leadership awards. 

Each campus of the State University 

of New York is advised by 

a 10-member council. Nine members 

are appointed by the governor 

to serve six-year terms; the tenth 

member is a student elected annually 

by the student body on each 

campus. The College Council is 

entrusted with broad powers of 

advice and counsel; members are 

concerned with all major institutional 

policy decisions, setting 

academic standards, budget review 

and all manner of decisions that 

affect students’ well-being.

Two years after starting the 

Mohawk Valley’s first MBA 

program, SUNYIT’s School of 

Management recently announced 

an effort that will allow working 

professionals easier access to the 

Master of Business Administration 

in Technology Management. 

“Quick Start” will enable qualified 

students to take up to six 

credit hours in the program before 

meeting all formal admission 

requirements. 

The role of nurses in responding 

to public emergencies was 

discussed in a lecture at SUNYIT 

on October 7. “Emergencies Happen: 

Helping a community get 

ready” was presented by Columbia 

University’s Dr. Kristine M. Gebbie 

in Kunsela Lecture Hall.

is the Elizabeth Standish Gill Associate 

Professor of Nursing and 

Director, Center for Health Policy 

at Columbia University School of 

Nursing. 

The Center for Health and 

Aging at SUNYIT, established in 

1998, enables faculty from several 

disciplines to conduct interdisciplinary 

research and related activities 

in the areas of aging and health. 

Recent and ongoing research 

initiatives include the dynamics

SUNYIT on a part-time basis,” 

said Marybeth Lyons, director of

taken one or two classes, we can

evenings on the SUNYIT campus.

Career Fair Brings Together Job-Seekers, Employers 

Hundreds of students, alumni 

and other job-seekers joined more 

than 65 employers at SUNYIT’s 

Career Fair 2004 on October 21 in 

the Campus Center gymnasium. 

Participating employers were 

looking to fill internship, parttime, 

and full-time opportunities; 

current SUNYIT students, alumni 

and other interested attendees 

distributed résumés and pursued 

potential career connections. 

Among the employers recruiting 

at Career Fair 2004 were:

in addition to the more 

traditional entry-level hires,” says 

Career Services assistant director 

Robert Palazzo. “Alumni who 

attended Career Fair found 

employers offering professional 

advancement as well as opportunities 

to make a career change.”

Safety First: AED’s on Campus 

MVILR donation paved the way for defibrillator program 

In official surveys, the SUNYIT 

campus always gets high marks 

from students for safety and security. 

Now, thanks to some new 

equipment the campus is even 

safer. 

Automatic External Defibrillators 

– AED’s – are now available 

in all campus buildings. 

Increasingly used in a variety 

of public locations, AED’s save 

lives by delivering an electrical 

shock to restart the heart of someone 

suffering from cardiac arrest. 

SUNYIT’s defibrillators are in 

seven locations: 

• Cayan Library, on the wall near 

the main entrance and circula- 

tion desk 

• Donovan Hall, the hallway 

outside the School of Nursing 

& Health Systems office 

• Adirondack Hall, on the wall in 

the vestibule entrance to the 

main office and mailbox area 

• Mohawk Hall, on the wall in

Heading the effort to install 

the units and make sure enough 

people are properly trained to use 

them are University Police Officer 

Joseph Piazza, and Environmental 

Health & Safety Officer Mark 

Fairbrother. 

“Joe had to put together appropriate 

documentation, notify the 

proper off-campus agencies, and 

put together a procedures manual,” 

Fairbrother said. “He’s also been 

instrumental in training volunteers 

in the use of the units.” The first of 

the AED’s was donated to the campus 

by the Mohawk Valley Institute 

for Learning in Retirement; the rest 

of the $2,000 units were purchased 

with campus funds. 

The units can be used by anyone 

who have received CPR and AED 

training; Piazza has already trained 

more than 30 faculty and staff

volunteers and will invite others 

to take part in the four-hour training 

course in the months ahead. 

“For every minute cardiac arrest 

victims go without defibrillation, 

their survival rate decreases by 10 

percent,” Piazza said. “Training in 

the proper operation of the AED’s 

is critical, and we’re fortunate that 

a number of people have already 

come forward and are trained.” 

Fairbrother and Piazza said any 

time you are present when a medical 

emergency occurs on campus, 

you should immediately call University 

Police at ext. 111 or 7105. 

In cases where a defibrillation unit 

is removed from its cabinet in one 

of the campus buildings, a local 

alarm will sound but Police should 

be contacted so medical responders 

can be called as needed.

MVILR Launches 

Eighth Year 

The Mohawk Valley Institute for Learning in Retirement on the 

SUNYIT campus launched a new fall term with an open house in 

September. 

MVILR is the fifth largest of more than 260 Institute for Learning

papers or tests. An offshoot of Elderhostel, MVILR is hosted by SUNYIT,

dining halls, athletic facilities and many campus events.

SUNYIT Announces Plans for 

December 2004 Commencement 

The State University of New York Institute of Technology 

(SUNYIT) will hold Commencement on Saturday, December 18. The 

1 p.m. ceremony will take place in the Campus Center Gymnasium 

and a reception will follow. 

An estimated 400 graduates will join the ranks of SUNYIT’s more 

than 20,000 alumni. Bachelor’s and master’s degrees will be awarded 

from SUNYIT’s four Schools: Arts & Sciences, Information Systems 

& Engineering Technology, Management, and Nursing & Health 

Systems. Graduates who completed the coursework necessary 

for their degrees in August have been invited to participate in the 

December ceremony as well.

Judicial Official from India Visits SUNYIT

daughter in a graduate program. 

Justice P.D. Dinakaran is the father 

of Amudhaporkodi Dinakaran, 

who is pursuing a master of science

Murphy Joins Athletic Staff 

Hall of Famer 

takes associate 

head coach’s spot 

The last time Tom Murphy 

and Kevin Grimmer shared the 

same side of a basketball court the 

results were quite remarkable. 

With Murphy as head coach 

and Grimmer anchoring the post, 

the men’s basketball team at Hamilton 

College produced an 82-21 

record from 1977-81, along with 

two ECAC championships. Highlights 

during that span include 

Murphy being honored as the 

National Coach of the Year in 

1979 and Grimmer being named 

a NCAA Division III All-America 

in 1981. 

The two have reunited 23 years 

later as Murphy joins the SUNYIT 

athletics staff after an amazing 34year 

career in athletics at Hamilton.

Tom Murphy 

has announced that Murphy joins 

the Wildcats this season as an 

associate head coach for men’s 

basketball. 

“Coach Murphy brings an 

enormous amount of experience 

and achievement to SUNYIT 

athletics – not just for the men’s 

basketball team, but for our entire 

program,” says Grimmer. “As the 

Wildcat sports program continues 

to emerge we are truly fortunate 

to have Coach Murphy join us 

to help guide SUNYIT athletics 

down the road to prominence in 

the SUNYAC.” 

Murphy, a member of the 

New York State, Greater Utica 

and SUNY Sports Halls of Fame, 

brings impressive credentials 

across the valley to SUNYIT. His 

basketball coaching achievements 

feature a 128-14 record - including 

a national high school record 

of 104 consecutive victories – at 

Union Academy in Belleville. At 

Hamilton his teams amassed a 602- 

263 record, made 30 postseason 

tournament appearances and had 

16 twenty-win seasons. Murphy 

coached 20 All-Americans and 

two national players of the year at 

Hamilton. 

As Hamilton’s director of athletics 

from 1979-2002, Murphy 

oversaw the development of 12 

additional varsity sports programs

wife, Joanne, in Clinton, N.Y.

Anthony Visconti has joined the Herkimer 

Area Resource Center as director of fi nance. 

He will oversee and manage the human 

service agency’s $14 million annual budget. 

Carlo Cuccaro `89 has received the 

Frank Plumeau School Practitioner 

of the Year award from the New 

York State Association of Psychologists. 

Carlo is currently working 

in the Fulton City School district
