Keeping military in our hearts and minds
By Sharon Johnson
and Bob Marston
The annual Blue Star summer
barbecue for families and
friends of Temple City’s men
and women in the U.S. Armed
Forces took place Friday, June
3, hosted by the First Baptist
Church of Temple City. The
gymnasium and kitchen were
decorated in red, white and blue
with red roses and flowing
candles that added a special
touch for the patriotic dinner.
Blue Star Banner program
leader Sharon Johnson introduced
emcee Bob Marston. The
dinner opened with the presentation
of colors and Pledge of
Allegiance led by George
Preston and Boy Scout Troop
16. Pastor Doug Beyer gave a
moving invocation.
A card from Air Force Captain
Nathan Alfano and a letter
from Army Specialist Carolyn
LeBerthon were read. Both are
serving in Afghanistan. The
Lockie Singers, under the direction
of Roger Lockie, sang
beautifully the National Anthem
and American the Beautiful.
At the grill were Don
Hendrix and Darrell Beaman.
The burgers were a crowd
pleaser as well as the delicious
pasta salads made by Betty
Marston, Rhue Guyant and
Celeste LeBerthon.
Special guests were WWII
vets Louis Paletta, Joe Milazzo
and Nurse Harriet Leppek, who
worked in a hospital in Hawaii.
Also, in attendance were
Temple City Mayor Tom
Chavez and several city council
members.
Special recognition was
given to Tony Hillbruner for
making his special slideshow,
troops will be Nov. 4.
By Sharon Johnson and Bob Marston
The featured speaker at the Blue Star gathering June 2 was Marine
Gunnery Sgt. Brent Marston who gave an account of what life
and work was like serving in the Marines.
While serving in the Marines with
VMM 162, the Golden Eagles and the
second Osprey unit to be sent into Iraq,
Sgt. Marston was stationed at Al Asad.
The mission was to carry troops to
needed areas, sometimes near hot zones,
and to support the ground troops by flying
in supplies. The weather presented a
challenge with sandstorms and temperatures
ranging from 85-139 degrees.
In 2010, Sgt. Marston was on a small
carrier that was headed for the Middle
East. The first stop was Haiti, shortly after
the earthquake, to offer assistance.
Sgt. Brent Marston
After a few weeks he left Haiti for the Gulf of Aden. Life on the
carrier was difficult. He worked 12-15 hours a day, seven days a
week. He trained, maintained and was always ready.
Sgt. Marston also gave information about the V22 Osprey. He
had worked on this plane for 12 years. It has many advantages over
some of the older aircraft. It is a vertical lift plane; it is much faster,
more agile and has a much higher ceiling which keeps them out of
range of ground fire.
Sgt. Marston spoke about how grateful he and the others in his
unit were for the support from home and the Blue Star Program.
The many packages and mail meant a lot to them and lifted their
moral, just to know that folks care.
